COHCiWiTIONS. ~ ' JFbr the Agitator. Common ScIiot»I»-G«Kle«* Scliools. The moaning of ihia lorm, suggested by qtir School Law is liable to some misappre hension, Tl\ey are schools having different departments and adapted lo scholar* Of dif- Parent ages and attainments. They require houses of two or more rooms with a teacher in cadi room adapted to t ho grade o( schol ars in his or department, it w 'd be evident to every educator of children that such a school is a very important consideration wherever it is practicable lo establish it. Such schools con not exist in the more rural sections of the county. The popula tion is not dense enough to fill two fronts with scholars, averaging from thirty lo fifty each. The wants of such localities can best be supplied with a single school, centrally loj cated, with a good school house and a good teacher in it. Bur double, treble or graded schools are practicable in all our villages;' and in the populous center of nearly every township of the county. They are possible, perhafls practicable in every place where, within a radius of one and a half or two miles, that is a diameter of three miles, a population of one hundred children can be assembled. According lo this opinion every borough may have a graded school; nearly every township may have one, and a few townships may hive two such schools. But when we say that every village and nearly every township of this cobnty may have such schools, we are using a word much milder than the necessities of most localities of this kind demand. It is safe, it is the spirit of our school system, to say they should have such schools. It is utterly im possible for the best teacher in the county or' State to do justice lo the mass of scholars of all ages, attainments and sexes, that are turned in to him in many of these undivided, unclassified, metropolitan schools. Children are spoilt aud disgusted with the whole busi ness of going to school in such a heterogene ous jam as some of our village schools pre sent. How then shall we clear the way for such schools as arc needed in these central, populous localities. We answer most em phatically enlarge your district corporations, where you have a borough corporation, so as to embrace all the territory and taxables within one mile and a half of the center* This can be done by either abolishing or en larging your borough corporations. For all practical purposes of such boroughs, where a corporation is needed, we think they are far too small at any rate. Then clear away every school house within about three miles of such a nucleus. Then build a house large enough to accommodate all the scholars ’within two miles of it. Prepare yourselves to take all that comes, generally free. Pro vide good teachers, if possible, permanent ones. And on the score of economy, ad vancement, good order, usefulness every way, such schools should not be surpassed in .New York, Philadelphia, or even Boston. It is one of the excellencies of our School Law that it contemplates just such schools whereever they are practicable. Schools, where there shall bo infant, youth, and high department—a school where the child can learn its A., 8., C’s amid all the attraction and freedom of childhood—a school where the higher branches can be taught, and teachers educated and qualified ; in short a model school in the neighborhood of, and ac cessable to all who would seek a good Eng lish education without the dangers and ex pense of going abroad. In contravention of this humane and phi lanthropic provisiqn of our law, potty schools are established ans puffed into a poor dying Jilp in the very precincts of our villages anjd town capitols. Often three or five such school houses are within two miles of. a village. The school that should be the graded school is smothered out, or grades downwards. The house is not competent lo hold the schol ars even of the corporation proper, much less the children that should be educated there. Parents pay their school lax lo one district and send their children lo another, sometimes of necessity, and sometimes pay ing a round school bill in the bargain. We can think of but one school, that of Law renceville, that has sufficient capacity of room lo accommodate all the scholars within a radius of two miles, and at the same time an internal organization that adapts it for nil classes. Perhaps there are others. We shall know soon, and wo know we shall be happy lo give public commendation of the fact. We know enough already lo convince us that thp want of these centra] graded schools of the large liberal sort is a great want in the places of this county where they are practicable. We are confident if the citizens of all our villages and central loca tions would consider the very great benefit of such schools m respect both lo economy and utility, they would begin to push further off the little school houses, and introduce an ed ucational machine that should be worthy of them. CASE, - -Ji - FOBALLTHE PURPOSES OP & FAMILY PHYSIO.’ ' Tinmfi bus long existed a public demand Cat an effective pnrgntivo pill which could be relied on as sure and perfectly awe in its operation. This has been prepared to meet that demand, and on exten sive mil of (tk virtues b as conclasirely shown with what sneepss it accomplishes the purpose designed. It is easy to'mahe a physical pilt, but hot easy to . make tho best of dll pilis —one which should have none of the objections, but all the advantages, of every other. This has been attempted here, and with what success we would respectfully Submit' to the public decision.' It. has been unfortunate for tho patient hitherto that almost every' ptirgative medicine is acrimonious and irritating to the bow els. .Thisis not. Many of them produce so much griping pain and revulsion in the system as to mors than counterbalance the good to be derived horn them. These pill* produceno irritation or pain, unless it arise from a previously existing obstruc tion or derangement in bowels. Being purely vegetable, no harm can arise from their use in any quantity ; hut it is betterthat any medicine should bo taken judiciously. Minute directions for their use in the several diseases to which they are ap , plicabla are given on the box. Among the com plaints which have been speedily cured by them, we may mention liver Complaint, in its various forma of Jaundice, Indigestion, Languor and Loss of Ap petite, Listlcssness, Irritability, Bilious Headache, Bilious Fever, Fever and Ague, Pain in tho Side and Loins; for, in truth, all these are but the con sequence of diseased action in tho liver. As an aperient they afford prompt and sure relief in Cos tfvencss, Piles, Colic, Dysentery, Humors, Scrof ula and Scurvy, Colds with soreness of tho body. Ulcers and impurity of tho blood; jn short, any and every case where a purgative is required. . ' , 'They have also produced some singularly suc cessful cures in Rheumatism, Gout, Dropsy, Gravel, Erysipelas, Palpitation of the Heart, Pams in the' Back, Stomach, and Side. They should be freely taken in the spring of tho year, to purify the blood and prepare the system for tho change of seasons. An occasional doso stimulates the stomach and bowels into healthy action, and restores tho appe tite and vigor. They purify the blood, and, by their stimulant action on the circulatory system, reno vate the strength of the body, and restore the wasted or diseased energies of the whole organism* Hence an occasional dose is advantageous, cron though no serious derangement exists; but un necessary dosing should never be carried too far, as every purgative medicine reduces the strength, when taken to excess. The thousand cases in which a physic is required cannot be enumerated here, but they suggest themselves to ■ the reason of every body; and it is confidently this pill will answer a better purpose than any thing which has hitherto been available to mankind. When their virtues ore once known, the public will no longer doubt what remedy to employ when in need of a cathartic medicine. Being sugar-wrapped they aro pleasant to take, and being purely icgctable, no norm can arise from their use m any quantity. For minute directions see wrapper on the Box. PREPARED JJV JAMES C.
