FOR SUPREME JUDGE, 1ION. JAMES P. STERRETT, PF ALLEGHENY COUNTY. FOR SECY INTERNAL AFFAIRS, AARON K. DUNKEL, OF PHILADELPHIA. REPUBLICAN COUNTY TICKET. FOR CONGRESS, HARRY WHITE. Subject to decision of District Conference. FOR ASSEMBLY, N. P. WHEELER. FOR PROTIIONOTaRY, Ac, JUST1S SHAW KEY. FOR SHERIFF, C. A. RANDALL. FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, H. W. LEDEBUR, JOHN II . WHITE. FOR COUNTY AUDITORS, N. THOMPSON, D. F. COPELAND. FOR JURY COMMISSIONER, C. II. CHURCH. The Effect of More Greenbacks. The Hon. John Sherman took charge of the Treasury Department at a per lod of great commercial and industial repression that has continued to the present time, and the severity of which has been in proportion to the specula tion, extravagance, waste, and debt in cident to an overissue of paper money To carry on the huge opetations of the war a larger amount of paper money became necessary than the us ual business of the country required. As was foreseen and predicted in 1861, this paper depreciated in value, and the depreciation was shown in the rise of prices of all commodities goods, lands, rents, end wages. Relatively these things were worth no more than : efore, but seemingly they were; and ;.s the prices advanced, people felt they were growing rich. In fact, they ere growing poor. The money issued .) conduct the war was used to buy aterial, which the war destroyed Lia to pay soldiers, whose time ana crgies added nothing to the wealth : the country; conseqently the money i to Carry on the war represented - nen tne war was over, the loss in eduction which the war had created ney, instead of being the evidence wealth, as gold is, was the evidence ebt, and represented loss instead ain, as money ordinarily is sup d to. Hi firBt effect of the suspension of cic payment was the depreciation paper, or, as it appeared, a riso in - i-cs. As prices continued to rise, it k more to transact the business of - country, and this necessitated fur issues from time to time to meet , J and ; and as each issue caused reused depreciation, the process of 'ation went on oontinually, and so Sts rapidly augmented, undar the '-e of riches. It was a fascinating sion, which has ended in disappoint ;t and disaster. It was a fiction the nature of things could not iaue. We must, in the long run on realities, and voting to keep La delusion by keeping up the in n which caused the delusion does answer. The expansion of the 2 tency tended to an explosion al 3 time, and the explosion could not ' o avoided. As the day of reckoning iftie round to one and then another, signs of uusoundnesi were dis 1, and failures and panic ensued, use there came a clamor for nl the insolvents all said if ! only get accommodation : f ii, if they could keep on borrowing they need not fail. The difficulty was that they could not longer borrow. Debt beyond ability to pay had absorbed' their substance, and nit being ablo to put up iccurity, their own notes would not bring the money. The bubble being tlown to the last degree of tension, at length bursted, and the enormous amount of indebtedness to be liquidated made nard times. To return to specie payment is there- foroonly another name for getting back from delusion to reality. We can nojonger force our books and make eighty cents pass for one dollar. We can no longer imagine that we have $1,000, when in truth there are but $800 in our vaults. a For visitors to the country, from city and village, a useful and pleasing vade-mecum is the American Agricul tural for August 1st, with its half a hundred engravings of rural objects, implements, conveniences, plants, etc., while cultivators in all departments will find much of interest and practi cal utility to fill up their resting hour3 with initructivo reading.
