RKprw.icAif Static "J COMMITTKU, isnCRO, Feb. 1, 1876. ) II ARRI8BCRQ, In pentiance of a resolution of the Republican Slate Cum mil tee, adopted at a meeting held in JIarrisburg this day. a Republican State Convention, to be coinnoscd of delegates from each Senatorial and Representative district, to the number to which such district it entitled in the Legislature, is here by called to meet iu the city of liar risburg, at twelve o'clock, noon, ou Wednesday, March 29, 1876, for the purpose of nominating an Electorial ticket aud of electing Senatorial and Representee delegates to repre sent the, State in the Republican Na tional Convention, to be held at Cincinnati, on the 14th day of June, 187. By order of the Committee, IIenrt'M. Hoyt, Chairman. A. Wilson Nobris, Secretary. Our Washington Letter. epaelal to the Rcblioaw. Washington, D. C, Mar. 24, '76. "Tempu muianter ei mot mutanter cum cum ellit," the old Romans usad . to say which, being rendered in the vernacular, means, "Times change and we change with them," aud its truth was never more fully verrified than to-day. The wonderful tergiversation of par ties and remarkable changes in indi vidual opinion has never been so sud den and extreme as .now. Men like the chameleon seem to take their hue from the color of the substance upou which they rest. With the animal it might be the peculiar bark of a tree or the particular color of a leaf but with bis imitator man, positiou, pow er, or pelf seem to be the active agent in farming at least his political com plexion. With the democracy of to day this is undeniably the case and being thoroughly conscious of the fact that an itching palm is now and ever has been the distinguishing badge of all their order they at once discover . how the republicans were enabled to carry New Hampshire ; federal gold imparted a republican hue to the democratic chameleons of the State. - Now one would suppose that a party who joyfully hope that they have dis covered a "big bonanza" in tUe defal cations of a single lepublican official would be slow to admit .that such a warm of them like a herd of swine had been bought and sold. It once occurred that a couple of women got into a violent quarrel, and the daugh ter of one of them seeing that atTairs were approaching a crisis, came slyly up to her mother and godly' said, roainmv call her bad unmcs before she calls you one. . Now doubtless the " democratic party are quite familiar with this story, aud hence llio uusccmly ' liaslo with which the blatant cry ol ' "Rogue I rogue I rogue 1" with which ' the party has been exercising its lungs fur the past few weeks. A few short years back and politic al parlies cou tested for superiority upou great questions or national poll' cy, or political economy, aud ask even a democrat ot tuat day why he was democrat and he in some instances might give a reasou however falla cious. Cut the honest Denimy of to day when asked the question proudly lifts his unkempt locks and tells you It's because his father was oue before him. The democracy proudly claim as their tjunjer J nomas Jefferson, wnoae nartv ikMicv seam .m h,v t.v juiiuuuu upon a low estimate or humau nature iu general aud a con tempt of the majority in particular. Hence in attempting to elevate In in self to tho chief magistracy , '",vi, . ion, his mf.th -10 Vbf' W MLh" ' :-- and at the same time court the 'oibles, prejudices, and low propensi ties of the milliou. Do in agog ism was hie system, and uever has tho tearh- iucs of a leader been more willingly followed than are his by his party o"f Hie present day. lie was the father, toe lounder, the cstauhsuer, of deiua gogism in this country, and this un manly aud debasing system of polit ics has aiuce continued to coutamiu ate and debauch the politics of the land, rower is ennobling when houor ably acquired and patriotically -em. ployed, put when obtained by in trigue una uttea mr seinsii ends it is degrading alike to him who exercises it, and to those who are subjects to its influence. It was during the second contest between Jnckson and Adams that another clcmctit, that of hero worship, was added to the promiscu ous teachings of Jefferson. Iu that contest Gen. Jackson's war record gave him oue hundred and seventy three tectorial votes, to Mr. Adams' ighty-three. Tho came spirit per vades tle party still, and a forcible illustration of its power was exhibited in the eonle of Mr. Clay aud Mr. Polk. There lived at that time in this city au irisli gentleman who htld tlio position of public gardener iiii'J .i Jv-.ivy pice of ordinance with the democracy, nifd when a num ber of them met at a convivial pa"ty, as they often did, it was usual to call on "Jimmy" for a eong, and with great feeling he used to sing : "Hurrah I hurrah ! for the hickory tray, Polk, Istllas and Democracy I Gineral Jackson ban sot us frav. And thots do way with us all." Congress for the past week has done nothing to speak of. The investiga tions take up all the time of the ex confederates, so that they havo not even time te make secession and State rights speeches. They have not found another bonanza like Belknap, aud are very much annoyed that Pendle ton fell with Belknap. An inquiry iuto the cost of the invcstifiHtion, showing that tint le93 thnn $500,000 will bo expeuded iu paying for inves tigations, has rather startled the pub lic Tuesday the committee asked for $90,000 to pay expenses already in curred. They limited themselves to this amount intending to make anoth er application soon. Every witness will cost at least $300, and the other expenses, added to that of the 1000 witnesses will make up a heavy bill. Marsh is here and has becu before the judiciary committee. The impeach ment and indictment of Belknap will be carried on simultaneously. Presi dent Grant sent a pardon to Marsh and bis wife to get them to return. It is not thought hero that the demo crats were anxious to have them back. They would have preferred to have gone into the campaign charging that the republicans drove off the witness to protect Belknap ) but this game has been blocked. Maxwell. TIME TRIED AND FIRE TESTED!
