There will be a meeting of the Re publican County Committee at the Prothonotary'a office on Tuesday eve ning next, Sept 21, at 7:30. o'clock. This will be a meeting of more than ordinary importance, and every mem ber of the Committee is earnestly re quested to be present. C. M. Shawkey, Chairman. The nomination of Hon. James T. MafTett by tbe Republicans of this Congressional district gives perfect satisfaction everywhere, and the pa pers in the several counties of the dis trict assure us that he will carry more than the solid Republican vote. In Forest county Mr. MafTett has many warm personal friends, and since his nomination we do not know of a soli tary Republican in the county who will not give him the heartiest support. From every source he gets tbe name of being one of the purest of men, with not the suspicion of a stain upon bis character. We could quote col umns of eoconiums from papers of bis political faith, but the two following paragraphs from the leading Demo cratic papers of Mr. MafTetl's own home will show what the people think of him irrespective of politics : We congratulate Mr. MafTett on his success and his party on getting so i.1 . 1' 1 . Ti . ti wormy a canuiaaie. ii it should so happen that a republican must repre sent this district in Congress, we pre fer one of his kind. Clarion Democrat. Mr. MafTett is an honest, capable and intelligent man, an able lawyer and a first-class citizen. Our only ob jection to him is his politics, and, while, personally, we wish him every success, we hope and expect to defeat him with an equally as good Demo crat. Clarion Jacksonian, Mr. Blaine puts it in a nut shell. Says he : "The palpable issue is wbeth er we will vote to sustain tho protect ive tariff now in force, or vote to re duce it, and put it in the direction of ultimate free trade." The Free Trade Boodle organs are to be heard from. ETOII6 MAINE IN LINE ! SPLENDID REPORT FROM BLAINE! 14,000 MAJORITY! THE FIRST GUN SOUNDS WELL. Maine held her state election on Monday last, and the result is a Bweepiog victory for the Republicans all over the state. The result ia best summed up ia Chairman Maoly's dispatch to the New York Tribune: The result of to day's election is a far larger republi can majority than was anticipated, the largest indeed, given in the state for the past 15 years, except in the presidential years. We expect seven or eight thousand plurality. The fig- uree at this hour, 11 o'clock, indicate a plurality lor liodwell ot not less than 12,000, and not improbable 14,- 000. We have carried every con gressional district, elected two-thirds to three-fourths of the legiclature, thus securing us the senate and county offices, probably in 14 of the 16 coun ties of the state. Let the good work go on ! Away out in Colorado William A. Wallace climbs to the mountain.-'top and surveys the situation in Pennsyl vania. Then he softly chuckles, ; Senator Wallace fa in Colorado. He no doubt realize; the fact that an attempt to elect the Democratic ticket this year is more than folly. T Tiie Mental Scientists are in session at Chicago. If one of the niout expert of the party will tell us the exact mental condition of William Uhler Hensel when he views the Democratic outlook in this State, he will greatly oblige many Wallace men, and at the same time anord amusement to tbe Republicans. "William," said Mr. Black to his chief fugleman, "have you hud your ear to tbe ground all alone listen ing?" "I have, sir," answered Mr. Hensel. "And there are no signs of Mr. Wallace cheering for the ticket?" "None, sir." "Then, William, I guess you can put up the shutters. I will not be needed in Harrisburg after January next," and Mr. Black sat him down on the bank of the Codorus and gazed sadly at the placid stream. Quiet reigns again in the districts affected by the recent earthquakes, The people of Charleston are recuper ating as best they can from their aw ful experience. Reports now state that the destruction and ruin wrought has been greater than at first report ed, and it is somewhat doubtful wheth er or not the city will ever be rebuilt, the people being in mortal dread lest a similar calamity may overtake them at any moment. Aid from every quarter is being poured in upon them; and yet too much cannot be done. List of Patents. List of Patents granted by the U. 8.
