'AMEUCANTAN1) SUNBU11Y SHAMOKIN JOURNAL POETRY.: From Uie ffcmrday Evening I'm.- Kailroada and Carala. ? roKTRT no Firnorr. . . Memetrra Eriiiom i it i mme limit eighty year ago that Darwin wrote : "Soon utiall Ihy power, tin-conquered Steam ! Draff the twilt batge and drive the rnpul . car." . : Joel Barlow wrote his epio poem of the "Vision of Columbus" seventy years ago In the Paris eJition, Hook IX. from rage 258 to 263, he portrays "The future piogreen of society with respect to commerce, discov eries, and the opening of canals." From it 1 make the following extracts. The Erie, Ohio Bnd Illinois canals are foretold : "Now round the Yielding canopy of shade, Again the Guide his heav'nly power dis play'd. Far as the angelic Power could lift the eye, Or earth or ocean bend the yielding sky. Around the chief in fair expansion rise, And earth's w hole circuit bounds the ievel'd skies The Hero look'd : beneath his wond'ring eyes Bright streams lengthen round the sens and sk ies ; The countless nations open all thpir stores, The sails, in mingling mnzes sweep the air. And commerce triumphs o'er the rage ol war." "In distant elory, where the watery way Spreads the blue borders of Jescending day, unlolilinif Macs !rom every current sweep, Pride of the woild and daughters of the deep. From arctic heav'ns, and deep in southern skies. Where frost recedes as blooms of culture rise Where eastern Amur's length'ning current elides, Where California breaks the billowy tides Peruvian streams their golden margins boast And spreading Chili leads the channel'd coast, The pinions swell ; till all the cloud-like train. From pole to pole, o'ershades the whitening mam. He saw, as widely spread the unchannelled plain, Where inland realms for ages bloomed in vain, Canals long winding, ope a weary fliah', Ans distant streams, and seas, and lakes unite, Where Darieu's hills o'erlook the gulphy tide, By human art the ridgy banks divide ; Ascending sails the opening pass pursue, And waft the sparkling treasures of Peru. Janeiro's stream from Plata winds its way, Madeira greets the waves of Par.icuay, From rich Albania, lower'd the falling sun, Back thro' the midland numerous channels run, Meet the far lakes, their beaulaous town that lave, And Hudson join to broad Ohio's wave. From dim Superioi, whose unfathomed sea Drinks the mild sunbeams of the setting Jy( New paths unfolding, lead their watery pride, And town and empires rise along their side ; To Misssippi's source the passes bend, And to the broad Pacific main extend." The prediction of Darwin relative to rail ways is not more singular than the descrip tion by Barlow of the Erie, Ohio, the Wa bash, and Illinois canals. Barlow's Poem written, he states, page 256, "previous to the late war," (meaning the Revolution,) is a remarkable product ion . lie has certainly the right with General Washington and Gen eral Schnylur, to claim the paternity of the Erie canal. Fulton, you may recollect, adopted Dar win's idea in the "Lady Clinton Barge," at tached to his first experiments in steam on the North River. But 1 am admonished not to trespass further on the value of your col umns, further than to mention that Col. J. Stevens, of Hobnken, said, in 1811 : "I should not be surprised at seeing steam car riages propeller at the rate of forty and fifty miles per hour, and 1 can see nothing to hin der one from moving on these ways with the velocity of one hundred miles an hour.
