Soiling Cattle Horses dales. Col. A. K. M'Cixrb, of the Chara- Lcrsburg '"Repository, seems to be good at almost anything he takes hold of, and is now one of the heavy farmers of Cumberland Valley. In a late number of his paper, under the head of "War's Lessons to Farmers," he objects to restoring the fences ta ken away by both armies recently, and gives the following good reasons therefor. Pasturing enr heavy clay land., is the work of death. If wet and soft, wherever a hoof treads the surface, it hakes, and the air, one of the best of fertilizers, ceases to permeate it. It dry, the tread of stock is almost equal ly fatal, for it has little or no elastic ity ; and for all this damage, there is no adequate compensation. We have, for two years, fed all our cattle with excellent grass, from the 10th of Juno to the 1st of 8cptcmbcr, cut from the lawn about our dwelling house in all not over two and a half j acres, and a considerable portion of that is so thickly set with heavy tnnt trees as to retard the growth of the grass very much. We mow it three times, for feed just often enough to keep the lawn neat and clean and cut it again, late in the fall, to prepare the ground for a light coat of manure from the horses tables, which lies on the surface during the winter and is raked oil in the spring. By the first of September, we have corn-stalks rea dy for the cattle. Wc plough deeply and manure well, about two acres, in April, and sow broadcast about 3J bushels of corn to the acre about the first of Mav. It comes up thickly on the p-round. crows tall and slender in lliOKtnlk anr) is tlio verv best f.-pd fur ' me hiaih.anu is tut, cry ulm ilcu lor cattle in the latter part of Angust and I September, when all other pasture is generally dried tip, that could be supplied ihera. In this way all our cattle hare the very best, succulent food, from Jane until lute in autumn. No fences are required, no land is damaged, no grass wasted, and the cattle thrivo better than in the pas ture fields exposed to the heat of FDiumer and tormented by flies. They are stabled in the morning, before the heat of the day, the stable kept dark to exclude flies, although well ventilated, and in the evening, they are turned out and fed in the yard and have free range to running water. Thus two, acres of farm land, besides the lawn about my house, supply all the pasture for our cattle live months of the year, while most of onr neigh- liors would destroy fifteen acres of grass, tot to count fences and damage to land, in keeping the tame number, and then would have good pasture but a short time. We never pasture horses. They do immenso damage to land, and of ten are more injured than benefitted by grazing. Young clover is exhaus ting to them, and it is seldom that they can be turned out without getting it; and old clover has little more nourishment than straw. They arc better ia the stable, with good grass cut for them when it is fit for use ; end when it is not when young clo wcr is mixed wiili it tLcy arc better than hay. Wc have thus digressed to enforce our conviction that inside fences arc needle?, profitless and positively vastcful of land, of labor and of mon ey ; ar.d we entreat such of our farm era as have lost fences, to learn the lesson of war, and take out all re maining inside fences and make out 6ide fences in the best style. Xo far mer has yet, fo far as wc have been advised, tried foiling stock, and re turned to the old plan : and wc feel well assured that no farmer will ever ' g return to division fences after he has ! fairly tried gtttiiig along without . ? them. Another lesson clearly taught bv the 3ad events of the last year, is the ' necessity ol employing mules more generally in our farming operations. They are capable of doing as much ordinary farm work as the horse, arc ten-fold more enduring, arc never t?ick and rarely crippled by sprains or ether accidents, they live twice as long as the horse, and can be kept ob one half the feed from year to year. "Free at Last" A naval offietr tells tbt following touch, lag incideat: "While on the blockade ctviaci a few tnnotht ago, in Warsaw Sound, Ga., frail, leaking boat, manned by two saaleoootrabaDds, aud containing, besides, women and cbi1dreD,alowly drifted down to our vessel. We sent boat to therr aid, and brought them on board. The two men were brothers, and bad both beea (hot by the enemy's picket ; one was wounded painfully, aud, alas ! the other fatally; and as he was rapidly passing tray, I felt it my duty to tell bim. He was kneeling at the time, toptorted by bis woaaded brother, but be drew himself proudly op, and bia eyes kindled with a celestial light as ba said : 'It ia de Lor' a will : breaa da Lr ! breat da Lor, maasa : dh chile am free at la$t.'
