Remember. Saturday, October 7th is the last day for tbe payment of taxea entitling one to a rote in November. Republicans are urged to see that their taxes are paid in time to secure their vote. Uavk you paid your taxe? If not, don't delay if you care to voio this fall. Kansas reports that her corn crop for the year is worth f75,000,000. Why does Kansas continue to worry about a iew million dollars worth of oil? One of Mr. Carnegie's libraries in In diana has been throwu back on bis bands, Mr. Carnegie may retaliate by excluding the Indiana books from his other libra ries. Norway and Sweden will not fight. A wave of the hand from President RooHevelt will be all that is Decessary in this small instance of international irri tation. A scarcity of words is reported in the eastern market Grover Cleveland has just finished giving bis "lull and un biased" opinion ol tbe woman suffrage question. , It is j list as well to abandon plans for a home-coming reception to Secretary Taft. It would puzzle us to know what to pre pare for a man who has been dining on roast wha le. "Let well enough alone" is the way Vice President Fairbanks expresses tbe "stand pat" principle. The people of Ohio will not ignore this adyice from a close neighbor. President Morton announces that the Equitable will close up the Gale Savarin and quit dealing in intoxicants. Tills is another indication that the Equit able is going to sober up. To its chagrin the New York Equita ble Life Insurance has discovered that it is running a cafe with a bar attached. If the directors "keep on" they will find out all about thuir own business after a while. New Jkr.hky scientists claim that tbe race eventually will die of thirst. This will not cause consternation among Ken tucky Colonels for it is the lakes and rivers only that are to dry up and not the distilleries and breweries. Hall Caine says be would rather write the story of tbe American million aires than be President of tbe United States. We would rather he would, also. Let Hall calm bis fears; no one will chloroform blm while he Is in this coun try and thrust tbe presidency upon him. Mb. Tom Taogart, chairman of tbe national Democratic committee, denies that be ever solicited campaign funds from an insurance corporation. The po litical death of Mr. Parker was seen to be too close at hand for any lifo insur ance company to be expected to take a risk on him. Pennsylvania (unie Laws. SHIELDS, Tbe Republican nominee for Aasociato Judge, was born near the village of Bax ter, Jefferson county, Jan, 12, 1S60, in which locality he grew to young man hood, attending the publio schools until he was 13 years of age. At that tender age be began his career in tbe lumber woods during the winters, in tbe spring rafting and running lumber on Red bank creek and the Allegheny River. His summers were spent in working on the farm. In 1871 he was united in marriage with Miss Rebecca Brown, also of Jeffer son county. From the years 1879 to 18!X) Mr. Shields was engaged in carpenter work, being employed a part of that time in bridge building for the Allegheny Valley railroad. As a mark of his suc cess at the carpenter trade, many build ings in the viciuity of bis home stand as monuments to day. lu tbe spring of 1890 Mr. Shields en gaged in lumbering In Forest county, having as partners in tbe business his brother, J. II. Shields, and R. M. Morri son. At this period be moved with bis family, consisting of wife, one son and one daughter, to Jenks township, this County, locating in tbe heart of an im mense hemlock forest on Big Salmon creek two and a half miles north o( Ma rienville. Here be superintended tbe erection of a substantial mill and began the manufacture of hemlock lumber, tbe firm name being R. M. Morrison it Co, In 1882 Mr. Morrison sold bis interest in tbe property to his partners, who suc cessfully conducted the plant till they bad finished tbe tract. It was here that Mr. Shields, by hard work from tbe grey dawn of morning till lata at night made bis real start financially, He did bis day's work on tbe mill besides planning and arranging all the outside work, and at night, while others were asloep, kept bis books, and be knows by experience what it is to fill every post on a saw mill, from tbe cutting of the tree to tbe mar keting of tbe lumber. In the spring of 1896 Mr. Shields was attacked with grip, which terminated In rheumatism, and finally in leaving him a cripple for life. During this illness his life bung In the balance for many weeks, and it seemed only indomitable will and pluck that pulled him through. Finish ing up his lumbering operations an Sal mon creek, Mr, Shields engaged in lumbering again in 1889 at what is now known as Loleta, bis partners being C. W. Auisler, J. C. Campbell and C. R. Vasbiuder. Here be and Mr. Campbell erected one of the finest lumbering plants in the Btate, in the center of a 3600-acre tract of hemlock. The follow ing year bis health again broke down and be was obliged to relinquish for a time active labor, and for three months he was treated at a Buffalo hospital. He disposed of bis lumbering Interests and moved to Marlenville where be has since resided. In the great fire which almost wiped (lie town off the map Mr. Shields was a heavy loser, yet with that generosity which has characterized bis whole llfo, be gave bis check to the relief committee for $500, besides extending a helping band in many other directions to the sufferers in that awful conflagration. During all tbe years of bis active busi ness life in which be bas employed hun dreds of men, no one bas ever beard a complaint lrom any of them against their employer, but on tbe contrary no man ever worked for him wbo would not again gladly enter bis employ, and wbo have only praise to give of tbe treatment received at his bands. Mr. Shields has been from principle a Republican all bis life, believing the suc cess of that party to be for tbe best inter. est of all concerned, especially the man wbo is obliged to earn his bread by tbe sweat of bis brow. He has never hereto fore sought an office, but bas frequently been called upon to fill positions of trust In township affairs, and at present is an honored member of the school board of Jenks township. He is one of tbe pleas antest and most hospitable of men, and a tower of strength for good in bis com munity, A man whose honor bas never been questioned, and who would adorn the office for which bis party bas nomi nated bim; one who would carry no ha tred or malice upon tbe Bench, and wbo would retire wilb greater honor and more friends than when he entered upon the responsible duties of tbe office of Asso ciate Judge. Such a man ought to and will be elected. Next Saturday is the last day for pay ing taxes in ordor to secure your vote this fall. See to it Republicans. Those Ohio Democrats who are pre dicting a landslide this year will probably find themselves "under it," when it comes. lihiialic ( urea.
