CnA*t,E3 Lamb's Wahhisg. —Lamb, a gpniua and a drunkard, tella his sad experi ence as a warning to young men, in the fol lowing language: j ‘•The waters have gone over me. But ou' of the black depths, could I be heard, I would cry out to all those who have but set a foot on the perilous flood. Could the youth to whom the flavor of bis first wine is delicious as the opening scenes of life, or the entering up in some newly discovered paradise, look into my desolation and be made to understund 'what a dreary thing it is when a man shall feel himself going down a precipice with open eyes and a passive will—to see his destruc tion and have no power to-stop it, and yet teeling it ail the way emanating from himself; to see all the godliness emptied out of him. and yet not able to forget a lime when it was otherwise ; to bear about the piteous specta cle of his own ruin ; could he see my fever ish eye feverisbed with last night’s drinking, and feverishly looking for to-night’s repetition o r the folly: could he but feel the body of death out of which I cty hourly, with feebler outcry to be delivered—it were enough to make him dash the sparkling beverage to the earth in all the pride of its mantling tempta tion.” A Good Joke. —A Prussian journal of the Lower Rhine tells a very good joke of a religious community thereon, who, apprecia ting the long and able services of iheir faithful minister, unanimously resolved, as a alight testimonial of the same, to present him this year of a bountiful vintage, each with a bouleof white wine. The minister, of course, duly sensitive to,this delicate tribute of love and affection, as well as pretty proud of it, ns an evidence that his ministry had not been altogether in vain, at considerable expense prepared, in his cellar, a huge ornamented cask, into which on the appointed day appeared every member of his flock and emptied his bottle, Bui what was the sur prise of the minister, as well as of the gen erous donors, on tasting from the now over fl living cask, to find that it was not wine blit water! A strange thing, certainly, and of which we have no other explanation than this, that every member of the society were of the »am« idea, that one boltlfe of water would not be noticed in a whole cask of wine. As Alabama Constable after et al. An Alabama correspondent of the Mobile Advertiser justly proud of his native stale, writes to that paper as follows: A certain fat constable in the county of C., state of Alabama, once received a writ from a Justice of the Peace, known as J. M. 'Tl|e case was R vs. D et al. The goqld constable, who was more famed for his honesty than literary attainments, was sorely puzzled at et al. So after, keeping the writ for a week, he entered the Justice’s office with much anxiety depicted on countenance, and saluted Squire Josh with this exclama tion; “Josh, who’s et al? I’ve been looking for him all over lhe country tor a week, and I can’t find him.] I don’t believe there is any such man in C. I remember meeting^vTnchell— the great Winchell—in a bar room one day, when the following chat look place between him and a son of Erin. W. had jostled him, and Pau deen remarked : “You are no gentleman !” “I know that,” said Winchell, “but I don’t see how such a Tool as you came to know it ?” “But,” says Paddy, “every one says so.” “Of course you heard some one say so, or you would not have known it,” Paddy sloped. An.editor and his wife were walking out -in (he bright moonlight one evening. Like alt ediiors* wives, she was of exceedingly poetical nature, and said to her mate : “No tice that moon—how bright and calm and beauitfah” “Couldn’t think of noticing it,” he replied, “for anyihing less than the usual rates—a dollar and fifty cents for twelve lines,” The old Dutchman who undertook to wal lop bis son, was slightly surprised by Jake turning upon him and walloping him. The old man consoled himself for his defeat by rejoicing at Jake’s superior manhood, thus: *‘Vell, Shake ish a smart fellow; he can vip his own. caddy.” A barrister, blind of one eye, pleading with his spectacles op, said : “Gentlemen, in my argument, I shall use nothing but what is necessary. ,f “Then,” replied the wag, “take out one of the glasses of spectacles.” A person passing by a conceited fellow, and happened to strike his foot with a cane ; “You had better knock my brains out, and finish me, * said the dandy, “I was trying to do it,” was the quiet rejoinder. Different sounds travel with different veloc ity. A call for dinner will iravel over a ten acre lot in a minute, while a summons to work will take ten minutes. The HSafes were then cooled off with water, after which they were opened and the books and papers taken out by the Committee and sent to H. A. Lantz’s store for public after they were first "’examined and marked by the Committee. The books and papers taken from Safe manufactured by Evans 6c Watson were but slightly affected by the intense heat, while those' taken from the Safe manufactured by Farrels & j Herring, were in our judgment, damaged fully fifteen per cent more than those taken from Evans &.
