’ A Siberian Winter. A. traveler in Siberia during the winter, is •o'enveloped in Tuts that be can scarcely move ; and under the thick fur hood, which is'fastened to the bear skin collar and covers the whole face, one can only draw in as it were by stealth a little of the external air, which is so keen that it causes a very pecu liar and painful feeling in the throat and lungs. The distance front ene halting place to another takes about ten hours, during which time the traveller must continue on horseback, as the cumbrous dress makes it insupportable to wade through the snow.— The poor horses suffer at least os much as their riders, for besides the general effect of the cold they are tormented by the ice, form ing in their nostrils and stopping their breath ■ ing. When the icy ground is not covered by snow their hoofs often burst from the effects of the cold. The caravan is also surrounded by a thick cloud of vapor; it is not only liv ing bodies which produce this effect, but even the snow smokes. The evaporations are in stantly changed into millions of needles of ice, which fill (he air and cause a constant slight noise, reseinbl.ng the sound of lorn silk or satin. Even the reindeer seeks the forest to protect himself from the intensity of the cold. In the Tundras, where there is no shelter to be found, the tv bole herd crowd to gether as close as possible to gain a little warmth from each other, and may be seen standing in this way quite motionless. Only the dark bird of winler, the raven, still cleaves the icy air with alow and heavy wing, leav ing behind him a lone line of thin vapor; marking the trace of its solitary flight. The thickest trunks of trees are rent asunder with loud sounds, which in these deserts, fall on the ear like the signal gun at sea ; laige masses of rocks are lorn from their ancient sites ; the ground in the Tundras and in the Rocky valleys cracks, forming wide yowningffssures, from which the waters which were beneath the surface, rise, giving off a cloud of vapor and become immediately changed into ice.— The t ffect of this degree'of cold extends be yond the earth. The beauty of the deep so lar star disappears in the dense atmosphere which the intensity of the cold produces.— The stars still glisten in the firmament, but 'heir brilliancy is dimmed,— Travels in the North. A. Lanlz, in his store, manufactured by Evans Sc Watson, and pul in books and papers precisely alike. | i The fire was started at 8J [o'clock, A. The Safes were then cooled off with water, after which they were opened and the books and papers taken out by the Comrtiittee and sent to 11. A. The books and papers taken from|tbe Safe manufactured by Evans Sc Watson were but -slightly affected by the intense beat, while those taken from the Safe manufactured by Farrels Ac Herring, were in our judgment, damaged fully fifteen per cent more then those taken from Evans Sc Watson's Safe.
