Meyers, editor of the Harrisburg 1'atriut and wife, have been spending the past few days in Somerset. Already the grain and grass is beginning to look fresh and green, and the wild flow ers have commenced to bloom. Street Commissioner Davis had a force of hands at work last week. Many of our streets need the attention of the Coiuruis iouer badly. Only one "drunk and disorderly" was brought before Burgess Col born last week. He was fined three dollars and costs, and was gently admonished by the Burgess. The official stenographic report of the Guiteau trial, as publisbed by the Govern ment printing office, Washington, make three octavo volumes of some nine hundred Iges each. The general impression seems to be that the fruit crop this season will be large. The regular amount of growling is of course in dulged in, but there are no facts to substan tiate gloomy predictions. Rev. Charles Steck.a well known LuthV- an preacher who has preached all tbrou ughX Western Pennsylvania, and who is now lo cated in Pittsburgh, has forsaken the pulpit and adopted the stage as his profession. The Somerset people will hardly relish it to have their venerable chancellor, Hugus, credited to Westmoreland county, as a juror for the next term of the T. S. Circuit Court. But such a thing has been done. Johnrtown Trihtttie. The trains on the Somerset & Cambria Railroad were considerably delayed last Thursday by a large rock, weighing twenty or more tons, falling on the track from the side of the cut near Border's station. Mr. Coffin is having all the build ings, fences etc. repaired, and is stocking it with fine horses and cattle. At an adjourned court last week a new trial was refused in the case of the Com monwealth vs. George Shaulis, convicted of perjury at the January term, and Shaulis was sentenced to the penitentiary for one year. In the case of the Commonwealth vs. S. M. Bell a new trial was granted, and the case will probably be retried next week. The Presbyte-y of Redstone will meet in the Presbyterian church in this place on Tuesday of next week, the 24th inst., at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The sessions are open and all are cordially invited to attend. Two men were arrested by Policeman Gilbert Fridav morning, on a charge of hawking and peddling without license. They had a hearing before Justice Hicks, who committed them to jail to await trial at Court. On the way to jail one of them eluded the vigilance of the officer, and has not since been heard of. The were engaged in selling patent clothes wringer. Much of the trouble the farmer experien es in the replanting of croiw arises from carelessness in selecting seed. Every far mer should see to it that the seed he plants are fully matured and not injured by damp ness or freering. A little eare in selecting seed before the season for planting arrives would not only save time, but perhajs be one of the most important helps to a large crop. The trout-fishing season commenced on the 1st of this month, but there seems to be less interest manifested in the sport this year than previously. Very few of the many who enjoy the pastime have thus far taken advantage of the legal permit to indulge in it. However, the season is young yet, and perhaps ere its close the usual number of anglers will find their way to the mountain brooks. Col. Reid, of Dunbar, Fayette county, was in Somerset Monday. While here he had placed on record a deed covering twenty-seven pages of legal cap, conveying some seven thousand acres of land in T'pper and Lower Turkeyfoot township, this county, to theConnellsville and t'rsina Coal and Coke Coinjany. The company is organized under the laws of this Commonwealth with a capital stock of $400,000. As fortunes are considered nowadaysi Peter Cooer was not a very rich man. Four years ago he gave $1,000,000 apiece to Edward Cooper, his only son. and A. S, Hewitt. He reserved forhimself an income of about $100,000, the most of w hich he gave away. Dnring the war his income from his iron works, which are among the largest in the country, averaged $1,500 a day, but diirinc the last few rears the losses have been heavy, the firm refusing to discharge any of their men. Parker and two other gentle men from Iteaganviile, Westmoreland Co., were in Somerset Saturday, attracted hither by a notice pubblished in the II eb ALU last week, of the arrrest of McMann and Eskin, the men who were lodged in jail last week. Mr. Parker fally identified both men as having seen them in his store on the 28th of March, the night of which day his store was robbed. He identified a number of the articles they had disposed of, and said that among other things Ftolcn from his store was a large lot of postage stamps. The fine weather of the past lew days has given a wonderful impetus to all kinds of out-door work. Painters are everywhere at work, brightening the exteriors aud decora ting the interiors oi dwellings and public buildings ; garden-making is engaging the attention of many ; the cleaning up of yards, lawns, and premises generally is the order of the day, and there is scarcely a species of out-door eniplovment that is not now in vigorous prosecution. The result of all this will be that when the summer comes every thing will le bright and tlean, and in keep ing with the spirit of the season. These are conditions particularly incident to our cli mate and location, and they illustrate as closely as anything possibly could the thrif ty character and cleanly habitsofoar peo ple. April 16, 1S83. m m The reputation of Eli Perkins as a humor ist, reached Burlington long ago, and the people of this city, who enjoy a good thing, went to Mozart Hall last night to hear his first lecture in this place, nnder the auspices of the Y. M. C, A, The subject of the lecture w as the "Phil osophy of fun." He descriled the distinc tion between wit and humor, and illustra ted his remarks by representations of differ ent lectuiers and quotations from different authors. From the commencement to the close the audience was kept in the best of spirits, and the laughter was loud and fre quent. The lecturer frequently dropped the humorous vein and became eloquent, but through the whole were brilliant flashes of wit that caused the audience to forget the storm outside, and forget all business carea or household troubles, and roar with laugh ter when any striking hits were made. The humor of Eli Perkins is charming, and seems to burst out spontaneously as though it were impossible to be confined, anda bet ter pleased audience was never collected in this city. Hekals : ' Yager's" wrath over ray communication seems to be very deep seat ed for a boy. The simple advice to call a church by its right name was well meant, and yet this writer refuses manhood if that is required of man's estate. When he has some experience in life among men he will find that as class they do call tilings and persons by their right names and very plain ly too. It would be painful for us to call "Y'ager" by his right name, so we will re frain from it. His general ignorant of the tenets of the Church of God he attempts to coverby a wrathful expression against the Writer of this letter, and yet with his allega- of freedom and non-sectarianism, he has not the moral courage to subscribe his name to his opinions. Of the objects and purposes or the Church or uod 1 Know enough to say that I need not come to Som erset to learn of the division called Wine brennarians, for no such division exists. By the heavy thick talk of "Yager," we are inclined to believe that it will take a great change to brine him up to the point IJro m which he is pleased to say that we came ffdown. When "Y'ager" feels justified iu giving his name I will be ready to argue with him on the propriety, right or reason for calling us Winebrennarians. My parting advice to bim is that, as be has made up his mind to remain a boy, he should try to be a good one. Yours truly, W. II. Gooss. Mt. Pleasant, April 13.
