Baldwin's Official Railway Guide, which grows so Rteadily iu popular fa vor, is it-sued for October. Its time tables are always authentic and can be relied upoo. The sports of Braceville hnve ar ranged for a grand hunt to take place to-day, Weduesday. Squirrels are said to he abundant in that (section, and doubtless many will be slaughtered, Mrs. Jennie Purse, of Alton, Mc Kean County, Pa., was entertained by her friend, M's. J. L. Tho fact that corn husks stick tight to the ears; that tho little grouud squirrels work uutil lute in the even ing laying up their store, and the large crop of new marriages during the sea son, all presage a hard winter. Republicans, now is the time to put iu your best licks for the whole ticket. Stir up your apathetic neigh bor, if you have one, and let us roll up an ohl fashioned majority for our Republican ticket, which is by far the best in the field. The Buffalo, Pittsburgh & West ern Railroad have filed a bill in equi ty for possession of I he track now used by the New York, Pennsylvania & Ohio, between Oil City and Frauklin, which track and right ot way tho for mer company claims to own. The jail birds were so enthused on Tuesday that they illuminated their offices. Clarion Democrat. The fun ny part of the Democrat's item lies in the fuct that on that evening the Dem ocrats had a big meeting in Clarion, and it's no wonder the jail birds en thused. . A quick and effectual method to destroy plantain and other weed pests on laws, is to cut the plaut off at the crown and drop on the top of tha root two or three drops of kerosene. The lawn will not be defaced by digging, and the work is at once and complete ly done. Last week in clipping a political item from one of the Brookville pa pers, upon which we made aomo com ments, we credited the item to the Re publican when it ehoulJhave been the Democrat. The error was detected af ter part of our editiou was worked off and corrected. Rev. Riley, formerly of East Brady, Pa., recently located at Brace ville, this county, where he has a nice dwelling in course of erection. The reverend gentleman is a warm friend of ex-Sheriff Brace, who bas given him charge of the lumber yard at that place. He is a staunch Republican, and makes friends wherever ho goes. Will. Klinestiver, who has for several years acted as foreman of the Republican, has gone the way of nearly all the world, that is, gone aud got married. The bride is Miss Flora L. Weary, who baa for several months past been a resident of Tionesta, where she gave instructions in instrumental music. "Billy" is a line young man, and has an excellent young lady to to match him, and the both have our best wishes for a long life, full of pros perity aud happiness. Croup, it is said, can bo cured in one minute, and the remedy is simply allom nnJ sugar. The way to accom plish the deed is to take a knife or a grater, and shave off in small parti cles about a teaspoouful of alum ; then mix il with twice that amount of su gar, to make it palatable, and admin- inter it as quickly as possible. Alniost instantaneous relief will follow. Ex. William Nugent, an old resideut of Jenks township, this county, and well known to many of our citizens, died ou Thursday last, 19th iust. He was nearly G8 years of age aud lived a bachelor life, his niece keeping house for him of late years. To her he will ed all his personal effects, we under Rtrud. He was a brother oflhomas Nugent, who survives him, and is yet quite active, mentally. From a letter written to a Jenks township friend, and which we were allowed to peruse, we are glad to learn that our old friend Thomas Porter, who now resides in Nebraska, is suc ceeding admirably in bis new home. Tbe climate ho says is very salubrious and well adapted to farming. His Cora crop was excellent, and he put up eighty tons of hay this season; the potato crop was a large one, and al though they had had no rain for more than sixty days. tho crops were in no way affected thereby. Mr. Porter's many old friends will be pleased to learn of his success. The Wilksbarre Union-Leader ex posed one of the leading swiudling dodges played upon the farmers in the eastern part of the state : Sharp No. 1 goes to a farmer and makes him an offer for his farm at a high figure, which is usually accepted, and $50 or so deposited to bind the ' bargain. Then Mr. Sharp's friend comes along aud offers $1,000 or more in advance of the Cut price. Then the farmer goes to No. 1, and by paying a good round sum, say $500, secures a release. Tbe enterprising fellow that wanted the land so badly at the highest figure neglects to come around, and the farm er is about $-150 out, which of course, is divided by tbe sharps." An important business change took place iu our town during the past week; Mr. Henry Ileber, who bas for the past six months been conducting tbe hardware btore in the Eiostelu builuing has disposed of his entire stock to Mr. Ed. Heibel, who will hereafter conduct the business at bis stand opposite the Lawrence House. Whilo we Bhould have been pleased to have had Mr. Ileber remaiu with us, yet the cherry seems to have been too small for two bites, nf it were, hence this change. Mr. Heibel will do well with his now camplete stock, out of which he can furnish anything in the lino of hardware at a very reasonable price, and we bespeak for him a large patronage. Mr. Ileber made mauy friends during his short stay in Tiones ta, who will wish him prosperity in his future undertakings. Aud still the mania rages. Last Saturday our very efficient and wide awake County Superintendent, J. E. Hillard, was taken with the complaint, and in company with one of Tiouesta's finest young ladies, Miss May Shaw key, daughter of Prothonotary Shaw key, drove to Pleasantvile and engaged the