He bad taken his seat at the breakfast table and was just about to partake of the morning meal when suddenly he fell from bis chair to tbe floor and was dead. Heart disease was tbe cause. Policeman Gilbert arrested Mr. Percy Ken nel!, a yonng man of about twenty-five years of age, at the home of Lis parents in HvLdtcan, Monday morning and lodged him in the county bastile in the evening to await trial at the next term of criminal court, Tercy is charged with funiU H cr the prosecutrix being one Mary Rhoads, at present an inmate of the county home. Ex-County Commissioner Charles V. Wil liamson, of Shade twp., wa in town lor sev eral hours Monday. He was on his way to CoiiM jenoe ac a delegate to the fifteenth an nual convention of the Lutheran Sabbalb sebiiol Association of Somerset ounty. Delegates from every Lutheran congregation in the county were present at this con vention, which met Monday evening and adpurr.ed to-day. James B. Hoiderbaum, the well-known hardware dealer, reports hi- sales of agricul tural implements in the county this Season in excess of any year since he ha been eu gaged ill the business. Mr. Hoiderbaum kee; three traveling salesmen in the field ali of the time, and every few days books the saie of a mower, reaer and binder, or a thresher, at his place of business. Three clerks and a book-keeper are kept busy in his mammoth store. The many friends of ex-County Commis sioner Dave " Wagner will be pained to learn that be is suffering with a canoer on his right cheek. The cancer made its ap p?araiice several months ago, and bas been steadiiy increasingin size. Mr. Wagner has placed himself in charge of Dr. J. S. Taylor, of Johnstown, w bo Las met with (Treat suc cess in removing these alarming and often fatal growths. The doctor says he will hive no difficulty in effecting a permanent cure for his patient. If all goes well, this town will be crowded with people as it never Las been before on the glorious 4th. The Jr. O. U. A. M. are not only making every effort to attract large crowd, but they are making efforts to entertain the crowd that will be bere. Ad vices from the towns along the railroad be tween bere and Johnstown are to the effect that even-body ia coming. The tame re port comes from towns all over the county. The railroad comjiaay has promised to fur nish car? for all wbo desire to come over their line, and will run rpecial train to Johnstown in the evening for the benefit of visitors from tbe north. A half-dozen mu sical organizations will discourse patriotic airs throughout the day and an orchestra has been engaged to furnish dance music in the Opera House. The chief feature of tbe celebration will be tbe parade of members of the Jr. O. V. A. M. Nearly every Council ia the county will be represented, while many councils will torn out to a man. It only continued for about twenty minutes, but in that abort time enough water Lad descended to overflow many gutters and convert them into raging torrents. Several piles of lumber were swept away and carried two or three squares before they lodged on th side of tbe bill. Policeman Gilbert was patrolling his beat at the time and be says that the rain didn't come down in drops, but in streams, and that for a few minutes be contemplated mounting to the top of the soldiers' monu ment in tbe hope of finding a place of safety John Baily, a native of this county, was committed to jail Friday, tbe lf'-h inst, by Esquire Noah Case beer in default of bail to answer at the next term of quarter sessions to an indictment charging desertion, adul tery and bigamy on information of bis wife. Maggie Baily, an inmate of tbe county poor bouse, and known as Mrs. Baily Xo, 2. On the l'Jih day of May Baily was married to one Caroline Durst, s resident of this bor ough. 'Squire Casebeer performed tbe cere mony, the groom producing license secur ed from the Recorder of Bsdford county. After enjoying one brief month of honey moon Baily was brought before tbe justice wbo had performed the ceremony and was straightway committed. About twenty. five years ago Baily was married to one Lizzie Rector, and after living with ber for a half dozen years and becoming tbe father of several children be separated from bis wife and in lss.1 married Majgie Strainers . from the county borne. He continued to live with wife No. 2 fot six years and three chil dren blessed the union. In 1S9 Bany was granted a pension, receiving several hundred dollars arrearages, and it is said took cp with wife No. 1 until he had spent the mon ey. When be married o. a, miss .uursi. A competitive examination of applicants for the appointment from this Congressional district to the I". S. Military Academy at West Point, was held at the Court House in this place, Wednesday of last week. Tbe examining committee were Dr. H. S. Kimmell, County Superintendent J. M. Ber key, and J. A. Berkey, Esq. The applicants were Francis G.Smith, of Tyrone, and Kyle Roller, of Hollidaysburg, Blair county ; Charles W. Carter, and Her man Baumer, Jr., of Johnstown, and Simon M. Lutz. of Lutzvillc, Bedford county. They were a class of bright, fiue-looking yonng men and were subjected to a very thorough examination at the bands of tbe committee. The committee reported that Francis G. Smith bad atood tbe best examination, with Charles W. Carter a good second. In accord ance with the report of tbe examining com mittee Congressman Scull has recommended Mr. Smith for tbe appointment, with Mr. Carter as alternate. John Deshong, aged eighty years, of Lick ing Creek, Fulton c unty, Lad an experience with a vicious ram the other day which he will not soon forget. He was suddenly at tacked ia a corn field, knocked down and Lit four times while on tbe ground. Mr. Deshong caught the ram by the horns and fore leg and threw it Man and sheep were then both down.
