Art has a large p!ai and a great influence in the; world, and t is an undeniable fact that progressive civilization may be giiaged by the degree of attention paid to objects cf refined beauty and pure, elevating loviiness. It is not inan.v ye:ers since, that good jiie-turcs could emly be ail'orded by the very rich, but now all this is change d, and works of art of real merit arc wiihin the ready means of all, and few homes there are in which are not to be found evidences of caiture in the right di rection. Home Minuld and can be made the most desirable place tor all members of the fami ly, and n it least among its attractions can the pictures with which il is adorned Ise re garded. Thse of the rising generation, who are brought up under re lined iufluci.ee, will bets. me our noblest men and women of the future, in no way can the attractive ness of home be increased so cheaply und effectively a- !- the addition of beaiitilul pictures, lie-tuns that but a few years since cest large suais of money may now be pur- ch;sed for the veriest trifle, ami if the lca-t judgment is brought to bear in the selec tion, works ot real merit may be Intel ; or if the purchaser has no taste in such matters, all that u necessary is for him to be sure that he purchases the goods from a reliable house. In this coonei tion it may be prop er for us to mention the great Art Publish in lirui of Me-ssrs. George Stimson A Co.. Portland, Maine, who during the last eur have sold over ten miiiio;;s of pictures. It is believed that they pay more for (otage sumps than any other house, not only in tins Country, but in the world at lare. During the year IsT'J they paid for postage slauijis over eighty -seven thousand dollars. During the j car Its) they paid over one hundred and twenty-two thousand dollars for postage stamjis, and this year their iwst age will amount to about one hundred and liny thousand dollars. Thus it will be seen that Messrs. Stinson & Co., pay at least the thsee hundredth iart of all the postage col lected by the United States government, and it should be remembered that we have near ly City thousand jsist-ortices. and ten thous and newspapers. While eu - h great sums are paid for postage, the tact should not be lost sight of that only the smaller packages are sent by mail, all large orders being sent by express or freight. We have lately received four elegant steel engravings, published by Messrs. Stinson it Co., and a dozen beautiful chronio Cower panels ; ail are line works of art, and do credit to the publishers. The steel engrav ings are very large size of each M by -40 inches. The piales were engraved in Lou don by well-known English uiastvrs of art, and cost, when they came into the owner's hands in Portland, custom duties paid, some thirty-two thousand dollars. These engravings are of the class that scil in Eu rope for three guineas per copy, which is over liftcen dollars. To engrave a single plate of this size and description of work manship, requires the labor of a most skill-1 ful artist from eine year to two years, ami ot ten longer.
