TB!) LAST NIGHT ON EARTH.—There iis something perfectly awful in the con 4emplation of the last night on earth to a -man•doomed to be executed.on the mor ;row. ' 9 t natural death can be looked for ward to with very different feelings. It is known to be inevitable, and we do not re xard it as anything which we have brought .upon ourselves. But a person sentenced Ito be executed - for - a - crime—with what terrible remorse, with what bitterness and intensity of regret, must he recall the un fortunate fatal act for which he is to suf fer. He now realizes, which he did not at the time of its commission, how it in volves othersas well as himself, and how terrible has been his mistake. He is close ly watched, not so much as to prevent escape, which is known to be impossible as to guareagainst the possibility of sui , cide. Self-destruction ! It has come to thispass at last, and the officers of the law act upon the presumption that a man will take his own life; if he can, to avoid the execution in the presence of witnesses provided by the laW ! Is it not dreadful to think of such a condition ? The wea ry hours—weary with the fearful anxie ty—but quick as thought in their passage, because they are so few, either in sleeping or"waking. If he sleeps, it is probably to dream of death on the gallows. If he --wake.c - it - hrbut - to fled his — dream the dread shadow of the reality. What a last night on earth ! Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd, a bridal couple, from Montgomery County, Va., on their way to Pulaski Alum Springs, while cross ing a mountain in buggy, during a thun --dttillorse ~iok~r%gGE at a fah of lightning, and .shied from the road; and the party were precipitated down a preci pice one hundred and seventy feet high. f-he buggy was shattered to pieces, and the groom badly bruised. The bride had her collar bone and ankle dislocated, teeth — knocked out, and vas otherwise Wdty injured.
