Last Summer we had a rafting flood every month from July to November, and some times two. Sufficient funds havo been raised to guarantee to Clarion a $40,000 Stato Normal School, aud doubtlest before another year the school will be in suc cessful operation. The earnings of the Buffalo, New York & Philadelphia railroad for the second week in August were $59,700, an iucrease of $8,600 over the same period of last year. The first match hunt of this sea son will come off next Saturday, and all who bave a notion to take it in wjfl please meet at this office to-mor row (ihursdayj evening, or leave word to that effect. The next thine: in order is to pay your State and County tax iu order to secure your vote. This is imperative, 'cause no man can vote who has not paid said tax at least 30 days before election. Assessor Canfield will be at the Court House to-day and to-morrow for the purpose of placing on the registry list all names of those who expect to be voters here at the coming election. The assessors in the several townships will also be at the polling places in their respective precincts for tho same purpose and we hope Republicans wil see to the matter, as to.-morrow is the last day. Republicans should not neglect the important matter of geliiog regis tered. Every voter must be registered at least CO days before the election, and Sept. 2d is the last day. Don't neglect. Mr. A. Frank Reck started for Erie yes terday for the purpose of purchasing a new saw mill, which he intends set ting up on a tract of land near Mar ienville, in Jenks township, and wil manufacture pine lumber for Messrs Horton, Creary & Co. The mill wil have a capacity of about 30,000 feet daily. Capt. W. C. Kress, of Lock Ha ven, Pa., attorney for A. Pardee & Son, the purchasers of T. D. Collins extensive lumbering plant in Green township, has been here off and ou for the past two weeks assisting in the execution of the title papers. The Captain is one of those whole-hearted jovial ge&tlemen whom it is a roa pleasure to meet. The borough schools open for the eight months' term on Monday next Mr. C. H. The Conferees of (his, 25th, Con gressional District, convened i.i Fox- burg, Pa., on Monday afternoon, but p to this, Wednesday, morning had not succeeded in nominating a candi- ate. Yesterday evening fifty-five allots had been taken, and we sup poso they will resume work to-day, nd doubtless succeei in making a hoice. Quite a number of others went down from here to see the fun. The new design for the oleomar- gariuo tax stamps, that of "a bull trampling a serpent under foot in the centre," is hardly true to nature. We suppose the idea of the serpent is to represent tho manufacture of oleomar garine being crushed to death by the national bull. But the law makers should be informed that butter is not made from bulls, so the proper thing to have put on tho stamp would have been a cow. Blizzard. In its monthly oil report for August the Blizzard has this to say of the situation in Forest County: "The Cooper district remains inactive while Balltown shows but three wells drill ing for tho last of the mouth and no new'rigs starting. James Welsh' last well, one mile in advance of develop ments, is shut down while the owner preserves a dignified silence that augurs of dry results. I. A. Whitney, of Pittsfield, the Postmaster at that place, was in town Monday and gave information before U. S. Commissioner, Col. James O Parmlee, to the effect that he had identified some of the stuff found on the person of Reynolds, now in jail a Tionesta, as having come from his store. This proves that Horrigan who was the partner of Reynolds, is quite as guilty of robbing the mail and will be prosecuted by Uncle Sam It is thought his capture will be too easy now there is some one having au thority to act in the matter. Warren Mail. The Erie Annual Con ference the M. L. Church will convene at Brookville on the 0th inst., and wil be the third session of that body held in Brookville. It met there in 1869 aud was presided over by Bishop Simpson, and in 1873 when Gilbert Haven was the presiding Bishop. This year Bishop Baker will preside. Since the last session held thore all that par tion of the territory lying in Ohio was stricken off and, with the exception of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties in the State of New York, the Confer ence is composed exclusively of a por tion of Western Pennsylvania. Roupe held services at Minuter school house Sunday after noon. Rev. Roupe spent his boyhood days on Tionesta Creek, and always meets with a cordial welcome whenev er he comes this way. The child had been ill for few days of cholera infantum, and died Aug. 22d. The out door meetings now being held by the M. E. Church on Whig Hill, are drawing large crowds. The meetings will last two weeks and the paBtor, F. M. Small, will be assisted by Elder Bray and other ministers who will stop on their way to Confer ence. Mike Criswell, of Bobs Creek, who is well known in the County, had the honor to catch the 2 headed snake mentioned in the Vindicator. An Ordinance authorizing any Natural Gas Company accepting its terms, to lay mains and pipes in and through the streets, fcc, of the Borough of Tionesta, for the purpose of transporting, distrib uting and supplying natural gas. lie it Ordained ami enacted by the Town Council of the Borough of Tionesta, and it is hereby ordained and enacted by au thority of 'same. Sec. 1. Said additional lamps to be located as the Borouch authorities may direct. Provided, That the said Borough shall make all connections at its own cost and expense; And provided further, Thak when two or more companies shall intro duce gas into this Borough, each company shall furnish an equivalent amount of gas for Biich purposes as the Borough author ities may direct, on tho sumo torms aa famished by first company.
