There is now some prospect that Dermis Kearney will become a work ingman in fact as well as in nam. He will work for the State. The Police Judge of San Fraucieco, on Tuesday, sentenced Dennis Kearney to six months' imprisonment in the house of correction aud to a fine of one thousand dollars, for using profane and threatening language in hit Sand Lot speeches. There is no man i this country who is belter entitled to the inside of a prison than Kearney. He is au unmitigated blackgaurd and a leader of the worst elements that ever infested any civilized community. Venango Spectator. m "STATE CAPITALISMS." IIariiisrurg, Pa., March 20, '80. The Board of Pardous met on Tues day last, and ater hearing over .fifty coses and t: ran tine less than a half dozen pardons, adjourned until the 27lh int., when they will reconvene to act on the casts of the Bribery Con victs. Two of the watchmen on the "hill" were to day air sttd forstaaliu st'Jte reports, &c, and selling them for old pappr. For some time past it has beea impossible to obtain Agricultural reports, and as there were a lare number printed uud very few sent nway it occurred to au employee of of one of the departments to "look the thing up." The State Library had been robbed of a large number ofthese reports, together with a lot of postage stamps and postal cards, and the Li brarian had p aced the matter into the hands ot a detective, who, together with the employee before meutioned, traced five bags of the reports to a junk deuler who had buiight them for old paper, at the rate of two cents a pound, books that bad cunt tho state three dollars apiece. Several thousand were also found in a neighboring paper mill. The cose is in the hands of the District Attorney, who expects to make further developments and send the thieves where they belong We've had more snow and rain this week, which, consequently, has not improved the condition of the streets. Last Thursday some boys made u rniniture ship about five feet long, fully equipped with sails, and placed it in the middle of Third Street. Oo its side it bore the following: "Couu cilmen's excursion through Venice." You can imagiue the depth of mud and water when I toll you that appli cation has been made for a charter fur a trry company to navigate the two principal streets. And thin is our Ktate Capital. Republican: Thinking Tionesta might lose sight of me should I keep silent I concluded to let you know at leant where I was, how I came, aud what the surroundings ate here : In company with Mr. Thou. Snod grass, of President, and weversl others from Pennsylvania. We Id ft Oi City for North Platte. Neb., on March 8. When we arrived at Omaha the weather was quito cold, C below zero, and spveral inches of snow; beyond the Missouri river, when we came to the North Platte river the weather was pleasant, and we could fee thousands of wild geese flying, farmers plowing, sowing wheat, and some even husking corn. Arrived at North Platte on March 11, at 2 a. in., in iho morning. The air was dry, roads were very nice, and a team at the depot took us six miles out in the country. But then in a (iay or so we had quite a snow storm. North Platte is a thriving towu of 2000 inhabitants, situated at thejunc tioti of the North and South Platto rivers. The land in-this section is more particularly adapted to stock raising than farming, and this forms the principal business of the inhabit ants of the town. The gamp here is principally deei, elk, buLhilo, antelope, and various other small game, such a( wolves, wildcats, jack-rabhits, prairie chi kens, grouse, Ac, Ac. There is considerable government land to be taken up near this town yet, but set tiers are fast coming in. I am going over into Kansas in a few weeks, and perhaps will write again it I see anything new. Yours truly, Justis Shawkey. Wftl. SMEARBAUGH & CO., ACOJIC ISlEI,IXn, (ono door from O. W. Bovnrd's.)
