A scarcity of dimes is noticed, and is attributed to the toy cartridge shaped bank which is now having a run all over the country. The little pocket bank is so shaped that only dimes can be inserted. Bo tenacious, also, is it of storehouse that it cannot be opened or its contents removed until fifty dimes, or $5, have been stored therein. Thousands of these little bank, are now doing duty. Dr. Cbas. H. Davis is fitting up a dental room in the addition to the Bar nett block, and is prepared to do all classes of work in bis line. Dr. Davis is elegantly equipped with latest and fioest instruments, and having gradu ated from the best instation in the land, is ready to guarantee to customer, en tire satisfaction. As he does not ex pect to remain here but two or three months, those ncediog hi. services should call early. Farmers and lumbermen should be very cautious in buHding fires in the woods aud clearing, these days, and when built they should be closely guarded. We understand the law to be in such case that notice to burn fallow must be given to adjoining owners or else the fallow-burner be come, liable for damage done. And decidedly any person who carelessly sets fires is liable both to fine and im prisonment. Tidioule News. Tho two large shingle mills be longing to Baker & Hammond, and located near Sheffield Junction, this county, were totally consumed by fire on Sunday of last week. Several dwelling house, were also licked up by the intense flames of the foreBt fire which raged furiously in that section, and in most cases the contents were also totally burned. People were obliged to run for their lives, not having time to snatch a particle of tlieir ho.,holn' electa, and there is in consequence some suffering among familiea f... irant of material to beuin housekeeping at-sin." The firm of Buker & Hammond is erection two - i new sbiugle mills at Brookston, one of which is already completed. Miss A. M. Starkweather, agent fur the Children's Home at Randolph, New York, is in town for a few days soliciting aid for the above named in stitution. Miss Starkweather was here a year ago on the same errand and not without some success. The Home is not a State institution, but is supported by private contributions. Tbe errand on which Mrs. Stark weather comes is rather a difficult one, but it should enlist sympathy, and more substantial aid when possible to give it. The lrniy is at the "Rural House, where those whom the may- fail to see in her canvass can find her. Tbe Home is non-sectarian, and while located in New York State opens its doors alike to the homeless little ones f Pennsylvania. All who are inter ested in and love little childreu should cive Miss Starkweather more than sympathy. V-The Blizzard says, the unique oil farm of Dr. C. J. Wbeo the minor details are completed, as they will be in a couple of weeks, the motive power will be supplied by elec tricity, and in the meantime it will not be open to inspection. Tbe mo live power in the trial made to-day was supplied by a peanut roaster, but the through train made close couneo tioos just the same. The large crowd attracted to the Pres byterian Church last Wednesday evening to attend the second in the series of Dem orest Medal contests were welt repaid as wag proven by the financial part of the program which ainountod by collection to 111.88. Eight persons strove for the prize, each wishing the other seven the greatest success next to the winner. Their names are Willie Hunter, Anna Anderson, Wil ie Bible, Kitty Joyco, Mary Ruinbor- ger, Hula Brace, Minnie Landers and Benjamin F. Davis; and of tho judgos Prof. R. D. Crawford of Tidioute, and Messrs. Geary and McSweenoy of Oil City. The battle was earnestly and pleasantly contested from the time tho candidates selected their declamations, and the' exhibition referred to would shame most of our older beads who are well satisfied with their own appearance on the rostrum. With one or two excep tions (and these showed great improve ment) tho exhibition of oratory was al most faultless and the aggregate score of 100 made up from five points, voice, memory, articulation, gesture and general effect, was well nigh reached. The se lections are taken from the pens and mouths of many of our greatest temper- anco writers and speakers, and we are sure, had the originators of these articles beon present, they would have concluded their productions had fallen into good hands. To say that the contestants did well, and tho influence one for good, Is a very mild statement of the overwhelming verdict of those who were so fortunate as to secure a seat. The relative merit was found not an easy matter to arrive at, but the honors finally rested upon No. 8 Willie Itiblo and tho presentation of a Silver Medal made in a few appropriate words from Prof. Crawford. Following this the ladies of tbe W. C. T. U., who have charge of these contests, presented, through Prof. Crawford, to Miss Minnie Landers the book by our American Pansy, "Four girls at Chautauqua," and to Ben F. Davis that by the English Pansy, "Briar aud Palm." Theso two have twice contostod for a medal and by the rules governing them are barred from farther participation. Musio interspersed tho program and received considerable ap plause particularly two coniio nialo quar tettes, "Excepting when I vote," and "Come oft" the fenco." The evening closod with thanks te tbe judges and others con tributing to its success, and congratula tions to the owner of tho medul. Give us more of them. NEWSY NOTES. On July 4th next, aud thereafter, the flag of the United States will contain forty four stars. Terms tJ.Ot) year. Address, Peterson's Magazine, 81X1 Chestnut St., Philadelphia. The Indiana (Pa.) Gazette sent a circular of inquiry to tbe commissioners of all counties iu the State except Alleglicny and Philadelphia, asking for information concerning methods of maintaining the Indigent poor. The purpose of tho letter was to ascertain the least expeuuive system of panper maintenance. The replies show that there are two systems In genoral use in the State, the "overseer" and the "county home" plans. The majority of the commissioners favor tho county home or almshouse system, as it seems to be the cheapest and most convenient way of taking care of tho poor. It is a mistake to bolieve that cold drinks are necessary to relieve thirst. Vory cold drinks, as a rule, increase the feverish condition of the mouth and stomach, and so create thirst. Experience shows it to be a fact that hot drinks relieve thirst and "cool off" the body when it Is In an ab normally heated condition hotter than ice- cold drinks. It is far better and safer to avoid tho free use of drinks below sixty degrees, in tact, a higher temperature Is to be preferred ; and those who are much troubled with thirst will do well to try the advantage to be derived from hot drinks, instead of cold fluids to which they have been accustomed. Hot drinks also have the advantage of aiding digestion, instead of causing debility of tho stomach and bowels. Ex. The bark season is now fairly opened throughout tho Pennsylvania hemlock belt, and there Is great activity In the forests tributary to the city. A well In formed lumberman says that this joar promises the largest peel of bark that has been known In mary a year. Tho stock at the tanneries, owing to a small product tho last season, is about exhausted. In fact bark men say they have nover known the reserve at the tanneries to run so low before. Last year tho peel was small, owing to tho stock of logs left In the woods from the open winter that had preceded. But now the logs are used up, the bark is gone, the tannery and lumber business Is good, and to supply both the saw mills and the tannerios will take lots of hemlock. Prices for bark are running close to fl above two years ago, although the tanner ies are not buying bs freely as might be anticipated. Prices for peeling aie better, and where men wore paid $1.25 and 11.40 two years ago, contracts are made at 91.60 and f 1.75 a cord now. A gilt edged poclor can take off two cords ol bark a day, making him at $1.75 the sum of $3.50 for his day's work. Men are in demand and will be scarce. Ex. Teachers' Examinations.
