Pierpont Morgan and Wil liam Rockefeller By Associated Press Washington, D. C„ May 19.—Charles S. Mellen to-day resumed the remark able story he is unfolding before tho Interstate Commerce Commission con cerning the vast and complicated finan cial operations of the New Haven Rail road and its various subsidiers. Chief Counsel Folk, of the commis sion, directed his inquiries to-day chiefly to developing the dominant part taken in the transactions by prominent figures on tbe bo-rd of directors of the New Haven Railroad, and more particularly the late J. Pierpont Mor gan and William Rockefeller. I Mr. Mellen told of his relations with Mr. Morgan, including some differences which he said had occurred. Mr. Mel len nlso went fully into the acquisition of the New York, West Chester and Boston road by the New Haven. This brought out further references to the r>nrt taken by the late Police Inspector Thomas F. Byrnes, of New York, who, Mr. Mellen testified, operated through "the people In Fourteenth street, where, you know, Tammany Hall Is located." Mr. Mellen, when questioned about differences with Mr. Morgan regarding the West Chester deal, detailed a con versation with the late financier which he said had greatly "humiliated" him. "Were you afraid of Mr. Morgan?" Mr. Polk asked. "You might call it cowardice." Mr. Mellen answered. "I held Mr. Morgan in more awe than any other man I ever knew." M'CAHAN Fountain, 1120, Member General Committee. them to the convention city. By 1.80 this afternoon it is believed that all delegates will be here and to-mor row's session will probably begin with all in place. Alter an address of welcome on be half of the city by Mayor John K. Royal and on behalf of the Harrisburg lodges by R. D. Beman, which was responded to by Grand Master Fred C. Hanyen, of Scranton, the conven tion got down to business. Tho report of the grand master indicated that everything was harmoniously working. He congratulated the order on its splendid showing and its rapid growth during the past few months toward attaining the 200,000 mark sot for 1010. Kilt, ooo Members in State The report of the grand secretary. Usher A. Hall, Philadelphia, showed that there are now a approximately 180,000 members in tho state. .Last. September there was 157,751. M. Richards Muckle, the grand treasurer, who is 90 years old, and who at th© linal session will be installed to that office for the fifty-ninth consecutive term, presented a report showing a healthy condition of the finances of the order. Of course, the unexpected may de velop at any time, but so far as pre figuring goes there doesn't appear to be much under the surface to ruffi© the serenity of this convention. There is a proposal on foot to create a third home for aged and infirm members of the order in addition to continuing tho maintenance of the homes now op erated in Philadelphia and in Grove City, and if finances warrant it such a proposition will probably pass. Installation of OHirers Sessions will continue to-morrow and Thursday and will conclude with j the installation of officers selected last fall by tho past grands' associations all over the state. The following will be installed: Grand master, Paul A. Benson, Erie; deputy grand master, J. P. Hale Jenkins, Norristown; grand warden, Perry A. Shaner, Pittsburgh; representative to the sovereign grand lodge, Wilson K. Mohr, Allentown. Usher A. Hall and the grand old man of the state order, M. Richards Muckle, will be again installed as secretary and treasurer. The session adjourned at 12.30 this afternoon to meet again to-morrow morning at !) o'clock. The Odd Fellows are everywhere in evidence in tho city parks and suburbs snd the downtown section is gay with flags hung out to welcome tho visiting members of the three-link order. Headquarters of the state officers at the Commonwealth are crowded and a similar condition prevails at the other hotels in the city. Auxiliary Lodge Sessions. In the meantime the Daughters of Rebckah, the auxiliary order of the Odd Fellows, proceeded from head quarters in the Bolton house to the Board of Trade rooms and began their twenty-fifth annual session. The of ficers arrived yesterday and most of 'the delegates were on hand when busW ness began this morning. Daughters of Rebekah to Propose Changes in Their Constitution Odd Fellows, who, to-morrow morn ing are expected to wrestle over the problem of providing a constitution for tho D'aughters of Rebekah, the aux iliary order composed of wives or daughters or sisters of members, little reck that a strong undercurrent is brewing among the Rebekahs in re spect to this same constitution which, it is said, will propose some radical changes not altogether to the liking of the "Sister of Odd Fellowship." Un doubtedly any student of humming na ture or history will tell you that the ladles will have their way anyway, but according to officers of the Rebekahs they are going to object to some of the changes of the constitution, if they dare. Of course if the State Convention | hands down tho constitution as If it were a mandate, a saying, "this is the j law," not much can be done in public. Things will have to go along until home is reached, according as directed. But if the Grand Lodge allows some dis cretionary powers of ratification there may be an extremely interesting sess sion, with some breakers ahead. At present the Rebekahs are allowed to make tho "little laws" governing their body. It Is said that they want more power. The Rebekah assembly nponori twenty-fifth session in the Board of Trade building at 9 o'clock (In. ing when Miss Bertha Cunkle, of Sus quehanna Lodge, made an address of welcome, which was responded to by tho president, Mrs. Minnie C. Snyder, of Erie. Nineteen new lodges were Instituted in the State during the past year, according to her report. The ses sion adjourned at noon to meet again this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Defense Open Its Side in Becker Trial New York, May 19. The defense launched Its case to-day at the triaJ of Charles Becker, former police lieu tenant. for the murder of the gambler, Herman Rosenthal, and called as Its first witness Jacob Reich, alias Jack Sullivan, "king of the newsboys." Whether Becker will take the stand was still undecided to-day. Rosenthal died In a gamblers' war, nt the hands of the four gunman put to death for the crime, according to the contention of Martin T. Manton, chief counsel for the defense, in his opening address. It was doubtless true, he said, that Jack Rose induced the gunmen to slay Rosenthal, but Ro»e was acting for himself, not for Beckw. 11
