Flowers and Music. —Yes, two gifts God has bestowed upon us that have in themselves no guilty trait, and show an essential divineness.. Music is one of these, which seems as if it were not born of the earth, but lingers with ns from the gates of heaven; music, which breathes over the gross, or sad, or doubting heart, to in spire it with a consciousness of its own myste rious affinities, and to touch the chords of its unsuspected, undeveloped life. And the other gift is that of flowers, which, that though born of earth, we may well believe, if anything of earthly soil grows in the higher realm—if any of its methods are continued, if any of its forms are identical, they will live on the banks of the river of life. Flowers! that in our glad ness and in our sorrow are never incongruous— always appropriate. Appropriate in the church, as expressive of its purest and most social themes, and blending their sweetness with the incense of prayer. Appropriate in the joy of the marriage hoar, in the loneliness of the sick room, and crowning with prophecy the fore heads of the dead. They give completeness to the associations of childhood, and are appropri ate even by the side of old age, strangely as their freshness contrasts with wrinkles and gray hairs ; for still they are suggestive, they are symbolical of the soul’s perpetual youth, the inward blossom of immortality, the ama ranth crown. In their presence we feel that the body shall go forth as a winged seed. Items for Housekeepers. —Save all your pieces of bread for pudding; dry, or they will mould. ■ Examine your pickles, sweetmeats and every thing put away. - Buy <mall quantities of cheese at a time.— Get some farmer to put down your butter in the Fall. A hot shovel held over varnished furniture will take out white spots. A bit of glue dissolved in skim milk and water will'restore old crape. Hibhons of any kind should be washed in cold soap suds, and not rinsed. If your flat irons'are rough, rub them well with fine salt and it will make them smooth. Oat straw is best for filling beds; should be changed once a year. , “If yon are buying carpet for durability choose small figures. Scotch snuff put on the holes were crickets come out will destroy them. Wood ashes and common salt, wet with water will stop the crocks of a stove, and prevent the smoke from escaping. Green should be the prevailing color of bed hangings and window drapery. A gallon of strong lye put in a barrel of hard water will make it as soft as rain water. Tue Colored Sentry.— Theodore Parker in his lecture on Washington, last week, repeated the following anecdote, related to him by an old soldier, who vouched for its truth ; At Cambridge, Gen. Washington had heard that the colored soldiers were not to be depend ed upon as sentinels. So one night when the pass word \vas “Cambridge,” he went outside the camp, put on an overcoat, and then ap proached a colored sentinel. “Who goes there?” cried the sentinel. . “A friend,” replied Washington. “Friend, advance unarmed and give the coun tersign,” said the colored man. Washington came up and said “Uoxbury.” “No, Sar 1” was the response. , “Medford,” said Washington. “No, sar!” returned the colored man. “Charleston," said Washington The colored man immediately exclaimed— “l tell you, massa Washington, no man go by here 'out he say Cambridge.” Washington said “Cambridge,” and went by, and the next day the colored gentleman was re lieved of all further necessity for attending to that particular branch of military duty. It .is a joy to know, that there is a realm where all those aspirations which have beto kened us, only to crown us still with thorns, shall be realized, and where there is no bud whioh shall fall without being filled into fruit. “Mynheer, do you know what for we call our boy Hans ?” “Do not really.” “Veil, I will tell you. Do reason we call our boy Hans, it ish his name.” A liiTTL? Girl showing her little cousin (a boy about four years of age) a star, said: —, “That star you see up there is bigger than this world.” Says he “no it nint." “Yes it is,”— -Then why don’t it keep the rain off?” said he. Mrs. Swisshelm says it is marvelously strange how a woman can think herself contaminated by the slightest intercourse with the victim of a seducer, but cover her face all over with smiles to receive the seducer himself. “Sally,” said a young man to a damsel, who had rod hair, “keep away from me, or you will set me afire.” “No dinger of that,” was the answer, “you arc too green to burn." “A dreadful little for a shilling," said a pen urious fellow to a physician, who dealt him oat an emetic. “Can't you give mote ?” BUSINESS DIRECTORY.
