' I r Philadelphia, May, 6.; Anton Probst lias Confessed, i Yesterday fternoon, In the presence of hit -spiritual adviser the paBtor of St. A!phonsns Catholic Church, Mr. Perkins, the superintendent of the prison, end the medical staff on duty at the prison, Anton Probst made e free, volun tary and open confession snch a totifessjon as stamps him to be the most blood thirsty wretch known in the annals of history. Hb KILLED ALL THE MEMBERS OP THK DEARISO VAMII.T. , - . ' ? '.''!'"! Ha was visited by his spiritual adviser late in tlie afternoon, who entered into con versation with him, and in the presence of the above named officials Probst was told that his best course, both in a spiritual and moral point of view, was to confess all he knew about the tragedy, and to tell tho God's truth. He was told that his obliga tions to the authorities, by whom , he had been treated so kindly, und every considera tion in the future, demanded that he should muko a clean breust of it. Trobst, after the lapse of a few minutes, proceeded to nroke the following statement by way of ft coKfessi'ok. He stated that he had no accomplice, and conceived the horrible crime' unaided and alone. The theory of the murder ns pro duced on the trial, and the one so generally accepted by the public, is entirely true in in muin parts. He stntes that be conceived lbs murder on Friday, nnd that night slept with the boy whom he intended to make his first victim, namely, Cornelius Carey. lie knew thut Carey was working near the hay rick, and he proceeded there with the large axe, but his heart failed him three tmes before he could induce himself to strike the unsuspecting boy tlie futal blow. At last he mustered sufficient courage and went nt his fiendish work killing Ciirey just in the manner he Ircquently described. Tlie tight of the Hood of the boy, Probst Mates, produced in him a detilith and blood thirsty feeling, and he determined atone to vivrdcr the entire family. He disposed of tlie body of the boy as de scribed before so often, and then deliberate ly walked over to the- house. He entered, nnd told "Charley," the little boy next in years to ''Willie," who was absent, that he wanted him to help him do some work in the barn. The little fellow followed him, nnd as soon as he got him inside the barn door, he dispatched lnui wuu the small axe he had secured. He then went back to the house, nnd told Mrs. Deal ing that something was the matter with one of the cows, and he wanted her to come to tlie barn. She went, and he fol lowed, and as soon as she entered inside, he struck her in the head and killed her. . He then states that he went back to the house aud brought the children out, one at' a time, and taking them inside the bam, despatched them, one by one, with the same axe. In each instant he cut their throats, and placed the bodies in tlie corn crib him self, just in the position they were found. He then covered them up, aud proceded to wipe out all evidences of his guilt. He then went back to the house and awaited the arrival of Mr. Dearing, not ex pecting Miss Dolan was accompanying him. As soon as Mr. Dearing arrived in the car riage, he (Dearing) got out, and Probst told him something was wrong with one of the cows, and asked him to go over to the barn with him. Deuring went along with him, and Miss Dolan went into the house, up stairs, and took off her bonnet and fun. Mr. Dearing did not even take oil' his gloves before going to the barn, but pro ceeded there at once, followed by Probst, had tho axe concealed ready for use. As soon as Mr. Dearing entered the barn door, Probtt stales that he struck him in the head, and felled him to the earth, and then chnppeJ at hi neck with the edge of the axe. Miss Dolau was the neU aud last victim. She proceeded to the burn after coming dowu stairs, not finding any one of the family ij) the house, and Probst, who was iu waiting, treated her as ho had done the rest of the family. After laying out the bodies und covering tlie in up. with hay, the murderer went into the house aud commenced searching for val uables, but he states he got no money, but expected to secure a considerable amount. lie stales that Miss Dolun's pocket book had very littlo in ft, and he said nothing whatever of the two $30 compound interest notes, and the bill of the same charac ter. He remained about the house for some time, picked up the articles found in the black valise, and left about dark. His lor ther movement pretty much as brought out on the trial, and which are pateot to the minds of the whole community. Probst states that he would have confess ed to all the murders before, but he ft-ared if he did so he would be torn to pieces by the mob. During tho trial, and even at the tune of his capture he states that ho had a dispo sition to make a confession,' but the yells of the crowd when he first saw them frighten ed him into the belief that if they knew the extent of his criir.e all the police in Phila delphia could cot save him from their clutch es Probst also states that he did not like to go to the court room during tho trial, u the yells ef the crowd when he made his ap pearauce on tbe street made a deep and ter rible impression on him, nnd he much pre ferred the solitude of his cell. During the afternoon he will be visited by some of the authorities, and it is -viper-ted that a minute confession in detail will be extracted from him. He knows that he will never again be brought face to face with any number of his fellow crcatnres, until the day of his execution, and therefore will give to tlie au thorities all the information they desire lu relation to the murder. . Although no one had doubted, lor a long lime, that he was solitary and alone iu his devilish work, it is a tource of inliuite satis faction to know, from his own lips, that he had no accomplice.
