Feke teadeks have a irreat deal to say about how "protection fools the poor, Jiard-working farmers." The facts are that noon such Questions the American farmers are hard men to fool. It is because of this fact that free-traders never have been able to make any headway w ith them. Tb nnchaneeable Democracy is what the Courirr-Juurnal says of the par ty that "points up or down" or any way that its Dolitical boss "Simon" tells it. It demanded the Territories all otwned to slavery. It demanded that all the North should turn out to catch fleeing negroes. . It demanded that our "way ward sisters be allowed to go in peace." It has been for free trade in one locality and protection in another. It howled loud and long that "the Nation's bonds would never be paid," and that "the pub lic debt would be repudiated and lias howled just as loud over "the surplus in the Treasury" and the "debt being paid too fast" In fact it is the weather gauge party in politics which shifts about with every wind that blows. Jtfer Ocean. Ik Virginia the registration law of the State provides for striking off from the lists of registered voters each year, the names of disqualified and deceased to ters, and the addition of the names of new voters. It is provided, also, that there shall be notice posted of all names proposed to be stricken off on "Motion Day," and the person thus stricken off Las four days in w hich to appear and prove that he should be retained on the list. The Democratic practice this year has been to post at wholesale the name of every Republican voter in a precinct. But as soon as the notice was posted tip a Democratic henchman came along and tore it down. The Registrar having pro cured an affidavit that the posting h;ul duly taken place, at once proceeds to de clare all the names stricken off, w ithout giving a hearing to the airrieved parties, and thus Republican voters are disfran chined by the thousand. It is against such tricks as this that General Mahone has to contend, and yet we hope to see him saecest-ful. A Remlnlsoence of Can. Hartranft. Irita World.
