Wo aro requested to nnmnincp the name of NICHOLAS THOMPSON, of Tionesta township, as n candidal fur County Trea surer, subject to Republican usage.. Mr. Thompson was a soldier in the Into war, and lost an arm at tlio lmttlo of (jet ty hurg. Co Committee Meeting. The IVpalilican County Comiuittco met, pursuant to notice, in tlia Arbi tration Room of the Court House last Ycniijr. W. E. Latliy, Esq. was clios o Representative Delegate to the .Stftto CQTcntioB, and E. L. Davis, Ksq. Sonatorii! Delegate, subject Ho the-nction of the other counties in the district. Ou motion Saturday, Juxk SOth, was set as the day of holding the lie publican Primary elections in Forest County. Adjourned. Our Washington Letter. Special to Uto Rkpublicajc. Washington, D. C, May 18, 77. At last nfter all our many damp wet weeks of waiting, we-WnahiDgton-ians are being favored with some as finesamples of summer weather as mind of man could ask for. A little hot, mayhap?, the thermometer managing yesterday to struggle up as high as 80, but when you take a capital cool breeze into consideration, it is, upon the whole, exceedingly comfortable. And m It 1 bow it we oniy uaa our beloved con- jgr lieie, to sliure our weather with us4 we would bo satisfied. Ilepreeentative Harrison, Carter Harruon, our Harrison, as the Chica go 7ttnr has it, him of Marine Band notoriety, democrat, of Illinois, denies that he has withdrawn from the Speak rhip contest. This iuiforraation gain its particular importaace from the knowledge itgrscs us that the Hon Carter is running it is something to know this. Heretofore the fact ap pears to have been kept very quiet I never heard of it before and doubt if your readers ever did und wo will probably never hear of it again. There fore I make it public. The Secretary of the Treasury yes terday docided that there could bo no compromise of the Chicago crooked whiskey cases, and directod that the district attorney at Chicago should proceed with their prosecution. The Secretary says th:it the expectation of compromise caused by the alleged ac tion of his predeccrsor may have led to confession and a waiver of legal rights by the present defendants, and therefore he is incliucd to yield to their wish that they have an opportu nity to appeal to CoDgtess for such ro Jiof as it may think right to grant tibem. In the meantime, however, the jpxoaetfution will proceed. Regarding the charges made against Attorney General Devens in being re jniss in the prosecution of those accus ed of being connected with the Mount Aiu Meadow Massacre, I may state that all of these offences are against the Territory, and not against the United States, and consequently come under the jurisdiction of the Territory f Utah. The sum of $20,000 was ap propriated by Congress to be nsod by the Department f Justice in prosecu ting those suspected, and this sum has all been exneull. Another appro priation of 20,000 fur the same pur ose will become araikbL on the 1st of July, which will be expended by (be Department as intended. The accouut of destructive tret fires in Xev York and the New Eng land States which circulates by tele giaph to-day is only a. day's record, but it shows a heavy direct pecuniary loss to the country. UU jUte bhould be a Warning to all young men who perpetrate poetry. Particularly referred to my friend, your city's cele brated elegiac poet Inriut. Ex-Trosident Grant has gone to Eu rope. He sailed from Philadelphia In the steamer "Indiana" yesterday, and us he left our shores carried with him the best wishes of hundreds of thousands of our citizens, who will anxiously look lor his successful ar rival on tho other side of the. Atlantic. After his many years of public ser vice Gen. Grant is entitled to rest and recreation. No President was ever subjected to more abuse while in of fice, and yet I doubt whether nny one ever made a more honest effort to serve his country faithfully. That his ser vices to the country in war nnd in peace are appreciated has been shown by the honors heaped upou him since his retirement from tho Presidential chair. Wherever he has gone bo has been most enthusiastically received. This has been the case notably during the last few dajs in Philadelphia. That he will be highly honored abroad I have not tho least doubt, for his fame is world-wide. Maxwell. Auditors' Settlement, Tionesta Twp. S. J. Seller.
