“Got Him -Foot.” —Aunt Jenny was a very exemplary colored woman, arid always felt and showed much concern for the future welfare of her numerous children. But little Nicholas hid so much of the “Old Nick” iu him, that, with all her persuasions and threats, she could not bring him into the good way of saying his prayers. One afternoon Aunt Jenny was startled bv hearing loud cries from the barn yard—“O Lord!" and, hastening out, she saw young'Nick pinned to ihe fence wjih the horns of a cow, one on each side of him, and now and then she would let him out, but only to “bunt” him hack again. Nick kept up 'his cries—“O Lord!” and all the louder when he siw his mother coming. But she didn’t interfere. She stopped, look a good look, set her arms akimbo, and sang out, “Oh, yes! you’s mighty , «illin’ to call on de Lord now you’s got in’o trubul; hut you couldn’t pray wtd yer mudder like a ’spectahle chile I” And turning to the.kilchen she left Nick to the tender mercies of the cow, being quite su:e, however, that no harm would come to him. “GrevT Original Store.” —A dark frown oveispread the handsome and courtly features of Fernando, the Rover. “WhyS, l «hv,” he asked brandishing his silver lnn r l died sword furiously around, “wilt not be lieve me, mv beauteous Maria de Argyle I By this good sword I do swear I love thee— truly, wildly, passionately love thee! The fact is indis putable. The philosophy of it is beyond our hen. Blackwood says, that “the fact of mat rioionv or bachelorship is written so legibly in a man’s appearance, that no ingenuity can conceal it. Everywhere there is some inex plicable ins'incl that tells us whether an indi vidual who-e name, fortune and circumstan ces are totally unknown, be nr be not, n mar lied man. Whether it is a certain subdued look, such as that which characterizes the lions in a menagerie, and distinguishes them from the birds of tho desert, we cannot tell; but the truth is so, we positively affirm.” An Extbnsion. —A punctual and wealthy landlord, remarkable for his urbanity of man ners and willingness to oblige every one who ts up to the mark when pay day comes, has n large number of tenants, and never varies five minutes from a certain hour on each quarter dav, to call on persons and receive his due. One time a very good tenant asked a little delay, as the limes had been bad, anil he had a note to meet at the bank, and plead in addition that he had always been up to lime before, and only wished a tittle extension now. “Oh. certainly,” said the gracious landlord inking out hu watch; “It is now twelve o'clock ; Til cull around at two'."
