' We kindly ask permlmlon to respond through the column ot your excellent pa per to the wholesale denunciation of our former article relative to the tuition of the normal schools. Our object was to ask a few simple questions, hoping to obtain sim ple explanations ; but Instead your paper brought to us a tirade from a Berllnlus that sounded more like the banns and anathema of Popedom, or the invectives of a barbarian than the words ol a cultiva ted and well-bred specimen of humanity. However, his article, which is only an at tempted evasion of the truth, ancgested a tew points which we raise to consider : First the author, lid represents himself aa a young mm who expects to altend one of th norm il schools this fall. If this ho true, we ak what riht be had to offer his explanation ol the milter that belonged exclusively to the normal teachers and County Suporintondent. Kreu though hi teacher had "given hint the explantiioa ha claims to have received, if hi ii truly ci- po menlin, he would never hive ttiought of ukine this matter from bis teacher's hands. It is only reasonable to suppose that not one man from the entire body ot teachers in Somerset county, save this learned nrelate. would ever have thought of SUCQ a thing, unless employed as private secre tary, in which case we simply ask tor tne countersign. But it he Is only a private, tie would belter pull in his horns, curl down in his kennel and save his yelping until it is call ed tor. But if he i an efhcuil, so to speak, we ask noon what authority or lor what pur pose he appears arrayed iu the attire of another. Surely il would be more honor able to stand in his iosition and speak as a man, than t3 skulk along the by-ways with the dagger in his hand ready to stab it to the heart. Here every candid reader of this paper must say there aie two irreconcilable lacts. A man meddling with business that does not concern him, or else repre senting himself as what he is not "Oh, consistency, thou art a Jewel, but tbou art set in a casket of mud. 2nd. The Tuition. Notwithstanding the explanation of this mental prodigy, the whole matter is still veiled in mystery. How could we as teachers be expected to know what division of the tuition the professors had in mind when they wrote their articles for publication! On the con trary, would wo rather not be expected to take their meaning trom tneir words, tnan to hope that they intended it to be differ ent t Heretofore the announcement was. "normal tuition, fO," and every one ex pected to pay and did pay extra tuition for extra studies. Xow, when the card ap peared this year with "normal tuition, $7," was jt not rational tor ns to suppose mat for all studies not generally included in the normal course there would be extra charges oyer and above the (7 T The only object that we can see there could have been in such an announcement (and we are not alone in this belief) was to screen a certain faction of public parasites ia the would be -county -seat ot somerset county. The professors of Somerset, Centreville, and other schools, have published their rates at the old standard, thus virtually denouncing the 7 publication ; and that "Goddess of knowledge m "tne Atnens of America" stands alone on the new ba sis. Of course, we could not expect that this collegian, struggling so long in the pangs ot parturition and ia the travail of her soul longing to be delivered, would meet on a level with the lesser lights ot the county. Xo, this is a progressive age and trom hence there comes a sweet voice gently whispering "come op higher." ikl. Our lonner article. AS before sla ted, all we asked for was an explanation. W e did not desire to make a display of rhetoric, nor was grammatical accuracy uppermost in our mind ; however, we will admit that all fhould strive to be accurate. But w-e designed to present some lacts and the truth The ex pression our critic, that wonderful mon strosity ol intellectual greatness, quotes, happens to have the correct form of the verb in the original manuscript which twe still have in our possession. But admit ting the incorrectness, and not caring whether the article is even worth a per cent in point ot grammatical accuracy, we believe the truth ot the article is almost universally acknowledged throughout the county, and wc wculd "rather be right than President IL Xew Lexington, Auj. 2, 1579.
