Jan, 20, 1892, SruRGKON, the great Baptist preach er, died on Sunday night at Mentone His body will be taken to his home in I on Jon for burial. There is one of two things becoming more patent every day. David B. Hill will either nominate himself as the Democratic candidate for Presi dent, or will nominate someone to his taste, and it will not be Grover Cleve land either. With an eye on Senator Hill, the New York World says: "No nomina tion secured by sharp practice or ma "y! le manipulation can command the irty approval of a party founded 4 Democratic conceptions of free, popular action." Tbe notorious thief, and murderer of Detective Gilkicson, Frederick Carltou Filzsimmons, alias Ambrose G. Budd, alias Anderson, alias Jellick, alias A. B. Charles, who escaped from prison, at Pittsburg, on the nigbt of September 14, 1891, while awaiting trial for murder, was arrested shortly before 12 o'clock Sunday night at New Orleans. The war with Chili has been fought nd won, so to speak. Secretary olaine, by intsruction of the President, informed the Chilians that their apology is ample and satisfactory to the people of tbe United States, and that whatever reparation is found to be necessary 00 account of tbe Balti more affair can bs peaceably and hooorably adjusted. And so the war's net and everybody's happy. T a meeting in Philadelphia on the 29th inst, the Republican State Committee selected April 20th as tbe date for holding the State Convention at Harrisburg. Lieutenant Governor Louis A. Watres presided, and the meeting was well attended. A resolu tion commending President Harrison's ability in handling tbe Chilian dispute a unanimously passed, with another, iking Chairman Watres for his if vices in the last .campaign. No (tempt was made to choi.se Senator Juay's successor in the national com mittee. The proprietors of the Beaver Star, John H. Mellon and W. H. Porter, who were convicted of libel agaiost Seuator Quay, received their sentences 00 Monday of this wek. Both re ceived the same sentence, viz: Costs of prosecution, $600 fine each, and six months in jail. In concluding his remarks to the prisoners Judge Wick ham said: "Nearly two weeks have elapsed since your conviction, yet not one word of explanation or apology has appeared in your newspaper. Un der tbe circumstancss, to make the sentence unduly light would be to turn the proceedings heretofore had in this court into a mockery, and to ju dicially condemn and abrogate the law itself. For your sakes and, indeed, for my own, I am pained that you have left the Court without the shadow of a pretext for being largely merciful." ODD FELLOWS' RECEPTI0X. By far the largest delegation of Odd Fellows that ever visited Tionesta was that which partook of tbe hospitalities of Tionesta Lodge, No. 3G9, I. O. of O. F., last evening. Marienville aud Tylershurg Lodges were invited to come as a body, while other brothers in the surroundings were iudividually welcomed. The meeting at the Lodge room continued uutil about 11 o'clock, durmg which some ioitiatioos and degiee work were performed by 369's excellent team. Itie party then re paired to tbe Central House to enjoy a royal banquet arranged tor tbe occa sion. Covers were laid for upward of one huodred, aud had the weather been less inclement tbe number would have been doubled. There was an abundanoa of good things, Landlord Browoell fully sustaining his old time reputation for getting up good suppers. It was after the midnight hour ere the party broke up and the visitors sought their couches, aud there were none but pronounced tbe reception one uf the best they ever enjoyed. No. 369 is one of the strongest in the State, and financially no lodge is in better cir cumstance. When tbe boys start out fur a good time they don't do things by halves, but generally get there in fine shape. We should like to give a iliti at visitors from a distance, but '-Wda. SHERIFF'S SALE.
