From our way of thinking this 13 a pretty good stroke of business. o The Titusville Greenbackers, not satisfied with viewing from afar the criminal foolishness of their party leaders in Maine, hate proven them selves fools by passing an extraordin nry long preamble and numerous res olutioosendorsing'Sinith.Greenbacker, a? Governor of Maine. Venango Citi zen. Letter from Kansas. concluded. Atchison, Kax., Jan. 18, 1880. Wo wHl now go out along the Cen tral Branch of the Union Pacific Iv. K., which terminates at a place called Kirwin, which is 247 miles from Atch iaoD. There are about 40 little towns along this road which have all been built within 3 years, nnd such fanning country you never saw. As far as the eye can reach you an see nothing "ut corn. The only thing I don't like about this country ia the scarcity of timber, only growing along the streams which aro quilo numerous. Button wood a.nd cotton wood are about all the kinds of timber that seems to grow well here. We have some very strong winds here, and a great many of the people live in "dugouts" or "caves" for fear of the winds that blow across the prairies. We have seen the wiud so strong that it would stop a freight train, and hold it. It looks like nn impossibility, but u is as true as gos pel ; only two years ago the wind entirely destroyed the town of Irvine; blew every bouse in town to pieces, and blew an iron bridge off its piers; aud such rains as we have ; it seems as if it came down in solid sheets. Game seems to be very plenty hero, such ns jack rabbits, prairie- chickens, antelope, wolves and lots of other kinds. We have no deer nor bear, but we have lots of wild geese and ducks. We are going to send you, in a few days, a watch chain made from what is known as the "Missouri tree pea;" we will 8eud a discription of the pea when we 6end the shaio. There are a great many paw-paws here ; they resemble a banana in looks but not in taste, they are "richer." The water in this country is all lard, and the only kind of stouo they have hero is limestone. There are 3 kinds, blue, white and magnesia ; the latter is as soft as chalk and is used for building purposes, as they can ohape tbem with an ax or hatchet. I would say to those emigrating to this country to either come in the fall or winter, as the summer or spring time is very unhealthy, and nearly every person that cornea in the spring or summer has a spell of sickness. There has been no Know here this winter since Thanksgiving, and then it snowed just enough to cover the grouud, and left the same day it fell. The weather here at present is as warm as summer; the dust U flying in the streets and there is no frost in the ground at all. This country sports some of the finest hoises and mules we have ever seen. There are no water works here, and all the water is got by digging well?, and rain water is caught in the cisterns, but it gets bard as soon as it gels in the cisterns, which are mostly holes dug in the ground and plastered with cement. We have but oue fire engine in this place. Well, I guess we have written enough for tbo pres ent. Will write you again soon. From your old-time friends and tramps. II clings & Shoemaker.
