There will be something new to laugh at If tbe Nebraska Democrats should de nounoe Bryan for bolting Dablman and Indorse Harmon for bolting Bryan. The beat wave has reached Europe at last. Our multimillionaire tout lata abroad, who ran away from It, are learn Jng even in this world that Intense beat can not be escaped by those to whom It is coming. Prkhidknt Simon of Hayti lias taken to bed witb nervous prostection because some of his policies were not acceptable to the people. Suppose President Taft bad acted that way about reciprocity Simon should cheer up. Thk Canonsburg Notes quotes our re mark that more attention ought to be paid to securing safe and sane autodriv ing, and closes the editorial by saying that cheap red whisky causes more acci dents tbau tbe average person suspects. Franklin News. Says the New York Tribune: "Presi dent Tart's message to the Senate, giving In detail tbe history of tbe elimination from tbe forest reserves ol 12,800 acres on Controller Bay, Alaska, puts a quietus on one ot tbe most remarkable "near" scan dais ever fabricated In American politics, The ofTrotoery with which an alleged postscript to a letter on tbe files of the Interior Department was thrown to credulous public and even offered to committee of tbe House of Representa lives, anxious to unearth sensations in its scrutiny of the work of the departments, Las had few parallels in our history." Political Dates. All persona Interested, who desire In formation In nutshell, will find tbe following to be both accurate and com plete. Last day for filing state ment of expenses for November election. Just Playing Politics. Politics isjust now running riot in the United Stales congress. Tbe best in terests of tbe country at large have been forced aside with a view to promoting Presidential ambitions. Tbe regular Re publicans are having precious little to say In the work. They are suppressed. The nsurgents or Progressives and the Demo crats are In command. Occasionally these political elements uutte and accom plish something that for tbe Instsnt pro motes tbe purposes of one or other of the many Presidential possibilities, but as a general rule they spend tbetime fighting. They are simply sparring for time and position and all at the expense of tbe people. Tbe Progressives are determined that La Follette shall be the candidate for tbe Presidency and are busy bringing grist to bis mill. Tbe Democrats are just as determined that Mr. Uuderwood, or Speaker Clark shall be tbe candidate to succeed Mr. Taft. In tbe meantime tbe fight between these elements goes on witb much bitterness. Senator Boies Penrose, tbe accepted leader of tbe regular Republicans In tbe Senate, has announced that tbe interests of the whole people may beet be served by an early adjournment of Congress He contends that no matter what bills are ground out through tbe selfish combln tion of the Democrats and Progressives the President will veto them. If Senator Penrose Is able to force bis judgment up on the warring factions Congress will ad' ourn finally within 10 days. In the Nebraska Republican State con vention last week President Taft'a ad' ministration received the most unquali fled endorsement, contrary to the boasts of La Follette and bis insurgent following that it would be turned down. Tbe con vention advised tbe people to Dot con demn reciprocity until it had had a fair trial. Tbe LaFolletlers didn't ao much as get a look In witb their preeldential boomiet. Cooksbiirg. We are sorry to report that Jay Coster is very ill with typhoid fever. He is be ing attended by Dr. Brewer. Tbe story and song service giyen at Greenwood Sunday night was well at' tended and every one was well pleased Tbe story was well read and tbe singing was splendid. D. E. Wilson, under whose supervision it was given, can certainly be congratulated on this pleas lng service. Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Kurtz of Clarion visited at the borne of Mr. and M George Braden last week. Miss Elizabeth Wray of Grove City is visiting friends in this vicinity. A party of surveyors are making survey down tbe Clarion river and we understand it is for a railroad. We cer tainly wish this to be true and hope to see Cooksburg a booming place in tbe near future. Several of our people attended quar terly meeting at Clarington last Sunday Mrs. T. B. Cook and daughter Mary Louise left Friday for Atlantio City, where they expect to stay for a fe weeks. The blackberries are very plentiful In our vicinity and quite number of onr people are busily engaged In berry pick ing. Harry Knight, who is employed at Mayburg, spent Sabbath with bis par ents. Tbe well that is being drilled on A. J Cook's farm, had to be shut down on ac count of some break in tbe machinery. Our people were surprised to learn of tbe marriage of Mrs. Knapp, of this place, to Mr. Miller, of Kingsville. We Join their many friends In wishing them much happiness in tbeir walk through life. Mrs. Clarissa Paup of Kane Is visiting friends bere this week. A great number of our people have been suffering from an attack of grippe, but we are glad to report them to be better. Tbe many friends ol Mr. and Mrs. Will Harte were pleased to get the announce ment that a young son had arrived in tbeir home. They were former residents of this place. 