If all were new their value would probably be SSOjOOO. . In Lancaster county is the greatest nickel mine in the world, and the onby one that Ins vet been discovered in the United States. The mine lies upon the dividing rid"C between Chester county and valley. Besides nickel, iron ana copper urc have been found. The copper has been Inmvn there for seventy years. The nickel ore is of a srray color and so hard that it can be obtained only by blasting. After it is thrown into a furnace and subjected to a strong heat. It is then smelted like iron. fter boinir placed between two heavy iron rollers and pulverized it is sent to Camden, N. JM where the copper is separated from the nickel. It is next protected lrom tor ??gn nickel by a forty per cent. dutj The average price of pure nickel is about $2 00 a pound. In the Lancaster mine 400 or 50(1 tons are obtained monthly, and about viie hundred and fifty men are employed One ot the most thriving towns in -New Jersey is l'atcvsou. It is well known for its silk manufactories. It has had a mar vellous growth in the past few years, rising from T.bOO in IS 10 to 10,1500 in 18G0, and doubling in the next decade. The panic ot 1873 was a great disturbance, and even to lav it feels the blow in every fibre of its life. The silk interest is. however, vcrv thriving, and the best qualities of Ameri can silk are manufactured there. One dif ficulty after another has been overcome until the Patcrson silks successfully chal lenge in lustre, finish, flexibility, substan tiality and color those of the most cele brated looms of the Old World. Six or seven thousand persons work in the silk mills, and the product finds a ready sale. This important industry could have had no existence under any other politice-econo-mic policy than that of protection, dem ocratic free-traders might profitably make a note of this. Counting the Funds. Shortly aft;-r the ll of July the-veteran X'nitcd States Treasurer, General Spinner will retire from office and be succeeded by Mr. New. This change will necessitate the counting of the money in the treasury, a work of no s-nmll magnitude. Iu order to make the task lighter the treasurer has requested National bank officers not to forward currency for redemption that will reach the treasury between the '2xh inst. and the 1st of July. The amount of money to be counted is about forty millions, of which two millions is in coin. The balance of the gold is in the subtrcasury at Xew York for which the new treasurer will not receipt to General Spinner. The money ia the United States treasury has not been actually counted fur many years, and dur ing that time it has frequently been charged that there was from ten millions to lifteen millions of dollars less cash on bund than is calbd fr by the books of the treasurer. The almost unlimited conlidenee of the c iimtry in the watchfulness and integrity General Spinner "the old watchdog of the treasury," as he is familiarly known has caused these charges to fall almost unheeded. Uut it will nevertheless be a satisfaction to the people to learn by an actual count that the amount of money claimed by the treasurer's books to be in the nation's vaults Is actully there to the last dollar. That such will prove to be the case wc firmly believe but if there is money missing the fact cannot be discovered too soon. The counting, it is said, will be done under the supervision of persons not connected with the treasury department, and will require about ten days. Special jSTotice.
