The value of advertising the year round is understood by enterprising tradesmen They know tbe worth of keeping their names and business before the public, even in dull times. Mr. Will L. IVwart, Editor ami Proprie tor of the Northumberland County Democrat and the Bunbmy Daily is spending the pres ent week in Somerset as the guest of the lo cal editor of the Herald. On Saturday evening a Somerset county man from the Alleghanies hauled 2,200 feet of lumber to Bedford on a wagon drawn by four oxen. This is considered a large load, and it is a curiosity to see a four-ox team. hiqnirtr'. There has been considerable talk of late of a Democratic paper beingeatablished at Mey ersdale. Wonder if that could have had anything to do with the CommariaTt sudden flop ; W as it afraid of competition and a di vision of local patronage ? Mr. Chas. H. Fisher the enterprisingbook seller has been the busiest business man in town for the past two weeks. Mr. Fisher has exclusive control of several of the lead ing text books used in the county and it keeps him moving to keep up with the de mand. If the editor or the Meyersdale ComiHerdal were not too stupid to understand anything it would have probably crept through his brain during the week he was in attendance at Court that District Attorney Biesecker is always engaged Tor tbe prontcution in crimi nal cases. Rev. J. W. PolHnberger, the Lutheran minister at Berlin leaves for his new field of labor, Leechburg, Armstrong county, in a few days. The Reverend gentleman has made many warm friends in Somerset, who join us in the wish that his new home may prove a pleasant one. Becher, tbe cWthing man whose store was burglarized several weeks since, swore oat warrants last week for the arrest of two young men well known in this community whom he feels confident are the parties who did the stealing. An ollicer is after them and they are probably under arrest by this time. We bave printed at this office during the past ten days bills advertising the personal projierty of nearly all the contractors of the Soutu Penn in this county, for sale. Mr. J. Inibrie Miller disposed of. a number of arti cles by public auction Saturday, and a num ber of the other engineers will dispose of their personal property in the same manner dur ing the week. Tbe Somerset Town ship School Board, at their meeting on Sat urday last, rescinded the adoption of Mill's Thysiology and finally adopted Steele's se" ries, and contracted with me to furnish tbe same to the schools. Parents, teachers and pupils will therefore call at Headquarters, Fisher's Book Store. Mr. Fisher lieing the authorized agent, and secure their Steele's Physiologies. Mr. Lud Gardner, of Jetferson Township, raised this year from one and one-eighth acres, seventy-seven and one-half bushels of oats by measure, which weighed forty- two pounds to the bushel. The oats is of the Rink variety, and the yield ceitainly is ahead of anything we have yet heard of. At the rate of thirty -two pounds to the bushel, the usual weight, this would make within a fraction of one hundred and two bush els to the acre. Tbe new school law in respect to the number of days teach er are required to teach for a month we publish below, and also give the decision of the public instruction department upon it : Sec 1. That a common school month shall hereafter consist of twentv days actual teaching, and no school shall be kept open in any district for the purpose of ordinary instruction on any Saturday or on any legal holiday, or in any county during the time of holding the annual county institute there in. Sec 2. All acts or parts of acts inconsist ent herewith be and the same are hereby re pealed. The following is a decision of the depart ment of public instruction bearing on the above law. . "Tbe act of June 25, 1S.-5. prescribing the number of days that shall constitute a com mon school month, requires all the schools to be closed on legal holidays and during the week of tbe annual county institute in the several counties. No allowance is made to the teachers for the time their schools are closed in any case. The act simply requires that twenty days actual teaching shall be ac counted for in the monthly reports. In em ploying teachers no restrictions or condi tions can be imposed by agreements or con tracts not authorized and warranted by the law itself. . The act of assembly, approved June 8. '81, (P. L. page 50),) requiring the school direct ors to allow tbe teachers the time and wa ges while attending the annual county insti tutes In their respective counties, is repealed by the terms of the new law. Tbe clearly implied purpose of the recent act in requiring the schools to be closed dur ing the time of holding the annual county institute is to give all the teachers an oppor tunity to attend the sessions. It is fair to presume that with the reduced number of days now constituting a school month the teachers will consider themselves under moral obligation to be present and participate in the exercises of the annual county institute in their several counties." -TheK' The Soith Pesxsylvama Cass. Tbe h taring of the South Pennsylvania case has eliiftMl trnm Harrisbnnr in New York, and Wk . l.,il.dpl,.l.i tl.i, mV A ndrpwi Carnegie told how he went into the scheme with Vanderbilt to make money, and said that when the latter went out he deemed it wise to follow his example. Dr. Hostetter detailed his connection with the enterprise and his fiery objections to its gobble by the Pennsylvania. He denounced Vanderbilt roundly for bis treachery in the matter. W. F. Shiink, chief Engineer of the American Construction Company, swore that 80 miles, or about five-eights of tbe road were com pleted, including the heaviest sections. Tbe piers and abutments and piers of tbe Sus quehanna bridge at Harrisburg are finished ; thence westward there has been no other construction until Burnt Cabins, ' Fulton county, is reached, except a milt section at each of tbe tunnels. Two-thirds of the work is done between Burnt Cabins and Sidling ! Hill, a distance of twelve miles. In Bed ford county seven miles were constructed between Ray's Hill and Everett. Between New Baltimore and Donegal forty -seven and one-half miles, exclusive of tunneling, are about half done. The estimate of the entire cost of the line will be $10,000,000. About 06 per cent, of the work is under contract. and about $3,442,0 0 worth of work was done up to July 1st. The work done