parson, who ministered to their wants in elegant style at tbe residence of one of Mr. ll.'s intimate lriends. The Professor's friends in Forest coun ty are legion, and all of them will re joice to congratulate him upon this most sensible step. Tho fact is he never really does anything but what there is sense in, yet this seems to us the most sensible of all. Tbe happy young bride's many friends will also wish her joy and contsntraent in her new sphere of lifa. Here's our right hand, Professor, and Iwhen thy locks are silver grey ni iy you still be happy in the love and companionship of your now young wife, is the sincere wish of your friend, the editor. Our school has closed and the teach er has gone home to commence anoth or term for the winter. The Mt. Our martial band is reorganizing; some of the boys have sent for several new nickle-plated drums, and we dare say their musio will be hard to beat. Lots of fellows can have a girl apiece, but they are scarce who can have two or three and travel in peace. Don't it Billy ? Mr. and Mrs. Baily of Franklin, Pa., have been the guests of Mr. Thomas Pownell's and friends. Miss Jennie M. lloguc, of Centre ville, Pa., will teach the Little Hick ory school this wiuter. Mr. Elias Albaugh is death on coons, lie invented some ingenious way of trapping and has succeeded in captur ing five or six in a few days. Mr. Robert Stanford is staying with his daughter, Mrs. Elia3 Aibaugh, at present. He is undoubtedly the old est "Pennymite" in this county. He was born in Armstrong' couuty in 1793. He is the father of fourteen children, of whom eight are nov liv ing ; has sixty-five grand-children, and 50 great-grand-children. He had one son in the Mexican war and three in the late rebellion. He looks as young and hearty and is as active as most men of seventy, and can walk several miles apparently wit'i great ease. Mr. Jonathan Albaugb fell heir t tho "arm cbair." He says he wont do anything this winter but sit by the stove and toast his shins. October 23, 1882. Louis. Forest Oil Notes. Forest county seems to be playing the most important part iu oil circles to-duy, and the attention of operators and oil men generally seems directed iu this course on account of the nu merous "wild-cats" that are going down at present. Wolcott & Co., at their Peters Run well, are still thumping away at a depth of 1600 feet or more. Tbe Derrick of Monday gives the following news concerning Forest couu ty developments, which is doubtless correct : FOREST COUNTY WILDCATS. Forest county is tli9 paradise of tho wildcat operator at present. Il is the ouly place where he ha-t reasonable chances of striking a pool. Being lo cated between Clarion and Venango on the south, southeast and west, War ren county ou the north, and McKean county n the northeast, the operator necessarily presumes 6omethiug will be found iu its borders. Numerous wells have been drilled in tho county with no good results further than one well at Bull town aud another on the Cooper tract ou the southwest exten sion of the Sheffield belt. All other ventures have proven failure. Dry holes have been drilled abouc Marien ville, along the Clariou county line, between Balltown and Hickory, and along the river. There still remain wide areas which have not been touch ed by the drill, and where the de sired new field may be optned. From the amount of wildcat wells which have beeu drilled, it cannot be ex pected that a large field will be dis covered, 8uch as that of McKean, Al legany or Butler. At best nothing but pools, or narrow belts, or spots like those of Bullion, Byrotn Centre, Cherry Grove or Clarendon can be looked for. The wildcat wells now be ing drilled will either discourage the wildcat operator from further efforts uutil wiuter has passed, or opea up what the trade has been expecting for the pact twelve years, a Foiest county field. The Balltown Oil Company's well on warrant 4821, north of the Ball town development?, was cased last week. It is located to test the sup posed connection between theGrandin well aud the Cherry Grove district. Hancock v& Kennedv's well ou warrant 5,213, is expected to reach the saud level next Weduesday. The owners of this well live at Kane, and one of theai was home last, week. The next day the holders of oil in that vi cinity came iu and sold their balances, which lead those who kuew of the cir cumstances to infer that the Kane pro ducers had obtained a "pointer." It is situated six miles southwest of the Kelly & Grandin well at Balltown, and 'east of the Grace & Co.'s failure on 5,211. On tha Berlin fafm, near the Hancock & Kennedy well, Mo Keown Bros., Knott & Co., are drill ing. The Tionesta Oil Company has reached a depth of about 1,000 feet on warrant 5,211. Neely & Smulleo are drilling a wildcat well somewhere in Forest county, but its precise location is not known. The only indication that they are drilling, is that a cable went over the narrow gauge road from Foxburg, Clarion county, to thiB firm, three weeks ago. Its destination was not discovered There are more drilling in the vicini ty of the Shannon well on tho Cooper tract, ami tbe Blue Jay district than elsewhere. On warrant 3193, Murphy & Co. have not yet cased, and on the same warrant Grace & Co. have a rig up. This adjoins the Cooper tract ou the west. Shultz & Co. are cpud- ding on division 7, of the Cooper tract. On the Fox farm, Shultz & Co. have reached a depth of 1,600. Ash & Co. are drilling on the Stewart lot at a depth of 900 feet. Anchor Oil Company's well, division C, Coop er tract, will reach the saud in tbe early part of the present week. I Will Pay Cash for Cross-Ties, Chestnut or Oak, any where on the lino of the Buffalo, Pitts burgh & Western Railway. Oct. 25, '82. tf T. B. Cobb. Walnut Leaf Hair Restorer.
