TUB IRON-WORKS OF TUB lTIARAOns. An English gentleman traveling ia these parts (near Sinai), im struck with the tmall blue, stones he discover ed in the dried-up water-courses which in the rainy season convey the thou sand streams that hurry to tho see, aud, having the curiosity to bring sorao home, he soon discovered that they were turltoiscs of no common or der. This determined him to make further researches. Eventual! v ho has built a house near the junction of the Wndy Kenuch, tho Wadj Mokat teo, or the written valley, and the Wady Megham. Here, aided by the frieudly tribes he had taken into his pay, he has discovered the old turkois mines of the ancient Egyptians, the rocks that they worked for the stones, the very tools they Ufed, aftd their polishing and grinding plaices. Being man of much euergy, he has brought to bear upon this fortunate discovery the advanced knowledge of our times, and he is obtaining and sending over to this country some of the finest speci mens of turkoises that exist. In such a lonely spot, he naturally has not confined his attention to this subject only, but has traced out the system of fortifications by which the Pharaohs protected their works and workmen, and, what is still more wonderful, has come upon the remaius of vest iron works, so vast indeed, that many thou sand people must have been employed upon them, unless the plant used was on quite as grand a scale as that of our largest furnaces in tho north of England. These works stand adjacent to the mines, on some hills at a place called Surahit-el Khadin. and were evidently conducted on the Catalan system (in . the opion of the discoverer). The ore was very imperfectly extracted slag brought over to this country, from tho ' immense heaps that, like mountains, are pulled around, contained as much at fifty-three per cent of iron. This district has remained unexplored, prob ably on account of its being out of the beaten track ; and in an unknown country there is no temptation to stray, particularly as the guides and drago men discourage any explorations which may add to the risk of the journey. It is, however, much' to .be desired that now that attention is drreoted to the locality, and, moreover, since the thorough investigation of its sites is likely to prove exceedingly profitable, that the enterprise and desire for knowlede of our scientific explorers may find help from the teady hand of oar commercial magnates, and thus that a past book in the world's history may, by English perse rereance, be re opened. . , ; . A German paper contains a reffly from a clergyman who was traveling, and who stopped at a hotel much fre quented by wags and jokers. The host, not being used to having clergymen at his table, looked at him with 'sur prise; the clerks used all their artille ry of. wit-upon him, without eliciting a remark iu self-defence. The worthy clergyman ate his dinner quietly, ap parently without observing the tribes and sneers of bis neighbors. One of them, at last, in despair at his forbear ance, said to kim : "Well, I wonder at your patience! Have you not heard all that has been paid to you V , "Oh, yes, but I am used to it. Do ' you know who I am!" '"No, sir." ' - 4 "Well. I will infi.rm v.. T m chaplain of a lunatic asylum ; such remarks have no effect upon me!" ' A Brooklyn lawyer's four-year-old daughter is marked as a diplomat in the future women's era. Recently her mother, returning from churoh, found her marshaling a long array of toy soldiers on the nursery floor. "Are you playing with soldiers oo Sunday, Louise?" said mamma. ' "Oh these are the array of the - Lord;' was the quick response of their curly headed commander. ; A good Yale sophoraor, a mission ary student, had a sister to visit him last week; The event was kuown and prepared for by wags, who stored his room with gin bottles, tobacco, cards, pipes,, three cornered uotes, and other devices of the Evil One. The sister was sad so was the youth. A sailor dropped out of the rigging or a snip 01 wafcporne ti.teen feet.and lull plump on Ilia head of the first lieutenant.
