A TAM'ARLK WORK. The Centennial History of the lni ted States, from the Discovery of the American Continent to the Close of the First Century of American Indjj pendens. By James D. McCabe, Author of "A Manual of General His tory," "The Great Republic," Etc, Etc. It is a well known fact that the great mass of our people are compell ed to rely, for their knowledge of the history of their country, upon the outline works intended for the use of schools, which by their very ua turo ate brief ; designed for the com prehension of children, and in every way unsuited to the adult mind. Tbore has long been felt a genuine want of a History of the United States, covering the whole period from the discovery of the Continent to the pres ent day, and presenting in a succinct and comprehensive - form the history of our country through its various pe riods, from a higher and more thought ful standpoint than would be proper in a school history. This demand we are happy to say is satisfactorily met in "The Centennial History of the United States," a work which is evi dently destined to take rank as the Standard History of oar country. The author, James D. McCabe, is an able and well known historical wri ter. - We most heartily comnieud this work to our readers. It is no dry mass of details, no bombastic effort to inflame the national pride, but is a clear, vivid, and brilliant narrative of the event of our history, from the discovery of the American Continent to the present day. It gives a most interesting account of the Indians of XV o.-tu America, from the time of the -coming 01 trie wane men. I ho voya ges of Columbus, the explorations of tbe diuerent nations of Europe, and the wanderings of the Spaniards in search of gold and immortal youth, are told with graphic power. The story of tbe Revolution is related with all the interest of a romance; then follows a clear and succinct account of the formation of the Federal CVn etitution, the Second War with En gland, the Mexican War, and the vents of our history up to the com mencement of the Civil War. The History of the Civil War is related with intense vigor, and with strict fidelity to truth. The author writes throughout with calmness and impar tiality, and pleads tbe cause of n section or nartv. Tbe book contains an Appendix, giving an accouut of . 1 l T . 1-, . uc Buproacumg international vonieii nial Exhibition. It is comprised in one largo and nauosoma volume, oi Hza nturaa. nnrl contains 442 fine engraviucs on steel and wood. The book is issued by the inauonai ruDiisuing Uo., whose lm print is a guarantee to the excellence of the workmanship. The price is low considering the character of the work, and each subscriber is presented wua a iiandsome litograplno encra ving of tie Centennial Exhibition Uuildings and Grounds. It is sild bv subscription only, and Mr. M. Carpen ter, who is the authorized ageut for this section, is now canvassing lor it, AM OLD TUIE-OFFIt'E-SEEKEB. "I wants a offis with bang-up pay and nothing to do 1" The Detroit postmaster knew tfcat something would -happen if he had to run bis office by tallow candle power, and something has. In the dim light afforded by a candle one of the dis tributors put a letter intended for Mrs. Pomebody into Mr. Somebody's box. The Lueband opened it, found the pho tograph of a young man with his hair parted la the middle, and a letter starting off with: "Ever Dearest Angel Please find my photo, iu exchange for yours. Is the old hulk going to Chicago this week, as he intended H" The "old hulk" went out of the of fice in three jumps, and ho beat the street car three blocks in getting home.
