Chicago is bound to outstrip tbe eastern cities so long as the Great yorth- west holds her as the commercial centre. There are soma large towns along tbe Chicago & North western iUilroad, such as Elgin, Dixon, Morrison, Sterling, Clin ton, Lisbon, Mount Vernon and Cedar Itapids. we were In old Somerset county eight weeks and visited a great many lrieuds, but did not get arouud to all. for the lime was too short. W e are sorry that we could uot see tbem all, but duty called us home or we would have stayed longer. We were loath lo leave as we were kindly treated by all, and especially by our par ents. It is a pleasure for us to tell our children who stayed at borne, of their grandparents, uncles and cousins, and to show those nice photo's we r.-ceived when in old Somerset county. we wish to return our sinocre thanks t you for your kindness in taking us around trom place to place and coring lor us; ana the only way we can repay you for your kindness is for yon all to come and see us. aud we will try to do our best in our lim ited circumstances to return tbe compli ment. Our kindest regards to one and all, J. W. Bell. Christmas at Harskksville. Mr. Editor: While the good people in all quarters have been making merry over their Christmas trees and ttirkejs, tbe quiet little town of Harnedsville has not been idle. Please allow me a little space in your pajier, that I may give you a racy sketch of the same. We bad been made to eiect something gooi from the entertainment which our Harnedsville bun lay School w ere going to give us, but we must confess thai we were more than agreeably disappointed. On entering tbe church, of course the first thing to attract attention was li.e neat and tasteful arrangement of the room. The exercises of the evening opened with prayer by Rev. J. A. Smith, followed by an address by the pastor, Hev. J. B. Taylor. The address was filled with nice thoughts and good commor-sense Christ mas talk. Following tbe preacher mem bers of the Sunday School, mostly litile tolks, appeared utxn the stage and offered their well selected speeches or read ibeir essays written tor the occasion. Mr. Har ry Daniels was about to close ths part o1 the programme with a manly little oration, when. "Out in the s-treel there arose such a clatter, he had to run to the door to see what was the matter." And, upon open ing it, in stepped jolly old Santa Claus, who entertained the audience for awhile on both fun and tbe contents of his peanut i basket. 7 his ended tbe speechmaking ; hundred and fifty, together with tbe well and when he had gone and Superintendent filled pouches ut good things lor tbe Sun Guller had succeeded in restoring quiet, ' . . . .11,...: i. ...: ..,,. 1 I iuc uiauiuuuiru ui iuc lies mo uu iu Kgc trees began. House convened at the hour appointed; was opened with prayer by Philip Iteitz. Queries drawn and discuaied in which several of the ladies took part. Discussion. Improved plan for next year s work. It should be the aim of every established school to bring into its ranks all children on its territory, and each school should send out Missionary committees whose duty it should be to bring in as far as pos sible all children and parents. Discussed by Shoup, Lambert, Wechtenbeiser and Koontz. Inasmuch as there are isolated communities all around us. too far from us to be taught in tbe school, we should have spe:ial teachers and committees to carry the blessings ot the Sunday school to them and it should be done at least every two weeks, before the hour session. Dis cussed by Shoup, Koontz and Wechten beiser. We evidently should do better than heretofore for tbe infant department of our schools ; it is suggested that we secure a good, illustrated, infant class les son leaf or paper of some kind answering the purpose, and the best teaching talent assigned to this class ot scholars. Dis cussed by Koontz and Trent. Report ot committee on resolutions received and adopted. Roll call of officers and teachers t r the year ; two responding from Shade, five from Hoovers, nine from Graern, one trom Lamberts. Tho Necrologist, W'm. Httolctd, That in the estimation of this Convention, it is necessary in order to attain tbe end ot iut organization, that all the schools ot the Pastorate be organized and conducted on essentially the same principles. littolr-ed. That It is necessary in tbe estimation ot this Convention, lor every teacher in the several schools to subscribe a pledge binding him to make his work in the school a matter ot conscience. Tbe convention was certainly a success. in the work of schools, and would have been more successful had not tbe report ol wo ot the schools been almost a failure, as ul be seen in their report above. Secrrtart. Christmas Oppbrikos. The Reform ed people ot Somerset county and indeed t l tie whole church, are taught by their pastors and tbe church papers, that a Christmas service that is entirely selfish in is nature, tails to be imbued with the true christian spirit of the season. Tbe custom ot niving trills in families and amomr friends, and to the children of Sunday schools, is encouraged. But it the gifts of love and chanty end wun these, then has the offering, in a certain sense, been only selhsh one. Hence, tbe Sunday school nd congregations ot the Ketormed church. from the youngest child to the oldest mem ber, are always directed to brine Christ mas onerings lor some benevolent cause outside of. and beyond the immediate con gregations. These offerings the congre eat ions of Somerset county have for the last decade been devoting to the cause of h ! Orphans. The Orphans' Home, at But ler, l a., and at omelsdort, l a., are sup ported mainly in this manner. You will please excuse me for ; not sending tbe money sooner. I intended ! to send it last week, but forgot it : because i Sue Hay, from near Berlin, a cousin of mine, was visiting us several days, so you win perceive your money was forgotten I had so many questions to ask about triends that 1 could think of little else, but wm try to lie more punctual in the future. I see by reading tbe Herald thai you have had several marriages in high life. Good luck to them ; I hope at the close of lite tbey will be able to look back aud say tbey did not wish it changed! I expect to hear, some ot these days, that the Busi ness Manager or the Herald, L. is. S., has taken unto himselt a rib. Well, I would really be glad especially if she was one of Somerset's fair daughters, tor there are many more ladies than gentlemen in Somerset. 1 hope you had a merry Christmas and a nappy .New-year. I bave been much pleased with the course you have taken in regard to the affairs of ihe government. Yes. keep on and drum away until every rebel has gone home to remain there until they know how to respect Northern car pet baggers. I think it is an insult to our brave boys in blue to allow suca proceed ings in Congress as we bad last year. Per haps some one might ask how are we to help it T I say don't vote such men into office, and my word for it, you will have no occasion to be ashamed ot tbe proceed ings at Washington. 1 like a red hot Republican paper. 1 want none of your milk-and water papers My motto is, "be sure you're right, and then go ahead, and bave no tears but all will be well. For my part, I think (and I believe there are men who think I am right on that question) if wo men took a deeper interest in political af fairs and not so much in gossiping, it would be an advantage to them aud their child ren. It is woman alter all that rules the world. I do not believe that either of my sons will ever vole the Democratic ticket, although most of my relations are 'good (7) old Democrats,' and I believe some ol tbem arc still voting for Jackson. I have been on the right side since John C. Free- mont run for President. 1 cannot sec how a Christian can vote with the present Dem ocratic party. Take the Catholics and whisky portion out ol the Democratic ranks, and there would not be a corporal's guard left at least in our large cities. When I set tbe right ot suffrage I pro pose to run tbe editor ot the Somerset Her ai.d for President. And why not? I am sure he would do better than some of our Presidents have clone.
