STROUP, of Jenks Township, as a can didate for Delegate to the Republican State Convention. Republican Committee Meeting'. At tbe call of Chairman J. I. Woods the Republican County Com mittee met at tbe Sheriff'! office at tbe court bouse, Monday evening at 7:30. Tbe Chairman called the com mittee to order and appointed Leon Watson secretary. He stated tbe ob ject of tbe meeting to be to appoint a day for tbe holding of the Republi can Primary election, as well as for the transaction of such other busi ness as might come up. After some suggestions a motion was car ried naming Saturday, May 12tb, 1894. A resolution was passed providing for a uniform ticket, that is, the printing of all the candidates' names on one ticket. The places for holding the prima ries were also named, which are much tbe same as heretofore, except that Campbell, Ritts & Co.'t, and filocb er's were dropped from tbe list. After the transaction of some other matters tbe committee adjourned to meet at tbe call of the chairman. The meeting was largely attended, eabh township being represented, and its deliberations were harmonious. El.K county in tbe Republican column 1 Preposterous I But that's the size of it just the same, for tbe first time in its history. It was Chairman Wright who con ceded Pennsylvania to tbe Republi cans by 20,000. The voters of the State obligingly tacked on the other 163,000. Grow's majority in tbe Stale, when they quit figuring, was 183,851. Tbe official returns from one or two coun ties were not in at last reports, but they will likely increase rather than diminish these figures. Tbe majority is big enough, however, and Mr. Grow's seat in Congiess will not like ly be contested. It used to be that Forest was the only Republican county in this (28th") Congressional district. Now, Clarion is the only Democratic cuuoty in it, the others having all rolled up ma jorities for the Republican ticket at tbe recent eleclion : Elk 147, Clear field 1132, Centre 504, while Clarion gave only 172 majority for Hancock Had there been a Congressman to elect at this lime tbe Republican nominee would have had 1,989 major ity, according to tbe returns. But wait till next fall. Tbe Effects are Far Reaching. At a meeting of tbe Pittsburg Coal Exchange a few days ago resolutions were adopted earnestly protesting against tbe meddling with tbe Bugar industry of Louisiana, as contem plated by the Wilson bill. One na turally wonders wby the coal men or any other Pittsburg industry should be interested in southern sugar en terprise, especially when so far re moved from this locality. But the reasons will be more fully compre bended when it is understood that Pittsburg coal operators ship annual ly to J.ew Orleans between 25,000,- 000 and 30,000,000 bushels of coal, by far the greater portion of which enters into sugar iudustry, and until the tar iff on sugar is definitely settled they cannot with any degree of cer tainty expect much from that section, aod they don't propose to ship their coal there with no prospect that there will be money to pay fjr it when -it arrives. And thus it is seen bow far reaching the sugar bounty or tariff becomes. And this is not all. Tbe coal shipped to these southern points it transported in flat boats and barges all of which are built on tbe Allegheny and its tributaries above Pittsburg. In fact we might say wholly within three counties Forest Clarion and Jefferson and with tbe coal iudustry crippled, the boat in dustry receives a corresponding set back, and this is already being felt in the low price which boats are now selling for, or the prospective price in the spring. And yet the Democrats tell us the Wilson bill must pass so that times will get better. More About the Tariff of '57. A correspondent writing to tbe Pittsburg Timet corrects some mis statements and erroneous ideas that have been floating aiound through Democratic papers of the State of late. He says : The .TW makes a savage attack on Congressman John Dalzell predicted on quotations from the free trade Philadelphia Record and James G. Blaiuc's "Twenty Years in Congress." The fads of history amply vindicate Mr Dalzell'a interview to which I he Record aod Pott take exception. It is true that Nathaniel P. Banks, wbo was kubsequenlly identified with the Republican party, was Speaker of tbe House of Representatives wbicb pass ed the tariff act of March 3, 1857. He was, however, a minority Speaker, having been elected on February 2, 1856, after a three months' struggle under an agreement by which the candidate having tbe highest vole should be declared elected. Tbe vote was Baoks 103, Aikeu 100, Fuller 6, Campbell 4, Weller 1 ; not voting, 20. Tbe house was composed of Demo crats, Whigs, Free Soilers, Ameri cans aod Republicans; neith er tbe House nor its com mittee was controlled by the last named party. In fact tbe party was hardly born, its first national conven tioo having beeu held on the 22d of February, 1856, in Lafayette Hall, Pittsburg, three weeks after Banks' election. Baoks himself was elected to Congress as a Democratic-free Soiler and native America". Tbe house was in fact controlled by the Democrats and tbe members of the other parties from the South and the representatives of the importing in terests of tbe Atlantic cities. Tbe Senate was strongly Democratic aod tbe President, Franklin Pierce, was of tbat faith aod was controlled by Jefferson Davis and his colleagues of tbe Cabinet, as Mr. Dalzell asserted. Tbe tariff bill was in truth as be says, an administration measure. Mr. Blaine in bis "Twenty Years in Congress," quoted by the Pod, says : The one excuse given for urging the passage of tbe act of 1857 was tbat under tbe tariff of 1846 tbe rev enues bad become excessive and the ncome of tbe government must be reduced. But it was soon found to be a most expensive mode of reaching that end." In six months after its passage the country had the panic of 1857, tbe effect of which continued till the breaking out of tbe war aod the pas sage of protective legislation. The revenues of tbe government fell off od its credit sack belcw par. The bad effects of the tariff of 1846 were not felt when the act of 1857 was passed. Tbey were felt most bitterly n 1847 and 1848 witb the result that the Whigs elected their President, Gen. Taylor, who died before any change could be attempted, and the discovery of gold which followed in 1849, and tbe Crimean war, gave tbe country a great temporary prosperity which received its quietus by the tar- ff of 1857. That act was opposed by all the Republican and Wbig members from Pennsylvania and was passed in the house by 124 to 71. Men like Seward, Morrill and Colfax bitterly opposed its passage and pre dicted tbe results which actually fol- oweJ. Mr. Dalzell is as usual right and the Post as usual wrong. Forest County's Official Tote. The following figures are taken from the official recoid of tbe vote polled at the election held Feb. 20, 1891, on tbe of fice of Congreas-at-Largo. While the vote iu light yet Forest county gives the largest majority for the Republican State ticket in it history : Congres-at-Large. DISTRICTS.