since then will probably amount to about 7 per cent of the entire cost. The whole road from 'Harrisburg to Port Perry, about a9 miles, could be completed in one year from now. In New York, J. Afi.and Sub. this Kith day of Oct. ISri. JOHN C. BARRON. Chas. C. Shafek. Clerk O. C Judge Archibald, of Lackawana county, decides that the insertion of legal notices in pacers that have no general circulation " does not meet tbe requirements of acts of 19 Assembly providing for publication. The object of advertising is publicity. Tbe ob ject is defeated in hiding away advertise ments in obscure or class journals, where the general public never look for tbem. it often happens thai sales, divorce notices and important announcements of one kind and another are printed in journals of small circulation, or do circulation, with the in tent of fraudulent concealment. Judge Archibald has done a public service in call ing attention to this method of evading a requirement of law intended for the protec tion of public and private rights. FliiUi. Record. The Herald has bona jfrfe sub scription list of almost double that of any paper in the county, and in consequence is by far the best advertising medium. This fact is appreciated by the general public, as will be verified at any time by reference to our advertising columns, and by comparing them with those of any of the other county journals. While the Herald has no cause of complaint for want of advertising patron age, the fact remains that notices, such as referred to by Judge Archibald. are frequent ly inserted in obscure journals' in this county to the great detriment of parties in terested, and bringing them under the rule laid down by Jude Archibald. . The Mystery Solved. Why should we buy our Clothiug, Hats, Cups and Gents Furnishing Goods at Becher's Clothing Hall ? is a question that is being asked' ev ery day. But tlie answer iseasily and plain ly told. . The first reason is, that it is the only place in Somerset, where you can find an exclusive stock of clothing and Gent's Furnishing goods. Secondly, There is not any article pertain ing to a first class Clothing establishment that can not be fuund at Becher's Clothing Hail. Thirdly, You will find the largest and handsomest Stock of Suits and Overcoats for Sfen's, Youths' Boys' and Children's wear, that has ever been seen in Somerset. Fourthlv. Becher is an experienced Cloth ier, and he does' not sell you old stock lor new. When he has an article in bis store that does not sell as readily as it should he l educes the mice to such a low figure that a customer cannot help but buy. Fifthly, Becher pays cash for his goods, and thereby saves a heavy discount, which be proposes to irive to his customers. Sixthly, All goods are, guaranteed as rep resented or money refunded. The public is respectfully invited to call and examine his mammoth stock before purchasing elsewhere, and they can readily solve the mystery. B. BECHER, Jr., lauding Clothier and Hatter, Somerset, Pa. CosKH KM E Items. Chestnuts, apples, cider, turnips, pump kins and other edibles, are crowding the market. The colored canip-meeting was a grand success. Rev. J. J. Jones, of the A. M. E. Church, did the preaching. Mr. I. F. Zufall has commenced the build ing of a new storeroom on Oden street. He expects to occupy it in about three weeks. The bridge over tbe Casselman river, that has been condemned by the Commissioners, is dangerous to cross and will most likely go down before spring. Tbe newly appointed postmaster has not received his commission yet, and the post office remains in the old place. " Marvelous are thy ways," oh ! Cleveland. Michael Ilimmel, of this place, died rath er suddenly, on the Gtb inst. Mr. H. was a very fine citizen, and his family has the sympathy of the entire community. Tbe prosecution of Rudolph Ferner, Alex ander Korns, Reuben Woy, Daniel Kimmell aud Jesse Hoover for taking illegal fees, by S. P. Snyder and "Taxation without repre sentation " or ten per cent, for collection, did not bring the county much money. The Pittsburgh M. E. Conference left Ad dison circuit unsupplied, for the first time in many years. It is said that Rev. David Flanigan, of the West Virginia Conference, is to take charge of the circuit. Confluence circuit, as usual, is to be supplied. Such has been the case for ten or twelve years. Some people claim that times are getting better, but they were never harder than now. When Cleveland gets all the one and two-dollar bills into the treasury and locks them up, and forces upon the people dollars worth only eighty cents, times may im prove. Wallace Hechler and Miss Amanda Yonnkin, both of the vicinity of Kingwood, Pa. 1)1 KD. The following obituary notice lias been sent us for publication. Mr, Yonnkin was one of tbe best known citizens oftheSonth f tbe county. For nearly forty years he has been a subscriber to the Hibald- YOUNKlX. Rev. Herman Younkin was rn November 27.1.1, and died September 21. IS' 5, He was a native of Somerset coun ty, and his life was spent in the community where he died, and so the life of Herman Younkin is an integral part of the history ot the couuty itself. He was an aci-eptable member ot tbe Methodist church for nearly fifty years, and a local preacher for over thirty years, and once a year all along these years the question was aked iu the quarter ly conference: ''Anything against Herman Younkin ?" And the response was, noth ing against him This testimony to tliejlife and integrity of the deceased is vaiuable( and a source of comfort to the family. For nearly fifty years a member of the church, and a good part of that time a minister of the gospel in the midst of the people with whom he spent his whole life, comes the response, " Nothing against bim." And as he passed from human recognition into the presence of the Universal Father, he has received tbe divine approval of Well done good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy lord." Another life has ended. Another presence has passed from among us. His presence will no longer be seen, and felt in the busi ness of tbe community ; his presence and voice in tbe councils of the church have ceased. But a blameless life and his faith ful teachings have left a salutary influence on the hearts and minds of tbe people. To the family, a widow and six children, let me say, follow him as be fallowed Christ, so that at tbe last yon may be numbered with tbe saved in heaven. M. L. Wkkkly.
