WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAY d 4 CITY MID illißolllooD INTELLIGED The Late Counterfeiting Case. • The evening papers of yesterday publish a statement from Mrs. Newton, of Sixth street, arrested last week charged, in con nection with James Clarke. with passing counterfeit cion. It would appear, from her story, that "Dr." Webb, the notorious dealer in counterfeit coin, had induced Clarke to take some coin, which he was disposing of to a third party acting in con cert with Webb, when the police pounced upon the house and arrested Clarke and Mrs. Newton, the third party escaping.— Mrs. Newton alleges that the whole :flair was arranged to entrap Clarke. The cre dence to be given to her utory, must how ever, be decided upon by the public from the character of all the parties. Latest from Western Virginia. By the following: from the Parkersbnr; Gazette s it will be seen that Arnoldsburg and Spencer, recently captured by the rebels, have been retaken by our_forees : On Wednesday last, a gang numbering about three hundred made a descent upon the town of Arnoldsburg, the county seat of Calhoun county, and succeeded in en r - prising and capturing the Federal forces there, consisting of one company of Col. Pittsburgh has long been justly celebrated for the substantial (-liar:teler of the vehicles made in her shops, and the carriages, buggies. sulkies, rockaways. sleighs, &c., made by this obl established firm have a reputation equal to any. They use none but the best material, and employ only the most competent workmen, and no inferior work is permitted to leave the shop. They have now ott.. hand a large stock of thoroughly seasoned material, and any one wishing a durable, well finish ed vehicle, at a moderate price, will find it to their advantage to call at their mann litctory, No. 187 Penn street, opposite the St. Clair Hotel. They now have a lot of second-hand buggies, 'vouches and car riages, which will be sold low. Jobbing and repairing will be done to order on .short notice and on reasonable terms. Refreshment Cars. A novel feature has been introduced on the Philadelphia and Baltimore Railroad, in the shape of refreshment cars, which have proved_a great convenience to pas sengers. Five will be permitted on the road, which have been leased by a Phila delphia firm at 52,500 each per annum. They will be attached to through trains only. Each car is divided into two parts, itIVIC half devoted to the use of passengers, tilhe other to the restaurant, which will be supplied with all articles of food usually offered in eating saloons. This improve ment will be appreciated by the traveling public, who will much prefer procuring refreshments on the train to paying high prices at the stations and running the risk of being left behind. The Washington Star of Saturday has the following statement: Capt. J. A. Parrish, of the 79th New York regiment, and Lieut. .1. W. Demp sey, of the Second New York, arrived in this city yesterday from Richmond. They were captured at the battle of Bull Run, (where both were wounded) and carried to Richmond; and, after a time, successively to Castle Pinckney, Columbia, S. C., and other Confederate prisons, and sonic time ago returned to Richmond and confined, with about five hundred other prisoners, in a building occupied formerly by a man named Libby, as a pork-packing establish ment. They left Richmond last Thursday morning in charge of Lieut. Lewis, of Gen. Winder's staff, and after being blind folded, conveyed by railroad to a station which their guard said was the Summit.— They were here lifted out of the cars and into an ambulance. From the tramping and shuffling which they heard, and other noise, they were inclined to think_ that there was a large crowd gathered in and around the station; but not being allowed to ask any questions, they can only guess at this. They were carried a ride of about two or three hours in the ambulance, when they came to a sudden halt by the tun balance breaking down. Lieut. Barnwell, (of a South Carolina regiment,) who had taken them in charge at the summit, offered them his arm, and marched them half a mile through a wood, where he removed the bandages, and told them he did not think they could reach the Federal lines that night, and that there would he a fight upon the very ground they were standing upon. At this moment a courier came up with a dispatch to Lieut. Barnwell, who, again blindfolding his prisoners, returned to where the and:pal:l tit* broke down, and, impressing a cart into the service, put the prisoners therein, with their backs to the horses, and started ow towards the Federal lines, arriving at General McDowell's headquarters that night. They passed on the way some soldiers, and they thought. also some artil lery. They report. that on last Saturday night a large meeting was held in Richmond to decide what should be done with the city on the arrival of the Kederals. The prop erty holders and most substantial men of the city favored a surrender, while those who had no interest. there were ram mint for burning it.. Capt. Parrish thinks there is a very strong Union feeling in Rich mond. Every corner is nightly pasted thick with Union sentiments and myste rious writings, which alarm the seeeskionists very much. lin 'last Saturday and all day Sunday, there was much excitement in the city, and troops were being rapidly sent oil; while all the artillery that had been sent south of Richmond some time previous was hurriedly brought btiek and shipped north. Prom all that our informants could learn the Confederates evidently intended at tacking General McDowell that night, (Thursday) and a large force was hurried off froM Richmond for that purpose. The Confederates at Richmond have every vehicle and cart engaged, busily hauling stones and filling them in the canal and all other boats, for the purpose of sinking them in the James river, on the approach of the Federal fleet. A man named William Churchill desert ed from the Ist Ohio cavalry, and joined the Confederate service. He was placed as one of the guards over the prisoners, and was one of the most merciless and brutal of all the sentinels—taking every opportunity to offer them insult, and even tired upon theta for simply looking out of the window. Capt. Parrish intends re porting the case to the War °nice. . . . They also report that there is a man named Emack. a lieutenant in the rebel service, who formerly lived in Washington. This man has frequently boasted that be passed through the Federal lines at the time of the Bull Run fight, and, taking a musket, minified himself picking oft Fed eral Soldiers. Both Lieut. Dempsy and Captain Farrish have heard him assert that he has frequent communication with his father, who lives in Washington, and that he knows all that is going on within the Federal lines. and Inkstand Lieut. Dempsey says that a Lieut. Dan iels, of the Confederate service, was allowed to go to Richmond, many months ago, for' the purpose of effecting his (Dempsey's) exchange. Daniels, however, after he got there, paid no attention to the matter, but entered again into the Confederate service, and was acting therein while Lieutenant Dempsey, whom .he should, according to his parole, have•had released, was lying in prison. Respectfully yours, lIEAD./ . ltS 421) PENNSYLVANIA VOLS., 1 . May 5, 1862. j 110 N. .1. K. MootingAn—My Dear Sir: Your favor of the first found me yesterday after Yorktown was ours. I have not time to give you any general views of the great. result.. It was on the part of the enemy a disgraceful runaway, although so perfect were our lines and works, the rebels would have been driven out within twenty-four hours after all our batteries had 'opened. The moral effect against them must be over whelming. Taking all things now together, I feel sure that the pernicious light of organized rebellion flickers in the socket. In less than forty days seeesh, as a system, will be no more. The "Moorhead Rifles" have done your name no dishonor. They were the first Regiment in the enemy's works—their Colonel the first man on the heights, and raised the first flag on the fortifications of Yorktown. The Regi ment has done its fall share of duty, and been exposed to a full share of danger. It is of God's mercy that so many of us are here to-day. You may state this inter esting fact in the history of the 62d before Yorktown : On the first day and in the first time of the army, the first men (of all the infantry) who were wounded, and the first man killed belonged to the "Moor head Rifles," and yesterday, again, in the trout before Yorktown, and immediately preceding our occupation of it, the last shot from the rebel guns was fired at the 62d—a shell which burst not ten yards over the heads of two companies. I have no time for a long letter. Several divis ions were rapidly pushed after the flying rebels, and as !write " the noise of battle" is distinctly heard to the front. You will, of course, have results by telegraph. All accounts from deserters, prisoners and contrabands, put the flying. army of the Peninsula at over 100,000. In great haste, but always truly, 8. W.
