H. nntatn.it. ulioiild be our duty !' If IU Dull ... I , , . .1.1 to endeavor to plant our potatoes at. that tim. I have, however, generally mviuv.. my time of planting into three periods ; the first, as early in tho sprinjr as it will do, sometimes by the first of April, and some times later, according as tho spring is for ward or backward. At this yliutinp, I put in nhmit nnn.fmirth of the natch. The next or middle planting, is dono about tho 2Mh of April, at which time I put in ono-hair of the whole patch ; ond the lu3t planting ia dor.e from the fifth to the tenth of May, when 1 put in the remaining one-fourth. It some times happens that the first or the lust planting turns out the best; in ca?o this happens, I am sure of a part of my crop being good. IJut as the middle planting is generally better than tho others, I plant double tne quantity at that time. My rea sons for making threo divisions in the crop are obvioos, and I think the best that can bo adopted. As I havfi now stated my time of planting, with my reason for so doing, I will proceed to give you tho best manner of planting', &c. A clover sod Is superior to any other kind I have ever tried ; and to obtain tins, it is best to sew clover with oats, and leave it lav over until the noxt SDrinc. instead of nlowinir nD the oats stubblo and sowing with wheal. The portion of this stubble intended for potatoes, should bo enclosed with a tempo rary fence, and the remaining part may be pastnred. Give tho clover sod a good coat of manure, or apply four hundred pounds of guano per acre, (the manure is preiciabie.)- If manure is used, it should bo raked in on the potatoes, after they are dropped ; if gun na it may be sprinkled in the furrow, and it both inntnnces nlowed nnder to the dctuh o four inches. Tho potatoes should be planted in every second furrow. After the potatoes are planted, a good rolling will bo of ndvan tage. as it will level the gronud, aud fill U the small hollows. When tho potatoes are just cominer through. tho ground should bo thoroughly loosened up by using tho square harrow on it. As soon as the potatoes are large enongh, not to be covered np, the cultivator should be used, by taking out the two back teeth, and running twice on a row. Continue this every few days, until the vines begin to fall. The plow in of no advantage, as it throws the dirt to the potatoes, aud leaves a furrow between the rows, so that when it rains, tho water runs in ton furrows, and is thus keeps from the roots or the potato. ll this plan oe loiioweci, it is linrdiv possi. ble to fail having a fair crop, gomo plant pnmpkins with their potatoes, and raise a considerable quantity of them ; but probably it tends to araw we virtue oi tno soil from the potato, "" Another very essential point in the raisins of potatoes, successfully, is that of changing the Seed everv five or six vetirs. . Thov. Ii1,-i tilmost everything else, folf ow tho course of nature, and degenerate when planted in the same sou for any considerable length of t:me, In proof of this, I will pive one instance only. A neighbor about ten years ago, was tortunate enough to secure a smooth kind of Mercers, which when first planted Welded very well, so much so, that all the neighbors bought of him aud planted. Where they bave bought within two or three years, they (.till raise fine crops, fully cqnal to when first introduced j while for the last two or three years, be has net had more than half a crop therefore, thev want changing. I have already lengthened out this much boyond my intentions when commencing, and will therefore close. Cor. Gr. Telegraph. SUCCESSFUL GRAPE CtXTl'RE. Having receivod several inquiring letters iu relation to Mr. McKay g method of cnitiva ting tho grape, I have concluded to answer all through your columns. I should have done it ere this, had I received tho following information trom Mr. a,. A. iU.ch.aT, ofNa. pies, Ontario county sooner. In an article headed "A profitable acre in western ew iork, published in your col uinnsUst fall, there is a great mistake res pecting the quantity produced. Instead of ten tons, the actual yield was alittlo over II 000 lbs of grapes on an acre. But this niu still be considered a great yield, and a very profitable one. Air. McKay says that the amount over 10 cents per ib, which be recei ved for bis grapes, will pay all the expenses ot cultivation, gutnenog. and getting to mar ket. This would leave 31,100 clear profit. Said acre was planted in the spring of 1848, one half with vines one rear old, and the remainder with those aged two years . 160 vines to the acre, or a rod rod spa'rt each way. Mr. McKay thinks on a middling steep side hill. 12 feet each way would not be too nar. His vines are trained in ell cases so as to give them the greatest amount of stmUune. For planting, pits were dug from to 3 feet deep and 6 to 8 feet in diameter. At the bottom of tho pit he placed, "ten heavy loach of refuse from the currier's shop, and cightv dead oxen," a drove of which had been driv. n into Naples at tho commencement of win ter, and a larjre portion of tlcm having died during the winter and spring. Mr. McKay idsn uses well rotted barn-yard manure, aval's dl frecli and unforuicnted manures. His vines now measure on on average over I" inches in circumtVionco around the bod v. nor ia there any essential diftoreneo in eizu be. tweeu the parts of the vineyard planted with oue or two rout old vines.
