t*- J"-^' Makribd following beautiful and truesemiroenls ate from the pen of that charming writer, Fredrika Bremer, whcKreeb nervations might well become rules of life, s > appropriate are they to many of its pha ses :—■ “Deceive not one another in small things nor in great. One liiile single tie, before now, has disturbed a whole married life. A small cause has often great consequences. Fold not the arms together and sit idle. Laziness is the devil’s" cushion. Do not run much from home. One’s own hearth is of mote »or!_h than gold. Many a marriage, my friends, begins like a rosy morning, and then fills away like a snow .wreath, ' And wiry, my friends l Because the married pair neg lect to be as well pleasing to each other after marriage as before. Endeavor always, my children, (a-please one another; but at the same time keep God in your thoughts. Lav ish not all your love to-day, fur remember ihal marriage has its to-morrow, likewise, and its day after to-morrow, too. Spare, as one may say, furl for the. winter. Consider, my daughters, what the Word wife expresses.— The married woman lis the husband’s domes tic faith; in her hand he must be able to con fide house and family; he able to entrust her the key of his heart, as well as the key of his eating room. His honor and his home are under her keeping—his well-being in her hand. Think of this ( And you, sons, he faithful husbands, and good fathers of fami lies. Act so that your wives shall esteem and love you. CoysE<jt/K?ccES.—A gentleman having ad vertised for a servant; a black man applied for the situation. The old gentleman inquired of him wheth er ho understood consequences —"because if yon Jo not you will not suit me.” Sambo requested him to explain himself, ns he did not know as he exactly understood the meaning of the term. “Why,” said the gentleman, “iff tell you to set the dinner table, I shall' expect you to lay the cloth, pul on the dishes, the sauce &c., as a neerssary consequence, without my being under the necessity of mentioning every item to be placed on the table.” "O ! yes," said Sambo, “if that’s what you call consequences I shall try to suit you.” Accordingly Sambo- was employed, and suited tho old man- very well—minding to carry out consequences in every particular. At length the old gentleman was taken ill, and Sambo was sent m haste for the doctor. Sambo staid a long time, but at length arrived not only with the doctor, but the lawyer to write the will, the undertaker s lake the di mensions of the coffin and the grave-digger to dig the grave. “Why, Sambn,” said the old gentleman. “I merely sent you for the' doctor, and why do you bring all these >meh here 1” “Because,” said Sambo, “you told me I must always consider consequences, and I thought these men (pointing to the men of law and death) the necessary consequences of having the doctor.” Great cry and little wool—A nigger baby j ust born, .. , BUSINESS DIRECTORY. a?® Hydropathic Physician and Surgeon. £LfitA?TD } TIOGA COUNTY, PA. July 13, ISST. ly. «mm watson, T>HILADEL?HIA Manofactu- XT red Salamander Safes, No. 26 S. Fourth Street, PhlUda. Report of the Committee appointed to superintend the Burning of the Iron Safes, at Reading, Feb. <*The undersigned, members of the, committee, do respectfully report, that we saw the two Safes origi nally agreed upon by Farrels Sc Herring and Evans & Watson, placed side by side in a furnace, viz: The Safe in use by-the Paymaster of the Philadel phia and Reading Railroad Company, in bis office at Reading, manufactured by Farrels & Herring, and the safe in use by H. A. Laotz, ia his store, manufactured by Evans & Watsoo, and put in books and papers precisely alike. The fire was started at 8$ o'clock, A. M., and kept up until four cords of green hickory, two cords dry oak and half chestnut top wood were entirely consumed, the whole under the superintendence of Che subscribers, members of the Committee. The Sates were then cooled off with water, aflcr which they were opened and the books and papers taken out by the Committee and sent to H. A. Lanfz’s store for public examination, after they were first examined and marked by the Committee. The books and papers taken from tbo Safe manufactured by Evans &. Watson were but slightly affected by the intense heat, while those taken front the Safe manufactured by Farrels Sc Herring, were in our judgment, damaged folly fifteen per cent more thou those taken from Evans & Watson's Safe. We believe the above to have been a (air and im partial trial of the respective qualities of both Safes. JACOB B. DYSHER, Daniels, hunter, i Having been absent during the burning, we fully coincide with the above statement of the condition of the papers and books taken out of their respective Safes. G. A.
