Ile Denies the Charge. l ace Mr. Bond, who is charged with having P d the gun in Golding's hands by which young Chambers was killed, denies positively that he did so. He says that when he went to dinner, he gave the gun into the hands of one of the Provost Guard, and thatduriug his absents, theguard being called to dinner, placed the gun in the hands of Golding, with instructions to keep guard, not knowing who he was. In view of this state of affairs, the Mayor, after due examination.of the facts, decided that Bond was not to blame, and inasmuch as no charge had been preferred against him, he was admitted to bail in his,own recognizance upon giving bond in the' sum of $5OO to answer any charge ,that might be preferred against him. Golding was committed to jail for further hearing until next Monday afternoon at three. o'clock. Some of the coal diggers had abused Mr. Bond's family in a shameful manner, and threatened violence,. but last night the ex• eitement had pretty well died away. Hotel for Rent. Fettrini Accident. On Monday night a young man named _ , cuis Drexler, who had been at work on the entrenchment s ou llumelht heights, opposite liarri.burg, met with a fearful accident which has sinc, resulted fatally. It appears that h , was starting home, and coming to the low fence that runs along the edge of the deep cot made through the hill by the Central railroad, sprang over it, alighting close to the edge of the cut, of the proximity of which he does not seem to have been aware, the earth gave way under him, and he was precipi• toted down a rocky and a'rnost perpcndic• ular precipice sixty feet in height, striking on the eoltd rock of the road below. Hi s back, both legs and left arm were broken. He lingered until ten o'clock yesterday morning when death released him from his suerin Boy Drowned. Although diligent search was made for the body, it was not found until yesterday morning, when NVharfinge r Allen fished it out of a very deep hole about twenty feet below where he fell overboard. An inquest was held, and a verdict rendered in accordance with the facts. Arrested as a Spy. Lewis Statenfield, who has been in the rebel service for the past two years, was arrested at his residence in Wilkinsburg, charged with being a spy, and was locked up by the Provost Marshal. Great National Circus. The advance corps of managers of that flue equestrian and gymnastic organization known as the National Circus have wisely concluded to give a series of performances ; in this city, commencing on Tuesday night, 'June 30th, continuing afternoon and night, until the '4th of July exclusive. The direction of programme s is under the control of Mrs. C. Warner, formerly the wife of the celebrated Dan. Rice. In this city she is. quite a favorite, being a daughter of Pittsburgh, and here it was that she was espoused by the gentleman who has created such a furore as a pro fessional showman. The circumstances that resulted in her successful prayer from the matrimonial bonds that bound her to Mr. Rice — ,are too well known to require comment, sufficient as they are to win for her the sympathy of the public, as well as the generous support of those who are in timately cognizant of all the details of the affair. She has a superior company, a large stock of horses, and can, and will, give an entertainment well calculated to attract the very best classes of society. New Novels. The golden age of novelists is not, as many suppose, over, for we are now in the very midst of it. True, we are not burdened with so much waste, not fi t for any one to read, but we have a succession of really excellent fictions, chiefly by female writers, quite sufficient to meet the wants of the novel reading public, who oftenfind much instruction in these eva nescent publications. OFR FORCES AT VICKSBURG, Seige Progressing Favorably TRIM PIRRD INTO BY MRS Bragg to Invade Kentucky New York City Requests the Administration to Reinstate General McClellan. HEADQUARTERS WALNUT HILLS, } VICKSBURG., June 13, 1863. A ride along the enemy's lines devel oped a change in their positions. The-.enemy's batteries were silent on all sides, only a few riflemen firing on our sappers. Our bombardment continues with vigor. We have more guns in position. Deserters coming into our lines to-day report the men and line officers discon tented and only prevented from deserting by the hope that they may be honorably surrendered in a few days. Blair's recon noissance between the Yazoo and Big Black revealed no signs of the enemy within thirty miles and every useful thing destroyed for fifty miles around. Breckenridge, it is said, has beaten Jackson. Our position is equal to one hundred thousand men. LATER, June l4.—Nothing of impor tance has transpired in the last twenty-four hours. The firing on our batterieshas slackened and the enemy rarely replies. The rebels are believed to be erec!ing enterior line works, preparatory to falling back. Abont one hundred of the enemy are reckoned to be killed and wounded daily by our sharyshooters, Oar wounded are well cared for in the field hospitals. The health and morale of the army is good. !- Chaplain Eaton, Superintendent of the contrabands here, is making arrangements to withdraw to a safe place the large num bers of negroes which have collected here, Gen. Osterhans holds Black River Bridge without interruption. The Paymasters commence paying the troops immediately. The prospects of a siege look brighter and brighter, but..nofears are entertained for the result URFREESBORO, June IS—Bragg has undoubtedly received reinforcements of brigades—Bates, Clayton and Church these, with Brown's brigades of Mc- Cormick's division are left behind to form new divisions off' Stuart's and Hardee's corps. Bragg now has eighteen brigades of iufantry and cavalry. There are indications of a co-operation with Buckner from Knoxville. Bragg is about to assume the offensive and invade Kentucky, striki❑g about Mountcello or Carthage, in East Tennessee. Buckner has a large force and is rapid ly organizing for offensive operations. The exempted men, who have been burning saltpetre and nitre in East Ten nessee, have been armed by Buckner, to guard the rear, and aid in gathering the immense crops of wheat. The Union 'lneu, who planted wheat largely, in the hope of Burnside reaping it, have turned their stock into the fields to destroy it. They despair of Union troops reaching their district to avail themselves of the crops. _V A. fA k 3 lA.
