A Com plicated Accident. —The United States steam frigate , after a long cruise, re turned, by order, to the Brooklyn navy-yard, when all on board were immediately “paid off.” One of the firemen, Dennis McFinnigan, upon the receipt of his wages went on a “ spree," and after making away with a good part of his money, squared his canvas to the abode of his wife. Placing $2OO, “all in goold, ”in her lap, he informed her that that was all he had. “An, phatdid you do with the rest?” in quired she. “The rest what?” returned Dennis, with well feigned astonishment at her inquiry. “IVhy, the other $2OO. "And how much are you worth ?” inquired Mr. Astor, “About $5,000,000,” replied Mr. Whitney. Binghampton, Sept. 8. 1959. REVOLUTIONS 'VTT'HETHER in Government or fashions never go \Y backwards. ‘‘Old Fogy ism” may frown down every exhibition of youthful fancy, yet every issue from the Press of Fashion shows that some new ad vance has been made in this branch of Science and the Arts. Recognizing this principle of progress in his depart ment of Trade, J. NYE EOBINSON has not sought to keep up with, but to go a little in advance of the ideas and wants of the community in which he lives both ns .regards the style and location of his business or the whereabouts and how he does it. Believing that honesty of purpose and a strict will under ordinary circumstances insure success he undertook to manufacture for this community a por tion of their CLOTHI NG. and it affords him much pleasure to knuw that be has so far succeeded as to have received a good SHAR£ OF THE TRADE. A continuance of which—while be gratefully acknowl edges past favors—he earnestly and respectfully so licits. In every kind of business there are some things that are called Leading Articles, and so we find in this that J BLACK CLOTHS CASSIMERES are what almost everybody wants and without which no establishment can dress up its customers in truly Elegant Style. Of the«e he has a great abundance and as deeply dyed as any Democrat or DJack Repub lican you can find in the land; while in his assortment is no less varied than the politics of the numerous parties, ranging all the way from genuine administration down to rankest opposition. In bis selection of goods for Over Coatings he is remarkably fortunate both as to STYLE AND DURABILITY. lie has not only a large Stock of Goods, but his fa cilities for manufacturing them were never better, having secured in Mr. Ten Eyck a most EXCELLENT CUTTER. And in every other department the most competent help. Confident that be can offer advantages to his customers not excelled by any in the trade, and deter mined to make bis establishment one of the best in this section of country, he invites the attention of the people of Tioga County who are in any way in need of a good, comfortable, stylish and durable gar ment. To the President of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Society:— The subscribers, your committee to examine - the contents of a Salamander Safe of Evans A Watson, after being exposed to a strong fire on tho Pair Ground* for eight hours, respectfully represent— That after seven cords of oak wood and three of pine bad been consumed around the Safe, itwas open ed in the presence of the committee, and tho contents taken out, a little warmed, but not even scorched. Several Silver Medals heretofore received by the manufacturers, and a largo quantity of documents were in the Safe, and came gut encirely uninjured. The experiment satisfied us of-the capacity of Safes of this kind to protect contents from any fire to which they may be exposed. J The'-Committee award a Diploma and Jpdver Medal. Geo. W. Woodward, John W. Gbary, J. P. Rutherford, Alfred S. Gillett. Still another. Wilmington. Del., Sept, 17, 1859.—Messrs. Evans and Watson, Philadelphia. Gentlemen: The Salamander Fire-Proof Safe of vour manufacture, purchased, by us from your Agent, Ferris & Garrett, of our city, some nine months ago, was severely tried by burglars last Saturday night, and although they bad a sledge hammer, cold chisels, drill, and gunpowder, they did not succeed in opening the Safe. The lock being one of Hall s Patent Pow der-proof,” they could not get the powder into it, but drilled a hole in the lower-panel and forced in a large charge, which was ignited, and although the door, in side and out, showed the explosion not to have been a small one, it was not forced open. We suppose they were the greater part of the night at work on it. We are much gratified at the result of the attempt to enter it, and if the above facts are of any service, you are at liberty to use them. Your?, truly, BAYNARD & JONES. GREAT FIRE !—ANOTHER TRIUMPH. Knoxville, Tenessee, March 13th, 1859. —Messrs. Evans <fc "Watson, Philadelphia: Gentlemen It affords me great pleasure to say to you that the Salamander Safe, which I purchased of you in February, 1858, proved to be what you recom mended it—a sure protection from fire. My store house together with several others, was burned to the ground in March last. The Safe fell through into the cellar, and was exposed to intense heat for six or eight hours, and when it was taken from the ruins and opened, all its contents wore found to be in a perfect state, the books and papers not being injured in the least. I can cheerfully recommend your Safes to the community, believing as I do, that they arc as near fire-proof as it is possible for any Safe td be made. THOMAS J* 'POWELL.
