We regret that we are unable to furnish the usual amount of reading matter to our patrons this week, but the merchants have made such a run on our space with their spring advertisements tbat we find it im poeaible. However, after the present week we expect to be able to furnish the amount of reading matter that our friends are accus tomed to seeing. The Washington county lawyers were in a compromising mood at the last sitting of the court. When the court called over the list of causes, it was discovered that all had been amicably adjusted, and there was noth ing to present to the consideration of court and jury. The Clearfield Ilafttman Jutrnal says "William Harrington, aged about 60 years, was brought from Da Bois and lodged in jail on Monday evening, charged with the murder of Isaac Orerand, of about the same age. Both were Englishmen and both were miners. They had been living together in a shanty, and had some difficulty, the na ture of which we have not inquired into, but it is said that Overand went off and got drunk, and then returned with a club, beat down the door, and was about to try the same game on Harrington, when the latter picked up a priming needle (a long sharp instrument used for priming a blast), and ran it through Overand's breast, killing him instantly. Both have been described as peaceful men, and have lived together for many years. Excrssios to Marklktox. In the Xorth American Review for May, Carl Schurz, treating of "Party Schisms and Future Problems," presents many well-con sidered observations which cannot fail to interest in the highest degree that large and growing class of citisens who refuse to be influenced by obsolete party cries. "Days ith Longfellow,' by Samuel Ward, con tains personal reminiscences of the beloved poet just deceased, extending over a period of forty -five years. It is with sincere sorrow that we announce this morning the death of Delia C. Boyd, wife of Mr. Charles X. Boyd, which occur ed at 12 o'clock noon Sunday at bis resi dence in this place. D.. in 1844, we take the following recipe as a preventive for scarlet fever Half a grain of powdered belladonna root, mixed with a small quantity of sugar and divided into ten doses. One of these powders is given morning and evening to, children of from one to two years old, two to those from three to five, three to those from six to nine, four to those from ten to fourteen, and five to adults, to be continued for from ten to fifteen days. We have the testimony of several of our citizens tbat the above is a certain preven. tive of this disease. A Card. We are in receipt of the follow ing letter from Prof. R. R. "Most especially do we commend careful perusal of them to such of our people as are in the habit of making their purchases in that city. The Fulton Republican savs: The recent action or the engineers in the upper end of the count', in the employ of the South Pennsylvania Railroad, looks more than ever like business. After mak ing a number of surveys and shortening up their line as much as possible, Mr. Quien, who is now at Fort Littleton, reports the surveys as completed, and has sent elabor ate maps of this portion of the line to Mr. Oliver P. Barnes, in Xew York. The force of men under his employ are now preparing the line for the work of construction. They are felling timber, Ac., preparing the way for a course one hundred feet wide. Mr. Quien is reported as saying that there is no longer any doubt that the road will be built. In confirmation of this opinion is the fact that a number of corps along the line west ward from this county have also finished their line surveys, and are now preparing the route for construction. The Connellsville Gnurirs says. The South Pennsylvania Railroad, about which there has been so much speculation, is going right along with their location, notwithstanding the rumors to the efiect that the corporation has no existence save on paper. The ways of railroads, hii. 5 u ot Providence, are past finding out, but it is confidently assert ed in some quarters that the South Penn sylvania will really be built Division Engineer Miller was interviewed by a Cuurwr reporter as to the route of the new road. According to his story the route is as follows: From Bedford county to Som erset, the road crosses the mountains through Deeter's gap; from Somerset it runs west ward to the north of Bakersville and Lau- relville, crossing the Somerset A Mt. Pleas ant pike several times, runs along Lohr's run a short distance, and piercing Laurel Hill at Krupp's mill, emerging into Done gal tow-nship, Westmoreland county; thence the line croasas the bead waters of Indian Creek near the village of Donegal, and con tinuing eastward crosses the Chestnut Ridge at Laurel ville. where it strikes the head wa ters of Jacobs Creek, down which stream it is projected to the Yonghiogheny river. From this point westward, the route is as yet undetermined. The following is taken from the Cham. bersburg Repository: We are in possession of information Irons prominent railroad offi cials, who should be in a position to know whereof they affirm, that the projectors of this mad are in earnest in their intention to build it, and tbat the commencement of ac tive operations will be postponed no longer than th necessary preliminary arrange ments may require. It has been supposed by some that the Pennsylvania railroad is interested in some way in this work, but this we are assured to not the case. The syndicate is a New York combination pos sessed of ample power and means to build the road. Tbey expect to make their con nections with Philadelphia and Xew York through the Reading and Xew Jersey Cen tral railroads. This road will connect with the Rcadiog at or near Harrisbarg. x- For some time past it has seemed though tbe Pittsburgh A Atlantic Railroad had ceased to be. But such is not tbe case wear happy to say. Work has been pro greasing rapidly in tbe office at Pittsburgh, but for some reasons tbe newspatiers have been unable to obtain any information in regard to what is being done. A few days ago we met at the Washington House, this place, an engineer who is employed in the office at Pittsburgh, and is perfectly familiar with the inside workings. In reply to our question, "Will tbe road be built?" he said emphatically that it certainly would. 1Ye following is the information we gleaned from him: He says a corpse of engineers commenced work at Connellsville a few days ago to locate the road, and that they are working this way as fast as they possi bly can. Several other corj will be put out within the nest three or four weeks, and the entire route from Connellsville to Cham, bersburg will be located at an early day. Tbe road is being built bv the PiUbuivh & K PhiladelphU Reading and WesteruJ JQ $0Ql Maryland IUtlroads. S ilia T6rtUi, Main. HxADQcawma 9o Mkkkxxl Frag. On April 14, 1882. Herman J son of J. M. and E. S. Cook, of Somerset, aged 8 years, 1 month and 4 days. BARXET.-On April 6, 1882, Daisy Ella, daughter of Henry Rarnct, aged 3 years and 10 days. " HORNER. On the 19th day of March, IS&2, at his residence, in Jenner township, Somerset county. Pa., Christian J. Horner, aged 31 years, 3 months and 9 days. About six years ago Brother Horner found Jesus precious to his soul, and, on profes sion of faith iu the Lord Jesus Christ, was admitted to membership in the Lutheran church. The history of his religious life is not one of many years, but it leaves an in fluence behind which tells for good, and will doubtlessly assist in shaping the course and character of others who were intimately ac quainted with him. He gave evidence in his life that he loved the Savior and His church. From the time he set out to serve the Master, he lived a faithful Christian lire. Whut a comfort to the mourning friends to know that he died the death ot the righteous! He gave evidence during his affliction that he was fully resigned to his fate, and amply prepared for the final change, for "his delight was in the law of the Ixird." In full hope of a glorious im mortality he passed away, and is now no longer toiling wearily and painfully along the pathway of life, but hss soared upward to the everlasting Rock upon which he had built his faith. He is no longer here; be is there, seeing, knowing, loving as only the blessed can see and know and love. Al ready kneeling at the throne, he has receiv ed his welcome, and is dorbtless reclining on the bosom ' f his Savior.
