Don't forget tbe concert at Tid- iout to-morrow evening. Notice change in ad. of Jobn V. Wackerman in thii iuue. Rob. Herman made a trip to Kansas Cily during the past week. Born -to Mr. and Mrs. II. C. Wetton, Tionesta, last night, a son. The weather of the past week has been "just too lovely for aoytbing." Are you going to the concert at Tidioute? seems to be the common salutation. Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Watson, Saturday, Oct. 15, 1887, a daughter. T. F. Ritchey Esq., was on Mon day admitted to practice at tbe Ve nango county bar. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Hart of South Oil Gity, visited with Tionesta friends over last Sabbath. G. W. Robinson has erected a commodious building near bis mill wherein to store dry lumber. Mrs. W. J. Roberts paid her daughter, Mrs. C. M. Cott of Mead- ville, a visit during the week. Mr. and Mrs. V. R Reck of Stratlanville, Clarion connty, paid a visit to Mr. Reek's mother during tbe week. Rig builders went up to Fox Creek, Green twp., last week to re build the rig which burned there re cently. Harvey Foreman ia putting np a building for Rowland Cobb on 'tother side of tbe river, to be used as a dry- house for staves. Tbe father of Mr. T. D. Collins died at bis home in Cortland, N. Y., on the 15th instant. He was upwards of eighty years of age. Tbe Tidioute concert will be well attended from this place, and those who fail to go will cheat themselves out of a rich musical treat. Messrs. Jas. T. Rose and Cyrus F. Hunt, of Jeoks township, are vis itors at the county seat to-day. Mr, Hunt was accompanied by bis wife. Mrs. Trent, nee Miss Sallie Dougherty, paid her sister, Mrs. L. Fulton, a two-weeks visit, returning to her home in Johnstown, Pa., to-day. The Grove City, Mercer county, Telephone, is out with a new bead which is quite unique, and sets off tbe appearance of tbe paper to excellent advantage. -An excellent quality of hoop- poles is being baoled through here and shipped at this station. Henry Glasener is taking them from his Ger man Hill farm. Tbos. Corab, one of our genial county auditors, wno has lor some time past resided on the Green farm, near Kellettville, hat moved back to Balltown, and talks of going into the mercantile business. Rails are being transported through town en route for Nebraska, where they will be made to do service in lengthening out tbe railroad np Little Coon, which is to be extending to tbe new lumber camp of Collins & Watson. Those expecting to attend the concert of the Schubert Quartette at Tidioute to-morrow evening should se cure their seats at once, as there are but few left, at Herman A giggins' store, lie mfl ruber the special train leaves here at 6:30 p. m. Tbe Franklin Evening New bas advanced the price of itself from one cent to two cents a copy. If its en terprising publishers bad made it tbree cents no sensible man would have growled, but at the present price the paper is dirt cheap when quality of the goods is considered. "For I am declined into the vale of years," she said a little sadly, "but indeed I doo t much mind it since can gel Fslvatioo Oil for 25 cents." We hope schools throughout the county will all remember to properly observe next Friday as Arbor Day. No pleasanter holiday could be given tbe scholars, the fruits of which most show to greater advantge as the years roll by. Friday, Saturday .and Sunday mornings of the past week early risers saw the ground, walks, fences, &c, covered heavily with frost, resembling a light fall of snow. Ice froze in ves sels nearly half an inch in thickness. It was tbe hardest freeze of the season. Mr. George Klinestiver accom panied bis dangbler, Miss Emma, to Cleveland last week, where she will remain a month nnder tbe care of the physician who performed an operation on one of her limbs about a year ago. The doctor says the young lady will entirely recover from ber injury. The Kent House at Lakewood, Chautauqua Lake, said to have been the finest hotel along the lake, was en tirely destroyed by fire on Monday of this week, caused by tbe explosion of a lamp. The loss is placed at 975,000, on which there was an insurance of 136,000. The property was owned by Mr. Ed. Sliney of Corry. We re-publish this week the pro gram for tbe Sunday School Conven tion, for tbe convenience of those in terested and who expect to attend. It is complete and can be used for refer ence by taking tbe paper with you to the meetings or clipping it out. The Convention assembles in tbe M. E. Church to morrow at 2 o'clock. Hunters find game very scarce and hard to get hereabouts. Never theless, George Bovard found a nice plump pheasant perched upon his grape arbor last Sabbath morning as be came out of the house. But we guess the bird knew George wan't a very good shot, anyway, and so bad no fears of roosting there for the night. The Oil City papers note the fact this moroing of the closing, by the Sheriff of Venango county, of the large hardware establishment of II. Tinker at that place, yesterday, up on executions issued by Dr. J. A. Ritchey and others. Tbe amount of the judgments is in the neighborhood of 140,000, of which Dr. Ritchey holds $30,000. There is considerable inquiry throughout Clarion county just now concerning fire escapes. The court bat instructed constables and grand jurors to return tbe owners of all buildings coming within the provisions of tbe law, that are not furnished with proper means of escape. In Clarion the three leading hotels and the Nor mal School buildings are subject to the povisions of the act of assembly. Clarion Jacktonian. Tbe large city weeklies are piling their circulars into the country papers this fall, as usual, with "immense' offers of clubbing arrangements. Ten months in the year tbe country pub lishers are jeered and laughed at by the city smarties. Tbe other two months they are surfeited and tired out with pleas to extend the circula tion of some other man's paper, gen erally at the expense of tbeir own. Tidioute Aewe. 1 