THE FOREST REPUBLICAN. i. C. WCNK, Editor Proprietor. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1910 rrcsldont Tafl's Message. The annual niPDSHge ol President Taft to the Congress of the United States la given in the Rkpcblican today, and we trust will receive careful perusal by all of Its readers. It will be found a moat In teresting document and in tbe lortn in which we give it tbe ordinary reader can go through it in a half hour. Read it. Chkkr up, young man, and buy a safety razor, or let your whiskers grow. An 82-year-old farmer of Massachusetts who adopted tbe latter plan asserts posi tively that bad be patronized barber shops bis shaving bill would have mounted to f'24,0OO. Had be shaved him self he might have added Immensely to bis savinga by selling his whiskers to bair mattress factory. Taft Is the tirst Republican President of the tepublio who is also as much the public servant of the south as be Is. of the' north.' -What Lincoln might have beeq Is left to us to conjecture.- He was a marvelous man, a consuuiate politician, nd a political sage. But it was left to Taft to finish the work of brotherhood, , and there ia no community of tbe eutire south where he would not be welcomed as a brother. Washington Post. A complktk retraotion of the statement made before election, to the effect that John K. Tener, Governor-elect, bad been seen in an intoxicated condition at Kit tanning, has been made by Rev. W. L. Barrett, pastor of tbe First Presbyterian church of Blairsville, and tbe criminal libel suit instituted by Mr. Tener baa been withdrawn. Tbe parson closes his letter of retraction in these words: "I, therefore, injustice to you, as well as to myself, withdraw tbe statement, as I wish to set right as far as possible the wrong which was done you." It would seem that tbe Interstate Com merce Commission is "commercing" some these days, and that when a citizen bas paid for a railroad mileage be is en titled to travel it out or get bis money back. Tbe commission bas decided that time limits for the redemption of railroad mileage books are invalid, and every body who travels will be interested in knowing It. The decision waa the out come of a complaint of a western traveler who bad bought a mileage book limited to 18 months and neglected to attempt its redemption until tbe railroad people told bim it waa ton late. That the advancing railroad rate as proposed by various trsltlo lines will be of immense advantage to Standard Oil and a detriment to the independent ship pers of the country, was the declaration of President Bolls, ot the National Pe troleum association at the rate bearing. Independent oil dealers are unalterably opposed to tbe proposed Increase, declar ing they will be unable to compete with tbe oil truBl II the rates are increased. And this Is why every trust paper lu the land is today crying out against govern mental Interference with "vested rights," . and declaring that such methods are bound to ruin business. This is the very thing that Roosevelt bas been contending for, and tbe very policies which the Taft administration ia endeavoring to bring about the control and curbing of mallo lous trust methods. Why can't the people see iiT Only a few weeks more and the 1!11 calendara will be banging on the wall. It bas been but a lew weeks atnue we substituted tbe 1010 almanaa for that or WOi. How scandalously time does fly! Looking backward it seems but yester day that we went tisbing in our bare feet and booked up our trousers with one suspender, using a shingle nale as a sub stitute for an absent button. Time In its remorseless flight, seems to be bustling us toward tbe tomb with more celerity than there is and real necessity for. Personally we are in no hurry, and would offer no otifections II the chauffeur would shift to low gear for a while. Punxsu tawney Spirit. Br'er Smith's pessimism reminds us of another good christian gentleman we once knew, who, in a rather terrifying electri cal storm, and just after a particularly sharp crack, cautiously remarked, "Easy, Lord, please. My wife's afraid of thun der!" Cheer np, brother, and take a bracer. Don't you know we have you slated for United States Senator? Coroner Ford, of Philadelphia, re ports, after holding an inquest over tbe boay of a Uuiversity of Pennsylvania medical student, that three-fourths of ibe students in that department of tbe uni versity are In the habit of taking drugs and depending upon them for tbe stimu lation tbey foolishly believe will help them when tired or disinclined to do bard mental work. Strvchulne ia the favorite poison, it is declared. As these young men are expecting to ba practicing physicians and burgeons, snd as nodiug taker or whisky-drinker who frequently Indulges in the practice is fit to take cbaige of the fight for life beiug made by fathers, mothers and