George Wallace Delamater, caodi date for Governor, was born in Mead ille, Crawford couuty, March 31st, 1849. He was graduated from Alle gheny College ia bis native town in bis twentieth year, and afterward en tered the Harvard Law School. After having finished a thorough course in law he entered the office of L. II. Richmond & Sons, of Meadville, and ws shortly afterward admitted to practice at the bar. He spent about three years in active professional life, at the end of which period be engaged in Various business enterprises to Which he has since devoted his time and energy with reasonable success. He is a member of tbo banking house of Delamater & Co., of Meadville, a director of tbe Merchants' National Bank, president and owDer of a con trolling intere t in the Meadville and Lioesville railway company, president of tbe Meadville fuel gas compaoy, and actively connected with many other local enterprises. He has always been a staunch Republican, notive in promoting tbe interests of his party. He was mayor of Mead ville in 187b, senatorial delegate to the State convention in 1873, chair man of the Republican county com mittee in the campaigns of 1879 and 1879, and in 1880 he was one of the Garfield Presidential electors for Pennsylvania. He was elected to tbe Slate Senate in 1886. Senator Del a mater has proved Lis capacity for no litical leadership by his remarkable success in uniting the Republicans of tbe Northwestern part of the State in . one unfaltering phalanx for the sup pOTt of Republican candidates ia State campaigns in the past few years. Ilia leadership and management of party affairs in bis section of the State have been wise and discreet. His ability and executive capacity and his extra ordinary faculty for organization were recognised by Senator Quay, chairman of tbe Republican National Commit tee, who called him to bis side in tbe Presidential campaign of 1888, and it Las been universally acknowledged that the services rendered the Nation, al chairman by the Crawford county leader in New York and elsewhere contributed in a very material degree to the success of tbe Presidential cam paign. During his career in tbe State Senate, while be bas been modest aud always courteous, his practical kuonl edge of tbe needs of the people of the Stale, together with bis industry aud constant attention to his duties, com bined with marked force ot character and strong will, won for him tbe rcc- ' oguition of bis associates, and be easily became the acknowledged leader of that body. It ia aceordiugly not alone by reason of his educatiou, ex 5eriuncc, ability aud character estab ished in private life, but also because of bis valuable services to the Re pub lican party in its State and National campaigns, and bis successful career as u legislator that be is entitled to and commands recognition and honor among the people of bis nalivo Stalo. Louis Arthur Watres, the choice of tbe Republicans of Pennsylvauia for Lieuteuant Governor, since his elec tion to tbo Stato Senate, be Las beeu in tbe field as an active candidate for that ollk't). Senator Watres was boru at Ml. Vernon, Luckawanua couuty, April 21, 1861. He is one of the moat successful youDg men in business and politics in that section of the State. He started in life at the bot tom round of the ladder. He picked coal on the culm dumps of the authra- in a store, worked on a farm, weighed coal for the Delaware & Hudson Coal Company and filled the position of postmaster's clerk, deputy sherill' and teller and casbier in a bauk. He ttudiod law with John Haudy and was admitted to the bar in 1878. He has bieu Couuty Solicitor of Lackawuana, aod in 1882 became the Republican candidate for State Senator in the Twentieth district, which comprises in a large degree the mining portion of Lackawanna and Luzerue counties. Although the district is Democratic, Watres' personal popularity won biiu an election by a handsome majority. He was ro elected in JSS6 by an in creased majority. In 1887 he was ap pointed Inspector of Rifle Practice for the National Guard by Governor Beaver on account of the record for markmanship ir.ndo by Company A, of Scranton, of which be is captain. When ho took charge of the depart ment there were only 1.300 marksmen iu the National Guard. Under his supervision tho number has increoscd to 4.300. Sen. i tor Watres is largely interested iu business enterprises in his district, and lin a record at liar risburg as an earnest worker and an able legislator. THOMAS J. STEWART. Thomas J. Stewart, candidato for Secretary of Internal Affairs, was born near Belfast, Ireland, September 11th, 1848, and was brought to this country by bis parents early in 1849. Has resided in Norristown, Mout comcrvcouotv, since that time; was educated in tbe common schools of Norristown, and at tbe Quaker City Business College, in Philadelphia. At tho age of 16 years he entered the armv. serving as private in compaoy "C," One Hundred and Thirty-eighth regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, nnd was discharged therefrom June 23d, 1865. After his return home, be completed bis studies and entered into business life. Since 1870, he has been identified with tho manufacture of window glass, both as manufacturer and dealer. Siace 1882, has been As sistant Adjutant General of the De partment of Pennsylvania, Grand Army of the Republic, and was also appointed Assistant Adjutant General of the United States, in the same or ganization, for the years 1884 and 1885. Has been identified with the National Guard of Pennsylvania since I860, and has been adjutant of tbe Sixth regiment infantry since 1877. Served as a member of the House of Representatives from Montgomery couDty 1885 and 1886, and was the author of the net known as tho Soldiers' Burial Bill," which was passed over the Governor's veto.
