Postmaster Collars Queer Methods. H. F. Go'ler, late postmaster at Fort Hill, this cnuaty, was found guilty of tampering with the mails by a jury in tha V. S. Dis trict Court at Pittsburgh last Th arsday and recommended to the mercy of the Coort. Goiler was a very stupid thief as the evi dence showed. A few months ago a daugh ter of one of the ieaJing citizens of that sec tioa went to the Fort H:I1 postmaster and ashed him to register a letter for her. The letter coutained Itt, was addressed to a lady sewing machine aii-e.it at Nw Lexington and was In part payment for a machine. A few weeks later tae agjit went to Fort Hiil aad demanded pay met. t for the machine, claiming that she bad writteu a number of tetters to her customer and bad oil been fa vored with a rep'y to any of them. Tie your.g lady became ri'iseoasy indignant, upon being "dunned" for the money, and aaid that sue bad forwarded the money for the machine by registered letter and could prove it by the postmaster. A Tiait waa paid to Postmaster Goiler and be vended iht young lady's statement ia regard to the trto having been sent by regstere-J letter and said that he had a receipt showing that it had been recsived by the postmaster at New Lexington. He at once begsa a search for ihe receipt and after rummaging throagb L s store finally was f jrced to admit that he was unabie to find it and concluded that he had destroyed it unintentionally. Goiler was confronted with the evidence that they hai procured and made good the ft) tut still insisted that he waa entirely innocent of the thefL Some time after this, Mr. D. Hsinbangb had occasion to forward a ama'l sum of money to Fittsbarga by registered letter. He waited anxiously for aa ac knowledgement from the party to w bora it bad been sent and not receiving one, like a prudent business man, he wrote aad de manded a receipt for hi money. His letter was apparently IreV-ed with contempt and in a short time he again wrote, demanding a receipt. Again do reply was vouchsafed biro. As a last resort Sfr. Heinbaagh coo eluded to mail a letter addressed to the par ty at the Ursma post o.H.e aad directed that a reply be forwarded to him at the same of fice. A reply followed as soon aa the mails could bring iL The original letter contain ing the money ha never reached ita desti nation, nor bad the letters of inquiry re garding it been received. The matter wts communicated to the Post Office Depart ment and an Inspector was seat to Fort Hiil to make aa examination of Poetmaster Goilers office.
