Thß Dctchmak AflD THE Panic.- Everybody will remember the ‘money panic’ ihey had at San Francisco some years since —and the story “John Phffinix” used to tell of its effects— individually illustrated, JSefore the fright, a frugal old Dutchman, by dint of hord labor, had accumulated some #5OO which he cautiously deposited in one of the bankin'* bouses for safe keeping. Some said that they had “broke.” Next morning, he tremblingly drew his balance and put his shinin° gold in hia pocket. He breathed de cidedly freer, but here was a dilemma. What should he do with it? He did not dare to keep it in his shanty—and as for carrying it about him, it ’twas too precious heavy. So, after a sleepless night or two-in constant apprehension of burglars—he deposited it in a “banking office.” Another day—ihe panic i ncreased —there was a run on his bank — he pushed in—drew his gold—and felt easier once more. Another anxious day and night for his “monish,” and again it was deposited in a safe bank. This lime he felt safer than ever before, and went quicily to his work. But ihe panic reached that bank, and anxious depositors besieged the doors. Mynheer heard the news, and pul post-haste, book in hand, for the scene of action—jammed in with the crowd—drew his gold new and bright—pyl it safe in his corduroys—was happy once more —but here was the dilemma again—where to put it. He had gone pretty much the rounds of the banks, and having had such narrow escapes, couldn’t trust them any more. He sal down on a curb-stone, and soliloquized thus : “I pul my monish in von bank, ven he preak ; 1 put him in de oder bank, ven he preak too ; I draw him out; I can no keep him to home ; I pul him into dis bank, now dis one preak; vat te (uyvil shall 1 do? I lake.him home and sow him up in my frow’s petticoat, and if she prakes I prakes her head!” One of the Panthers. —The Bingham lon Republican says :—lt is generally sup. posed lhal Panthers had entirely disappeared from lhe Empire Stale. Such, however, is not the case. We saw one this morning which was shot in the town of Walton, Dela ware county in this State, on Monday of last week, (23d November.) In order to gratify j laudable curiosity to see one of these ‘natives,” the proprietor has brought him to Binghamton, and will exhibit him for a day nr two in a room of the third story of El uridgk’s building on Washington street, next south of the Franklin House. The last meal which the Panther look, consisted of a fine urge sheep. He was shot by Mr. Jonas P. 'raser of Walton. The exhibitor will relate iome of the exploits of the Panther, &c. Go and see him. Douglas the Calf and not Douglas :iie Demagogue. —A most excellent joke is old of Doug'as, by a correspondent of the than Courier , as having occurred at the re ;tnt Slate Fair. The officers of the society «ere engaged in announcing the awards and lehvenng the premiums, when as the ‘little pant’ was promenading near, he heard his name called loudly and vociferously from the ilandJand supposing probably, that he was called j upon for a speech, ha immediately mounted the platform, and to his great amaz aenl and mortification no discovered hat’the call was upon one of his namesakes o whom the Committee had awarded a pre kmim of a silver goblet for being the second lest two year old Durham bull calf on the ground. The reader can well imagine the chop-(alien aspect (he ambitious Senator’s lounicnance presented on this sudden lower ing of his aspiring feathers.