8 100 KKYVAKII, 8IOO. William Cole, with whom almost everybody In this community bad been familiarly acquainted for many years past, Is no more. His dead body was found beside the road leading from Pleasantville to Tlonesla, a mile or so from tbe former place, Monday afternoon. Some children first found tbe body and gave the alarm. He bad been at Pleas antville during the day and bad evidently started for bis borne which he made witb bis brother, Andrew Cole, near tbe Bean farm, and when between tbe homes of Ernest Holts and J. H. Bottsford was either overcome by the beat or had heart trouble. He was taken to tbe latter' borne and tbe oounty authorities were notified. William Cole was born in Woodcock township, Crawlord oounty, Jan. 12, 1846, and was therefore in his 66th year. His parents were Michael and Sarah Jane (Ryan) Cole, and bis mother Is atlll Hy ing, as are also the following brothers and sisters: Andrew, Frank, Ernest, Wesley, Alex., Charles Elmer, and Mra. George Davis, ofSbamburg, Pa. "Bill," as be was familiarly known In this com munity, was perhaps one of tbe bet known characters in this section. Quite eccentric In bis ways, but always good natured and contented with his lot, and everybody had a kindly feeling toward blm, and many were tbe kindnesses shown by them in extending tbe little creature comforts upon bis frequent visits to tbe community. Peace to his ashes. Whig Hill. Mrs. Ellen White of Erie, Pa., is visit ing her daughter and family bere, Mrs. Chas. Price. Mrs. Rachel Barber and grandson, Jay Barber, of Falls Creek, Pa., are speeding lew week on tbe bill and attending campmeetlng. Miss Ethel Douglas and brother of Kelly Hill were oa tbe hill on Sunday last. W. F. Welngard is employed at Kel- lettvllle for a few weeks. Boys, what about tbe serenade? All the musical apparatus or what not must bave been in nse. Sorry to disappoint, but better days will surely come. Miss Dorothy Sbunk spentseveral days at Niagara Falls tbe past week, returning Saturday. Witb six ministers In attendance at tbe campmeetlng, there is truly no exouse for not hearing tbe word expounded. How to Kecoguize Mushrooms. Never gather or eat fungi that grow in woods or that bave white gills. Avoid all those that you cannot positively identify as the common or edible mushroom that is known to tbe scientists as agarlcui campestris. In all parts of the world in which this tungi grows, It Is known and used as a food. If its characteristic and habitat are memorized there is little danger of it being confused with the poisonous growths. Its stalk is from two to six Inches in height and never more than an inch In diameter, On tbe upper end of the stalk is an umbrella-shaped cap, tbe color and thickness of which varies. The cap may be white or cream color or running the gamut ol shades down to deep brown. Tbe stem Is usu ally of a cream tint and has near tbe cap a ring of material sometimes called tbe annulus, which forms a protection for tbe delicate nnder-surface of the cap. On tbis under-surface are tbe gills or Israel lie. In the early stages of tbe growth of the mushroom these gills are pink; later they turn brown or even brownish black. Theagarlcus Invariably grows Id open fields and meadows. It is never found in woods or shaded places. If tbe casual visitor to tbe country will remember tbis he can ellmiuate ninety per cent, of this danger. From Physical Culture for August. A neighboring exchange notes that blackbirds bave greatly increased in numbers of late and attributes tbe cause to the fact that species of birds has come under the protection of tbe law, which bas little or nothing to do with the in crease as blackbirds never were greatly molested by the sboiter or sportsman. Tbe same paper tells how destructive these birds are to crops and advocates tbeir extermination by tbe inhuman method of feeding them poisoned grain. Tbe wretch who would resort to such detestlble means of killing off onr song or insectivorous birds should be "drawn and quartered," or at least be placed wbere he would not see, or bear the music of the birds for tbe balance of his days. Even the saucy little sparrow which pluck ily fights its way through the blazing beat of the summer as well as the stern rigors of winter, bas right which every man pos sessing tbe common instincts of humanity is bound to respect, No, don't poison the birds, Have mercy. Dairy and Food Commissioner Foust has Issued a statement of tbe results of bis Bureau's Investigations made tbis summer under the new milk and cream act and tbe act prohibiting the addition to milk and cream of dye-stuffs and drugs, such as were formerly much used as preservatives. The Commissioner re ports that 4,000 samples bave been pur chased by bis agents in about 150 cities and towns representing nearly every county of tbe Commonwealth. In but eight Instances was formaldehyde dls covered, six of these being In Allegheny county, one in Johnstown and one In York. No other preservative and no added dye were in any case detected. This, tbe Commissioner notes, is a most excellent showing as contrasted witb the conditions existing few years ago, when such additions were of common occur rence. Wben our friends come back from tbeir long and delightful automobile trips, tbe man and woman who stayed at home can get even by singing tbe praises of tbe cool nights in tbe comfortable home, tbe vegetables and flowers, fresh from the garden, and the hours on the porch witb nothing to tire and no cranks, and the sustaining consciousness of en joying the possession of an immense amount of sense. Blizzard. To us who are "machlueless" this wIbb observation appeals most strenuously, even if It does leave a "sour grape" taste in the moulb, Cuts and bruises may be healed in about one-third the time required by the usual treatuieot by applying Chamber lain's Liniment. It Is an antiseptic and causes such Injuries to heal without ma turation. This liniment also relieves soreness of tbe muscles and rheumatic pains. Eor sale by all dealers.
