.TTTsfoiia. .-,-cLv?r. name: The One Friend. The following will be new to our read era. We tet the facts from a source which we know to he trustworthy. I'rtfiideot Lincoln, on one of his car 1) ruoruinjj walk?, while McCLELLAN, with the Army of the Potomac, was on the Chickaho'uioy, dropped in at the War Office, and found the Secretary, as uual, up to his ears in business. Tele grams were thick upon his desk, and ioi portaot reports from Fubordinates were at each elbow. The Presideut nodded kind ly and eat down. As it chanced, Mr. LIucoln had seated iiiwelf by a email table upon which was m pile of papers held together by a spring clasp. lie hal seen too many papers oi that description not to know what they were. They were petitions for office some as long; as a ''Corn law" petition, and signed l.y the whole voting force of a district, others with not more than one or two hundred names, while others had come with fewer, and with still fewer signers. Some were signed by Governors, ex (Jovernors, and Members of Congress, and others had only recommendations of mili tary heroes of fame and renown. The office asked for was a valuable one. The former incumbent had been trans lerred to an important post in the West by Geo. Ilalleck, and a special detail by the Secretary had fince been doing the duties appeartaiuing to the vacant office. Mr. Lincoln took the applications from their clasp, and looked them over. His fce lengthened, and his lips tightened, as his c-ize became lost in the wilderness if names opened before him. Stanton," said he, "what are you go ing to do about this 1 Hare you selected your man for the place V "Selected !" cried the Secretary, push iun away a lot of papers from before him, aud facing about. ''Flow is a man going to select ? Look at the list of applicants. :iuJ look st the hosts of sponsors. Just itt thi moment I don't want to offend any body ueedlessly. I am obliged to offend croucJi any way." ''Here's a man royally recommended," and Mr. Lincoln, holding up an applica linn of great length, and bearing the signatures of men mighty in the political arena. "This man ought to be worthy." "Look further, Mr. President, and you will lind that petition thrown in the shade t-utirely." "Mercy !" exclaimed the President He hnd taken hold of a petition which utifoldcd itself to the floor. "Go on, go ou, you'll find more of the same sort," paid the Secretary. The President overhauled the heap, and near the bottom he came across a pimple petition, bearing only the signa ture of the applicant. "Poor feliow ! Here must be a man without friends. Nut one to speak a word in his favor. And how simply he fcfcs for the situation as though it were the office of pedagogue in a frontier school. Do you know the man V The Secretary took the petition and looked at it. "Ves he said. "He brought the peti tion with his own hand. He was intro !u:-ed to you last evening, at Seward's." remember," said Mr. Lincoln, with h I rihtening look. "The plainly dressed, quirt vouth, who bad his mother with him ?'"' Yes." Say, Stanton, do you think him fit for the. j lace r" "I do, certainly." ' Then, as he seems so entirely friend V? among the multitude who have friends without numbor, I will be his friend, lie hhall hare are at !east." And President Lincoln took a pen and placed his strong autograph upon the margin of the young man's petition. We need hardly sddd that the young man thus befriended received the ap p.iiotment. We may add, however, that hi! proved himself a most worthy recipient of the good President's favor. The Sweetness cf Home. He that lia no borne has not the sweet e-t pleasure of life ; he feels not the thou fand endearments that cluster around that hallowed spot to fill the void of his ach ing heart, and while away his leisure mo ments in the sweetest of life's joys. Is niiftrtuno your lot? You will find a friendly welcome from hearts beating time to your own. The chosen partner of your toil has a smile of approbation when others have deserted, a hand of hope when all others refuse, a heart to feel your sorrows as if they were her own. Perhaps a smiling cherub, with prattling glee and joyous laugh, will drive sorrow lrom your careworn brow, and enclose it in the wreath of domestic bliss. No mat ter how humble that home may be, how destitute its stores, or how poorly its in mates are clad, if true hearts dwell there it is yet a home. A cheerful, prudent wife, obedient and affectionate children, will give their possessors soore real joy than bags of gold and worldly honors. The home of a temperate, industrious and honest man will be his greatest joy. He comes to it weary and worn, but the music of the merry laugh and the happy voices 4 the children cheer. A plain but a healthy meal awaits him". Envy, ambi tion and strife have no place there, and with a clear conscience he lays a weary limbs down to rest in the bosom of his family and under the protecting care of the poor man's friend.
