THE FOREST REPUBLICAN. 4. I. WCNK, CDITOR 4 PdOPHHTOB. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1897 WeylIcr cannot find the Cubans, but the Cubans can find the supplies, which he is trying to get from Ha vana, without the least difficulty. Lou Payn thinks the newspapers take too many liberties with men - in public life. That's a fact Lou. They tell the truth about them sometimes. If advice is of any benefit to a man, President McKinley certainly ought to know bow to conduct his af fairs by the time he gets his cabinet completed. Mies Anthony wants a law com pelling husbands to give half their earnings to their wives. Should wives give half their earnings to their husbands, Susan? After securing the co-operation of a friend, Coxey, the bobo king, has named bis new party the United States party. The party will proba bly be a go same as Cozey's ormy was. At the present rate of income and . outgo, it will not be many months be fore the incoming administration will he forced to face another deficit, un less a new tariff law is quickly passed. Therefore, the promptitude of the present Ways and Means committee in getting together facta for the use f the committee of the next Con gresswhich will not be so very dif ferent from the present committee, in order that the new tariff law may be passed as quickly as possible, is as welcome to those who will have charge of the national finances as it is to the people in general. We cap ask nothing better than that Con gress will show the same promptitude. Prosperity Awaits Protection. There are some complaints by the doubting Thomases that the election of McKinley has nut transported lis back at once to such prosperity as we had in 1891 and 1802, under the Mc Kinley law. That is about as rea sonable as to expect roses to bloom out of' doors in December because Tune is coming. Because we know June is coming, we may order rose trees, but we don't expect the roses to bloom until the December snow is gone. While the Wilson-Gorman bill is the law of the land we cannot expect any great measure of prosper ity. The most that we can hope for is that we may bo spared from fur ther disaster. Merchants have the same inducements to buy abroad that tbey have had from the beginning of the law. It is true that many mills which were closed have started up, and that many others which would have shut down in case of McKinley's defeat have continued. So much sub stantial good has come from the mere prospect of protection in the future. But these mills have gone on with work in expectation of future orders, when protection to American indus tries will once more be established, rather than to meet present demands. Confidence has beeu restored and fur ther disaster prevented by the assur- auce of the re-establishment of the American system; but real wide' spread prosperity cannot come until protection to American industries is a reality of the present and not a promise of the future. There has been a good deal of anxiety lest the Senate should fail of a majority in favor of a protective tariff, and there by the country be doomed to suffer .under (he infliction of the disaster creating Gorman-Wilson bill for an other two years. But Senator Prit chard is always ready to support a protective-tariff measure, and his re election helps toward a majority in the Senate in favor of the protection of American industries and of Amer ican labor. A number of members of the Ca nadian parliament have been in Washington trying to look after Ca nadian interests, which they fear may be injured by the new tariff policy to be adopted. We have good will for all and "malice toward none," but we confess that we would rather have Canadian interests threatened than American interests, as was the case when the present free trarfe adminis tration came into power four years ago. There are no means of knowing just what arrangements will be made with the Canadians, but there is no reason to suppose that it will expose tne farmers of the northern border to J.ho evils of free admittance of Cana dian eggs, butter, bay, etc., or which will continue to admit Canadian lum ber on present terms. Both farmers and luraberuieu have suffered too much already under the present law. It was for something different that they rolled up their big majorities for McKinley and protection. In regard to the question of Dr. SchaelTer't successor in the office o State Superintendent of Public In-f struction the Wilkesbarre Record says : "The Record does not pretend to be a nou-partisan paper, but it does recognize that there are some offices in the filling of which politics should be given secondary considera tion. The office of Superintendent of Publio Instruction is one of that class." Dr. Sch as tier's reappoint ment has been urged by both Iiepub . lieu us and Democrats all over the State. The leading educators of the Htate have expressed to the Gover nor their appreciation of Dr. Scbaef fer's unusual qualifications for the of fice. He is generally regarded as the most cdmpetent man who has ever held the office. Certainly he bas had no superior, and it is to be hoped that the Governor will not take the chances of Laving an inferior succeed him. Phila. Inquirer. The above reflects tha sentiment of .a very large portion of the people of Ibis State who take an interest in ed ucational matters. Dr. Schaeffer's work at the head off the School De partment has told wouderfully for the rapid advancement and permaneut improvement of the schools through out the Commonwealth, and bis re lention in that high position would give very geueral satisfaction.
