Whilst strolling leisurely one eve ning around the hay of Naples, Ietween the towns of Sorrento and Castelamare, I was so taken up with the surroundings I did not notice the approach of darkness. Night overtook rue several miles from my intended destination. Once while looking around ma I caught a glimpse of a faint light n the mountain side. Some one must live there I thought. I had always had a great desire to spend a night in an Italian hut to get a belter idea of their true home life. A put!) led away from the mad which was evidently the one leading to the but A moment later I was wendicg my may up the 'mount aiu decided, at least, upon a visit. Scarcely had I got where I could Bee that the rays came through a little window than strains of music as sweet as the perfumes of a tropical garden, came floating to me ou the evening zephyrs. I hastened on with delight and booiv reached the front door it proved to he the back and side door as well. I tapped gently. No answer the music deadened the sound. I knocked a second time much louder. A voice answered in Italian, I presume it meaut come InTat any rate in I went." "Good evfcuiug," I said in their own tongue. An old but pleasant looking man, apparently about Rixty years of age, clad in a pair of coarse linen pantaloons, a colored shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbow, the collar thrown open, looked at me with surprise as he lowered his violen from his shoulder, and in a pleasant voice answered : "Good evening sir." He proceeded to make further remarks, but by certain gestures I gave him to understand . I could not speak his language. I took a profiered rustic stool,, and began to survey my sur roundings. Just opposito me sat a pretty, black haired and dark eyed girl over whoso head not more than twenty summers hid passed, and who up to this lime had remained silent. I nodded a good evening which she returned with a smile so sweet as to epen up a channel in my heart that had long been closed, ncr features were dark and finely moulded, her month small ar.d when bhe laughed disclosed a set of pearly whito teeth ; her eyes seemed to ph-rco my inmost recesses with a fact nut in indescriba ble; her hair hung iu natural curl over her naked shoulders; her dress was of a style common to the peasant girls of Southern Italy. It was low iu the neck exceedingly so and the tdclrt scarcely reached below the knees, I don't know why they wear them so ; it may be for couveuiencc sake, or it may be for the pake of economy, I don't know. I nover inquired. She wore a pair of dark stockings and slippers with wooden s des. To the right of her sa, half a s!ep, a domes tic looking young lad three or four years her junior, and obviously her brother. The room and furuilure bore the appearance of cleanliness, a rarity iu Italy. Id one corner sat a bed neatly spread with clean liucn. A little table stood iu another corner, and an arm chair besides the four stools we occupied was the only furni tr.re visible. I motioned to tho old i : - :t t i i jji v us siiiiie musie, and h MiuiU'diaudy started out on an ur 'fir a well Lo iwu Italian opera. It -a i-nchuMibg. Without stopping to reH he changed to a beautiful waltz, 1 am too goo l a walter lo rei-t such a temptation. I crossed the room and offered tho young lady my arm; the next moment wo were whirling 'round the room. If I misled, a step occa sionally, I seldom missed foot, for I awkwardly trod on hers half the time. I was growing dizzy as the old gentle man changed to a jig. She drew herself from, me and seemingly as fresh as ever started on the jig. I did not caro to dance, but I wanted to do my duty as an American. I started too. The old gentleman nodded to the boy who by this time was wide awake, and ho took from a 6helf a piccalo and joined in with enthu siasm. I was by this time growing extremely tired, but determined not to be out done. The dust which had lain dormant in the cracks perhaps for years, began to rise. I looked at the old roan to see if he had any not ion of stopping, but his eyes were cast down, and his arm was moving with the reg ularity of a watch tick only ten times faster. I turned to my partner who was springing into the air a foot and one half every jump. I knew I could not stand it much longer. The music grew faster, and faster. I kept tip. I ventured again to look at the old man when lo! the music wis audible but the bow invisible. I knew tor. well the cause. J was swooning, and stag gering reluctantly towards the corner I threw myself half involun tarily into the arm chair. What happened the next few minutes I know not. Were it possible, I would still think to-day tho house spun around like a top. Later I was shown to bed upstairs wliiek. we reached hy climbing up on pins d.iven into the logs. The following morning was one such as only Italy ran boast of, and after a hearty breakfast of corn cakes and macaroni I hid good bye forever. ANNOUNCEMENT w.