little children in the homes of the Commonwealth, it seems to be the duty of the State Board of Medical Examiners to ascertain the facts, know tbe moral history of each medical student as to tbe drug-taking vice and protect tbe publio from tbe grave dangera which threaten it. So thinks the Fraukllu News, With a population of 7.065,111, Penn sylvania is easily the most important commonwealth in the country. New York with its 0,000,000 and more makes . sn apparently better showing, but this disappears when it is remembered that more than one-half of this total is In New York City alone, where the East 8ide foreigners swell Ibe figures. Pennsyl vania has over 6,000,000 outside Its princi pal city, while New York lias only s little more tbao 4,000,000. The population of Krle county, New York, is tolerably near to that of Allegheny county, in this state, so that tbe contrast is even more remark able. The area of New York is larger than that of Pennsylvania and its arable Hand much greater, but Pennsylvania has tbe larger rural population. The popula tion of Pennsylvania considerably ex "ids tlm' 1 r the Whole United States just when it was 7,239,881, and . ;i,:(t of theoountry in 1700. looy"v, . la roost " in ' Uiioo" nke up a great com- snla may lay claim notion to tbe lead--Blizzaid. There will he no Christmas tree lu the school house this year, as has been tbe custom for some time, neither will there be any at Minister church. But at Hast ings there will be an entertainment on Friday before Christmas, and no doubt will be worth attending. Our water is fine as silk and will be good for tbe winter should we not get any more water before tbe winter freeze-up E. P. Rayborn of Mayburg was at the Rupert borne for Edison records on Saturday evening accompanied by Frank Ians, and they found the road very rough and rocky. It reminded them of the road to Dublin. Several of our people gave James Welsh s neighborly call on Sunday last and had a nice visit witb the happy farmer. Mrs. s. A. Kioch was a Kellettville shopper on Saturday last leaving tbe children with Mr. K., who did his fall butchering while she was away. Leroy Cooper of Minister, and Frank Dodge of Wellers, were visitors in the village on Sunday last, calling cn friends. Win. Meager spent Saturday and Sun day witb his parents at Wellers. As yet we have not beard of the oyster supper furnished by tbe losers, but it will be given In the near future. In Memorial!!. Whereas, on Ibe 25th day of November, 1010, it pleased Almighty God In his all wise providence to call from our midst our beloved brother, Herman Blum, whom we held in high esteem, and whose loss we deeply feel: Therefore we bow in bumble submission to bim wbo doeth all things well, considering that our loss is his gain. Resolved, That by tbe death of our be loved brother our order has lost a faithful member, the family a loving husband and father, and the community a faithful friend. Resolved, That the members of Forest Grange, No. 853, P. or II., extend to the bereaved family their sincere sympathy, commending them to bim wbo doeth all things well, which is the only source from which resignation and co nfort can be derived. Resolved, That as a tribute of respect to our departed brother, our charter be draped in mourning for thirty days; that these resolutions be placed on the min utes of the Grange, a copy be presented to the bereaved family, and a copy to each of the county papers for publication. Muumn & Woolis, Solicitors. December 5, 1'JIO. The Keystone party will not occupy the second place on tbe olfioial ballot in Pennsylvania either In the election of 1011 or 1912, though it polled next to tbe highest number of votes in tbe recent gubernatorial election. Ever since tbe election the authorities at Harrisburg have been beselged by questioners wbo wanted to know if the Keystoners will have second place, but the answer is that it will remain just where It is, because the vote In a presidential year Is taken as a guide. Tbe Keya'.nne party was nut in existence in 1018, when the last presi dential election waa held, and Ita vote this fall cannot give it a higher place on the ballot. Upon tbe vote the party polls In 1912 will depend wbetbtr it takes second place. (ood News From the Youth's Com panion. The parliamentary register for 1800 showed that there was then only one pot walloper In all England. One see ing the term for the tirst time might easily imagine that n pot walloper was n species of Ichthyosaurus of some oth er reptile of a past age. It will be dis covered upon Inquiry, however, that the term "pot walloper" is literally one who bolls a pot and w as applied to vot ers In certain boroughs of England where before the passage of the re form bill of 1S32 the qualifications for suffrage was to have boiled (walloped) his own pot In the parish for six months.