bat s about tbe size of it. Tbe Wolcolt well was down near ly 1500 feet ou Monday of this week when the driller got a bit fast in the hole, having been running for several days without jars. About tbe lime this little set back was met with, there was a slight sbow of oil in the sand which had just been tapped, but not suffi cient to give that hope of a gusher which we bad sincerely wished for. Tbe well will likely be drilled several feet farther Into the saod as toon as tbe bit can be taken out. A large flock of wild pigeons were seen flying over the city yesterday moroing. Tbe beech woods of Forest County are laid to be alive with them Derrick. If the first part of the above item is no nearer correct than the latter then it ia evident that Oil City "lots got," as tbe Indian called it, is itn proving. A few weeks ago tbe Der nek reporter encountered a swarm o snakes on his way borne one night And from snakes to pigeons it cer tainly a change for tbe better. Alex. Hopkins is roughing it for a week or two up in the wilds of War ren Co., making headquarters with "Pard" MoCaslin and Marsh Goss, capacioas grip resembliog an artillery wagon, loaded with ammunition, bait, provisions, etc accompanied, and will no doubt be the cause of striking ter ror if nothing more to tbe heart of every species of game roamior the woods, of that part of the country, The Record has an advanced copy right on all be r stories, to be recount ed from tbe expedition, that is, pro vidiog they are not too bear. Pleat antville Record. Mr. George F. Watson of thi place, having purchased of James Haskell bis interest in tbe mill and 500 acres of timber on warrant 5207 Green township, consisting of one third, bas already gone to work pre paring the camp for active operations this winter. His partner is T. D. Col lint, and the new firm will be known at Collins A Watscn. Mr. Henry Parker hat moved to tbe camp and will continue to keep tbe boarding bonse for the firm. Besides the oak and hemlock on the tract they esti mate their pine at about eight millions. Don'tl If a dealer offers you a bottle of Dr. Bull's Cough Srup with out wrapper or labels, or in mutilated condition, don't touch it don't buy it at any price, there is something wrong it may be a dangerous and worth less counterfeit. Insist upon getting a perfect, unbroken, genuine package. King Mutt Hang. In the case of David L. King, con victed in Clarion county for the kill ing of James Davis, tbe supreme court on Monday banded down an opinion, in which the decision of tbe lower court is affirmed. Tbe court in the case ssys : "After listening to the able and learned ar guments of the counsel for the plain tiff in error and examining with close attention tbe assignment of error in this case, we fail to discover the slight est fault committed in the court be low, not one of the exceptions con taining anything that is novel, except perhaps, the 14th. They have all, in one shape or the other, been repeated ly before us, and at repeatedly over ruled. Tbe articles found upon tbe dead person and tbe opinions of the experts were properly admitted in ev idence, to also were King's threats and Mrs. Dinsmore't letter. Neither it the complaint that the oourt did not fully and properly iostruct the jury on the law of self-defense a just one, for tbe charge of the learned judge is full and complete on all points, and we do not know how a better one could bave been framed. It is true tbe quotation from the Commonwealth vs. Drumm, embraced by the four teenth assignment, might well bave been omitted, for it added nothing to what the learned judge said, but as it was made part of the charge and cer tainly did the defendant no harm, we may pass it as immaterial. Nor can we agree that the ingredients necessary to constitute murder in the first degree were wanting in the eviderce. Of course bad tbe jury believed the teeti mony on part of the defence, tbeir conclusion would have been different from what it was, but tbe creditability of tbe witnesses was a matter for them to pass upon and not for us or the court below. Iu the otber baod the evidence on tbe part of tbe Common wealth warranted that body in finding not only that tbe killing as willful and malicious, but also deliberate, Tbe otber exceptions are of no mo ment whatever and we therefore pass them without comment. "Judgment affirmed and it is order ed that tbe record be returned to tbe court below for execution." HERE AND THERE. Youths at Edinboro School are said to have the best teaching and the best in fluences. Tbe executors of the estate of the late Dr. Gibson, of Jamestown, Pa., find the assets to be f218,526.-it5. Thomas Nast, who has been missed from Harper's Weekly for some time, it is reported, Intends to start a pictorial paper at the beginning of the next Presi dential campaign, and that he will uphold the Republican nominee, whomsoever that may be. There is nothing of the the Mugwump about Mr. Nat. Six men were engaged in repairing the pier of the bridge at this place to-day and while crossing the river for their dinner the boat capsized. Two of them were drowned, two swam ashore and two were aaved by boats. Those drowned were brothers, Jack and Henry Nevill, of St. Petersburg. Bertha Oppenhetmer a young woman of twenty-four fainted in a theater in Phila delphia, last week, and was taken home insensible. The next day she died sud denly and at the ooroner's Inquest, it was testified that Bertha had thought her waist not shapely enough, and to reduce it, had laoed very tight. This brought on stop page of the heart and consequent death And yet women will continue lacing and at tbe same time wonder why men con tinue drinking. Blizzard. Constable Griffin returned on Saturday from a long and successful chase after a mau who was wanted. Tbe young man Bird P. King, ol Cranberry township, bad been charged with seductiou by Miss Hannah Ilsggerty, of Sandycreek town ship. By the time the warrant was in Orillln's hands he discovered that Bird had flown.
