A number of young people from this county will attend school at Clarion, during the spring term of the Normal, which begins on April 1. We had a pleasant call Monday from Mr. Geo. W. Noblit, Pigeon's enterprising blacksmith and machinist, who was a witness at court this week. United Presbyterian services will be held in the school house on next Sabbath at 11 a. m., by P.ev. A. S. "We have met the enemy and they are ours," said Commodore Perry, thus telling the story of the battle of Lake Erie. And it is also a fact that Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup is no sooner Aed than the cold is conquered and the cough disappears. The new 2 cent postage stamps were put on sale in the principal cities last Saturday. They are not so large as the old ones, are of a deep carmine color, and contain the bust of Washington looking to the left. The new design is very handsome all round. Mr. R. Strucken, who has been a resident of Rochester, N. Y., since last summer, gave old friends in this vi cinity a visit during the past week. 'Doplb is doing well in his new home, we are pleased to state, and his per sonal appearance denotes that the climate up there agrees with him per fectly. Don't! If a dealer offers you a bottle of Salvation Oil without a wrapper or labels, or in a mutilated condition, don't touch it don't buy it at any price, there is something wrong it may be a dangerous or worthless counterfeit. Insist upon getting a perfect, unbroken, genuine package. We are obliged to ask the indul gence of our readers this week for the slim appearance of the Republican, which we know will be overlooked when we explain that serious ill ness in the family of the editor, and the sickness of part of the working force, is the cause. We hope to do better next week. TioDesta was honored this week by a visit from Major E. A. Montooth, of Pittsburg, one of Pennsylvania's prominent candidates for the Repub lican nomination for Governor. He met quite a number of our citizens up on whom he left a very favorable im pression, but being here on legal busi ness politics were not much discussed. Rafting began on the creek lust week in pretty good earnest, but was checked until to-day by the cold snap. The lumber thus far run to the mouth is from the Messrs. Lacy, Treasurer Ilagerty's job, aud from Salmon Creek. There will be about 5,000,000 feet of lumber, all told, that will be run by water from Nebraska, but this does not include all that is manufactured there, It being the intention of Collins & Watson, and Collins & Co. to ship about 3,000,000 of their product by rail. The lack of snow will be the cause of curtailing largely the nsual run of lumber from the Tionesta this season, and "rafting" -v ill npt by any means be what it formerly was. Last Thureday A. J. Small bad about as narrow an escape from drown ing as one generally gets. He had just passed over the dam at Nebraska with a raft, when, having his attention called elsewhere he carelessly got In reach of the oarstem, when the blade struck a swirl in the water, and quick as a flash Andy found himself landed in the swift current several feet from the raft. Making a desperate lunge he succeeded in getting his hands on tbo raft, but before he could get on top of it he was drawn part way under, and ooly his superior strength saved him from going entirely under. Andy thought his time had come, but he didn't neglect to make the best of the little chance left for him. Court came to a sudden stand still yesterday fornoon, when most of the cases on the calander were cither settled, continuod or discontinued. The Walton recognizance case was dis posed of by the Judge, upon motion of S. D. .Irwin, defendant's counsel, and with the consent of the District Attorney, by remitting all of the re cognizance above a sufficient amount to satisfy the costs in the case against E. S. Walton. The case of the Com monwealth against Charles Hall, on the charge of obstructing a publio road in Harmony township, known as the Siggins' Run road, was on trial Monday afternoon, S. D. Irwin ap pearing for the Commonwealth, and F. E. Bible for the defendant. Yes terday morning the jury returned a verdict of "not gilty," but defendant to pay half tho costs and the county the balance. The argument on the bridge matter at Nebraska was contin ued until next Argument Court, which will be held on the second Tuesday of March. C. M. Agnew, on motion of S. D. Irwin, was admitted as an at torney, having passed a very credible examination. Stewarts Run. Jas. Mclntyre has sold his team of grays to parlies of Oil City for (500; they were a fine team, and well sold. U. S. Zahniser has returned from Mercer county. Zuendel has lots of business these days getting wood to keep the drill bouncing on his farm. Last Friday afternoon the driller on well on the J. II. Zuendel farm, dis covered that the jars were broken, and so they had to shut down from that time until Monday morning. At this writing the well is down about 1400 feet, with some gas and lots of slate. There is still some laud here that is not taken, but if any one wants it now they will have to comedown with some of the ready "Joe Davis." East Hickory. Hickory is almost ready to bury; all it lacks now is a pick and shovel. We can find men that have lota of time to do it, and we have lots of mud without digging fur it; it lays up loose in the roads, so it is not hard to dig. The election turned out about as anticipated. Following is the vote on Constable: Lewis Whiltengot9 votes; George Patch, 10; Jim. Church, 35; W. A. Connelly, 89. Mrs. Tom. Conard is visiting father and mother Conard, of Beaver Valley. Dr. Weber was called to see his brother at Dempseytown, where he was lying very ill. Howard Lesher returned home from the Dashner farm with a couple of his ribs broken. He got caught by tho bull-wheel and was toesed to the girt. Smith Sutley left for the Dashner farm to work for John Knight. Henderson sent another fleet to President; there was about twenty-five or thirty thousand feet of rig stuff in it. Stogie. FROM ANOTHER CORRESPONDENT. We see by your last issue that your regular reporter from this place has stepped down and out, for which we are sorry, as we, that is most of us, appreciated his efforts to properly rep resent our town, in a greater degree than he is aware. However, our town must and shall be heard from, occa sionally at least, so long as we can get a piece of pencil big enough to make a mark with. It is taking cold the weather and some snow is falling at this writing, all of which our lumbermen ere de lighted to see. Mr. Henderson has only one-half of bis pine timber to the river, to Bay nothing of the hemlock which he would like to get to market. Wheeler & Dusenbury have only got the start made at drawing their lumber from their Warren county mill. Mr. Whitcomb has thus far brought in tho boss load, 5740 feet. Times at the Stowtown Mills are very lively. We notice from 4 to 6 car loads of lumber from there going to market every day. Our enterprising miller, H. W. Led ebur, is kept hustling, turning out from four to six tons of feed every day. Our sick are about as follows : Mr. and Mrs. Church are regaining their former health. Sed. Lynch is some better. Mrs. E. E. Zuendel, who has been very sick, is some better at pres ent writing. The family of Mr. War den are all sick with the prip. And Dr. Weber is kept very busy day and night. Observer. Brookston. Maud S.'8 record will be downed by Hoover's bay. The grippe and the measles are raging extensively. Lumbermen are wishing for snow and not having any puts them in a bad condition. The Forest Tanning Co. is again building an addition to its tannery. The sleighing party from Marien ville, stopped at the boarding house for dinner; then went to Sheffield, and in the evening returned and put up at the Forest House. They also took in the sights at the tannery, and by ap pearances enjoyed themselves im mensely. Come again. The oil field near Sheffield is much quieted by a few dry holes, neverthe less there are some very good wells constantly coming in, The well drilling at James City is the objective point at present and will reach the bottom this week some time, break-downs excepted. Mr. M. Black, the once obliging clerk for the F. T. Co., is now 'tending school at Valparaiso, Iod. Boys and girls, 'tend the Clarion Normal; you can do no better. Resolutions of Condolence. Adopted by the pnnils of Browne's School, on the dei.''i of our teacher, Miss Mary A. Hoover. Whereas, It has pleased God, in His all-wise and kind providence, to remove from our midst our beloved teacher, Miss Mary A. Hoover ; while we, her pupils, sincerely feel our owo loss, we extend to the bereaved father, brothers an I bisters our sympathy in their sad alHiction.
