Desolation is North Carolina. —A correspondent from Beaufort writes that desolation marks the entire face of the country in that part of our State. The resources of the State have been drained completely to support the rebel armies, and what the people are to do for bread is now the inquiry. About one third of the cultivated lands are now under tillage; no cotton or tobacco is planted; the fisheries are neglected; turpentine plantations are lying idle; the woolly-heads have run away, and the whole country seems to be going to destruction. A Boy Shoots his Companion.— A boy named Stewart was accidentally shot by one named Southcoast,in La Salle county, lajt week. The boys were amusing them selves by “snapping caps," with a gun supposed to bo uncharged, when it dis charged a load of buckshot into the body of young Stewart, killing him instantly. Boys, take notice. A shrewd old REBEL in New Orleans thus excused himself for taking the oath oi allegiance: “The oath of allegiance is like a contract of marriage—it is binding only while both parlies live. Now, the Confederate, so far as this city is concern ed, is stoue dead, and, therefore, our con tract with it is at au end.” A maiden lady named Eunice Andrews, aged forty one years, living in Chester, Conn., committed suicide a few days ago. She filled her apron with stones, walked into the shoal water of the rivor to the river to the depth of about three feet, sat down and threw herself over backwards, under the water, and was drowned.
