MEDICAL PREPARED BY There is much sound sense in this view of Mr. Greeley. The Provost Marshal General. Col, James-13. Fry, the newly appointed Provost Marshal General, entered the army as a cadet in the year 1813, and four years later graduated as a second lieutenant in the. third artillery. In F r ebraamll2.6.l.- - 12 e -was promoted to a first lieutenancy ; August 8, 1861, became a captain, and in April, 1862, was advanced to a majority, but for some months previous to his last promotion had been acting as aid-de-camp, with the rank of Colonel. The conscription act specifies that the office of the Provost Marshal General, forming a separate bureau of the War De partment, shall be at the seat of govern• ment, and that the officer occupying the exalted position shall have the same rank, pay and emoluments as are enjoy ed by a Colonel of cavalry. His duty shall be with the approval of the Secre tary of War, to make the rules and regu lations for the government - of the differ ent Prevost Marshals throughout the coon - try ; to furnish them with the names and residences of all deserters from the army or any of the land forces in the service of the United States, including the militia, ' when reported to him by - the' command ing officers ; to communicate to them all orders of the President in reference to calling out the national forces; to furnish proper blanks and instructions for enroll ing and drafting; to file and preserve cop ies of all enrollment lists ; to require sta ted reports of all proceedings on the part of his subordinates ; and to audit all ac counts connected with the service under his direction, and to perform all such oth er duties as the President may prescribe in the carrying out of all the provisions of this act. Great Battle at San Salvador-- The Invaders Defeated. At the date of my last advices from here this republic was in a state of great excitement, who 'owing to the threatened invasion of Carrera, with a large body of Salvadorean troops, accompanied by two parks of artillery, had been concentrating on the frontier to impede the invaders. Sc, - soon as it becamn known that Carrera had left Guatemala to place himself in com mand, and that his troops in two divisions were moving to the frontier, General Bar rios, with hie stalT, - quitted is capital and took supreme command of the army.— He found them in an admirable position at Quotepeque, sixteen leagues from San tanna ; here, it would appear, he deter mined toawait the enemy. On the 18th 'Carrera (tossed the. frontier; all attempte at mediation bad failed • ' war became in , 'table •-an armed force had invaded a ericidcaleiriteiry ; the issue was tlivaited.! with.breathless.anxiety. ,Martial law was formally Orochumed.bn the 20th • a com plete stagnation in - business iollowed ; every store was closed ; a general moving of all property and valuables at every out let of .the town took place; strong barri o, ethwere thrown up, and all denoted a state of seige. Meanwhile Carrera con tinued his onward 'march, entered. Sant anna, which he found deserted, unmolest ed, and, there matured his plans of attack. These he'ettempted to carry out on Mon day, the 22d; he made a bold attempt to entry' the entrenchments, left over *ihip. hundred victims therein, and was fairly repulsed. Yesteitay, 24th, at Ba. in., he renewed the onslaught. DAILY POS The New York Tribune on the Last Dollar and Last Ma Doc trine. The New York Tribune of the 17th thus . administers a rebuke to the crazy parti sans who talk about carrying on the war for an indefinite number of years. The Tri bune says: "We haveno altercation with those.pro fessed Unionists who dilate on the ability of the loyal States to maintain a ten, fif teen or twenty years' war. We do not doubt the possibility of such a war, but we do not regard it as within the scope of ra tional probability. We hold every year's duration of the rebellion as diminishing dad chances that it will ever be put down. Better make this year after all the effort whereof we are capable, with a fixed determination that there shall be no rebellion to fight next year. • i "It we can eat te rebels, et s sh t. If we can' b I beat h them, let l us u own ow it. And let us provide for and prosecute the campaign of 1863 as if there were to be no ether. When it shall have been con eluded, we trust there will be no ground of controversy as to what shall be done thereafter." From Central America The Adams' Express Robbery. The Baltimore Sun gives the following account of the robbery of the safe ?f the Adams' Express Co., containing about $lOO,OOO, in money and securities, from a night train on the NOrthern Central Railroad . : The train left this city for the North and West at nine . o'clock •on Monday night, and the baggage car being more comfort able than the car belonging to the Ex. press Company, the safe containing the valuables was placed in that. The bag gage car contains two apartments the front being occupied by the mail and the rear for the baggage. The baggage-mas ter being, with the messenger of the Ex press Company, named Weitzell, were both in the car ' and everything was right when they reached Cockeysville. After leaving the lait named place both of the parties mentioned walked into the mail-room, where they remained for a short time, and, on nearing Parkton, a distance of only nine miles from Cockeys ville' Mr. Weitzel] returned to the bag gage department and discovered that the safe was gone. He knew it contained a considerable sum of money but did not telegraph to the agent in this city, nor did he stop until he reached Harrisburg. At what portion or point the safe was thrown from the car could not be aster_ tamed, and it could only have• been done by some person concealed in the car when the train started, or by some person - - who entered the baggage oar from the; passenger cat. behind. The safe contained about fifty thousand ; dollars in cash, a small portion of which ; was in gold. There was a large amont of certificates of indebtedness, but th u ey are of no use to the thieves, as payment was at once stopped. There were also' some government bonds, Mit they, ton, are valueless. The principal part of the money had been sent from Washington, and was in transitu for the families of sol diers who are now with the army. The; company has determined to make a rigid investigation of the matter, and to trace. if possible, the perpetrators of the daring.; robbery. Several persons left the city yesterday for the purgose of searching fo r ; the stolen property, but up to a late hour' last night no clue had been obtained to it. The company at once, on the receipt of the intelligence, made arrangements to re fund to the proper owners all the money lost. The express messenger has been in the employ of the company only three or four weeks, bat he was recently a conduc• tor on the Pennsylvania Central railway.. The safe which contained the money and papers weighed some four or five hundred pounds, and it is supposed that more than one person was engaged in throwing it from the-car.
